Its default mode is twangy sentimentality, cued by the plaintive songs on the soundtrack (one of them written in part by the actress Rashida Jones, a producer of the film).

But the scenes of a group of teenage and 20-something women sharing a featureless suburban house in Florida, watched over by an apparently amiable, eerily blank young talent agent who is a combination of concierge and pimp, are authentic and effective — banal, sad, funny and weird. The camera lingers on bare floors dotted with open suitcases and spindly bedside tables holding jar candles and boxes of Walgreens feminine douches, trying to enforce a sense of anomie and innocence lost, but the filmmakers didn’t have to bother. The pathos is right on the surface, as the women stroke their tiny dogs and discuss money, independence and the absolute necessity of escaping their parents.

“Hot Girls Wanted” traces a narrative path from eager expectation to jaded cynicism — it’s the old Hollywood starlet story — as we learn that most of the women experience a compressed career of a few months in the “amateur” pornography field before being pushed aside by new arrivals. The scarier, even more callous side of the business appears in due course as the women sign on for niche videos to keep the checks coming in. It is, however, made clear that the work is still performance, distasteful and upsetting as it might be for the female performers.

There’s an interesting story about class and the American economy in “Hot Girls Wanted,” even if it’s not the story the filmmakers want to focus on: how the women who answer “must be 18” Craigslist ads say they prefer what they’re doing, at least at first, to the dead-end jobs available in their hometowns. As Rachel, an 18-year-old from Oswego, Ill., says in her Miami living room after a shoot: “Are you kidding me? I made $900 in five hours. I’m going to go home and make $8.25 an hour? No. No no no no.”

Are any of you guys familiar with the low-budget/indy porn business model?

If she's getting $900, i'm guessing the total production costs are probably around $1500-2000, so where do these guys go to sell this movie? How much money do they expect to make off it? What are the distribution venues?

Don't forget she might have done two or three scenes. So that brings down the per scene cost. Hate to be so cruel but if I was running that business I would definitely try get a few scenes done on one day. Maybe different locations around the house. Etc.

I read a review of the documentary.
It said that big co's pretend to be indie ones in recruiting these women

Who wants to bet that at more than one point, the doc will tell the tale of some cry-me-a-river ex-pornstar who "had no idea" of the destructive and damaging things the industry would do to her life.

Directed by two women, Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, who are from ABC News and whose previous effort was the 2012 documentary "Sexy Baby." Here is a description of that movie:

"An ex adult film star, a 12 year old girl and a 22 year old who yearns for "normal" private parts are chronicled in this thought provoking doc about how porn, social media and pop culture affect women and girls."

Both of these films seem to me like expanded episodes of "20/20," with their breathless descriptions of how women are being victims, ignoring much larger issues that we discuss here. I've grown weary of how the media picks a subject and stokes up hysteria.

I'll pass on what these two are saying about porn in their new film, thanks. I'm sure the moral will be that it hits women the hardest.

I saw this on Netflix about a month ago.

Although the title is latent with expectation, I wouldn't advise seeing it. It's boring and depressing. Just a lot of hand-cam shots of dorks sitting on the couch, talking trash, or stumbling around their filthy apartments.

I found it neither interesting, titillating, or informative.

These people are worthless bums, for the most part.

I cried laughing at the beta chump dating the porn star. In one scene she talks about to work and doing a bondage scene. Another scene he is with her at some college type party and some frat bro starts making jokes about it, the look on the chumps face was priceless.

Agreed. I tried watching this the other week, it was very uninteresting, the girls were all beat.

One thing I did like was how that ugly looking chump started that business from scratch after being a so-called loser his entire life. I'm not sure if he's banging any of his girls, I would hope so, I didn't get that far into it and didn't pay much attention to most of what I did watch.

It was a good documentary. I found it interesting and it showed a lot of the uncomfortable truths we preach here.

I finally watched this last night.

I guess it tried to make you feel sorry for these scumbags, but I didn't feel one twinge.

They kept following this one chick (the one with the beta chump bf) back home to Texas.

Her home life seemed fine. The Mom cared about her, the dad looked like a hardworking guy also cared about her. She just wanted to go fuck for $$$. Found out she wasn't making that much and left.

No men or patriarchy made her do anything she didn't want to do. In fact, the men in life wanted her to quit. She couldn't even tell her father what she was doing.

The sluts complain about some rough scenes, but still no one MAKES them do anything.

And for being 18 to 20 years old these chicks were haggard and run through looking. A 24 year old (the milf) was nearing the wall.

The fact is, a bored frumpy girl living in some boring ass rural town in Texas would be attracted to some sort of excitement. Getting paid for it is an excuse. I think the real reason is that she just wants to get away from the life she was born into. Her story is nothing particularly interesting.

There's nothing particularly enlightening about that documentary. It just shows how sad and boring people's lives may be in rural parts of the country (any country). They could either become the town slut (and have their reputation stained that way) or just have it stained in front of everyone who bothers to watch ugly girls getting fucked.

OK, I dug up the article that had put me in a bad mood when it came to this documentary (see my comments above).

It was an interview with the producer, Rashida Jones, in the women's magazine Marie Clare (link here). The gist is that these girls get into porn for "the glamor" -- an exact quote -- and don't understand what they're really getting into.

Here is what they used for a pullout quote: "Women are forced into blow jobs, they're being forced to vomit, and they're crying."

This is ridiculous. Getting into porn takes some effort; it's not like going to 7-Eleven. How can any woman go through all the trouble of doing this and claiming they "didn't know" what it would be about?

What I see in this film is part of an orchestrated effort to absolve all these women of the "sin" of getting into porn, by claiming they were "tricked" into it. They tried this in the '80s too, claiming no woman would voluntarily do certain acts.

(Aside: Ironically, what I found in real life is not only are women into violent sex, but if you're not, they'll dump you for a guy who is. Raise your hand if you got broken up with because you were "too nice" and didn't pull a girl's hair and the like. My hand is up.)

All of this reminds of what's going on at college campuses, where there is a effort to make everyone else but women responsible for their decisions. And once again, I'll state: If women are so infantile that they can't tell porn is a bad career choice or that getting shit-faced on campus will lead to trouble, that fine. Just don't tell us they should be our leaders or our bosses, though.

What is funny about the porn business is how unglamorous it is in real life. It is really just another form of sex work, similar to stripping and hooking. Especially now that you can't really make big money in porn anymore.

- Take it even further by printing off business cards with fake names and a fake production company (with a fake website) if you have the cash. Hell even draft waivers.
- Put out a casting call seeking 'beautiful young women (of your preferred race/height/body type) for a small part in Indie film that's going to be aired during the next festival season' (don't name specific names or festivals - IE Sundance, Darren Aronofsky - good way to get sued).
- Meet them, film them, bang them.

Fake casting call game. I the only one that sees this? How many young girls these days are gullible, averse to doing background research, want to make it in Hollywood and 'want to do porn just once'? Tens of thousands.

I know three guys (two doctors and a lawyer) pulling this shit off right now. They have a nice condo in a highrise here in Miami, the doctors do the STD screens themselves. They tell the girls they can never have done porn before , must be 18-22 and have state IDs. They fly them in put them up at a local hotel and have camera equipment, professional lighting, and full make up shower robes, sex toys and everything set up. They have a bullshit website that looks like a very expensive members only boutique operation with no real access or members. They get girls so eager sometimes they actually pull the "flyout to tryout" and only pay for the girls flight. They have been doing this for 5 years without a hitch. I only about know these guys because one of them went to law school with me. When he told me the scam I was amazed I did not think of it.
