OK you have a lot of time in front of you that's nice . Yes we have too much taxes . It seems often really bad but it's pretty even with the lower cost of life when I compare with Ontario . I live in Gatineau and I know many people who thought they would save a lot of money livin on the ontario side. They have all return in quebec for the reason above .

You'll do well in Quebec and in Montreal, but not all Quebecers are always nice to people from France. I made friends with 3 young people from France when I lived in Sherbrooke (2 guys and 1 girl on some kind of "stage" or professional exchange through thier school), we went out drinking a few times and I recall some of the local guys being rude to them. These French guys were nice and easy going, small guys who weren't intimidating at all, the Quebecois guys were basically calling them pussies and fags "fifs or fiffy" (I think thats how they say it there, Alfonzo?) they were even razzing up the chick that was with us.

So ya, Quebecois guys aren't like French men from France (who are a bit more effeminate and less aggressive than your typical NA dude IMHO), they are the hockey playing lumberjack types, they love UFC (this is where GSP hails from) and they will fight you if you fuck around with them, but generally they're cool, those guys at the bar were just a bunch of drunk arseholes!

Yes, well Assholes are everywhere . The thing about the french that Quebecois don't like sometime or the steriotype is they are ''condescendant'' .
I think it's more a reality with the Parisian but, in general Quebecois are very friendly and love humour .I have family in France and haven't had any problems. We joke all the time here . It's the better approch in my opinion . If you smile, you are open ,funny, guys will accept you right away like if you were closed friend and they will present you all the people they know men/women . Competition like I said is if you see someone with a buch of women go talk to him,joke with him . Last week I went to a strip club with some friends . A buch of stripers came at our table and a friend of mine started to looke like a retard . He put all the gestured he knows of a typical retard and start to talk to them with his tongue outside of his mouth dribble(I'M not sure about this word) all the time he talked to them . Anyways He was very stupid and we all started to be a gang of retard and they have stayed at our table paying for us all night and we haven't pay one cent to them .

Very interesting input..i am tended to say that this,is the boomerang effect of us being arrogant to them when they come to france.It is true that we think that they have the worst french accent of all french speaking places in the world but we still like them for who they are and what they stand for.They take it to seriously!!
I met a Quebecoise 2 years ago in london and played the all nagging talk (about her accent )in a very smooth way but she didn't buy that.She called me a: maudit francais!!!in a joking way but i knew that inside she meant it .We still ended up making out in mayfair. Hey l'etalon noir, no man I don't work in Montreal but am seriously considering moving there in the future, I'm very comfortable there and as has been discussed in another forum about one's living environment, Montreal is where I would flourish and be happier, on verra!

Quebecois French definitely takes some getting used to but its not all that bad, I love their stupid swear words, they all have something to do with the Catholic church! Basically, the worst thing you can say in Quebec is "tabernak" (it would certainly raise eyebrows if you said it in public), which is the tabernacle in church. Other Quebec swear words include: calice(chalice), ciboire (ciborium), viarge (virgin mary), crisse (christ)....its quite interesting, they're all curse words!

Also, I found out the hard way how French in France is different than Quebecois French (I became fluent while studying in France), when I first went to Montreal in the summer of 2001, I asked this chick "so, do you have balls (testicles)?" LOL, the word GOSSE in France means kids but in Quebec it is slang for balls!

Ya, the stereotypical idea of French guys here in NA is that most are beret wearing, wine drinking, cheese eating surrender monkeys, but I wouldn't want to walk the mean streets of Seine ST Denis or Ivry sur Seine alone at night, ROUGH hoods there! Just check out the scenery while you take the RER train from de Gualle airport to the city centre in Paris.

I think that you will do well in Quebec, just act yourself, be French! There are MANY French expats living all over the province but especially Montreal, I'd say play up the arrogant French man part, call them lumberjacks (bucherons) and maple syrup drinkers, of course tell them they can't speak French, etc. Quebecois have a good sense of humour (this is where the Just Pour Rire/Just for Laughs festival takes place, after all).

The ROC (Rest of Canada) is alright, I would recommend a trip to British Colombia to see the west coast, different but really cool vibe out there! Ontario, Calgary, east coast, etc. MEH, they're alright, but Montreal is hands down, THE BEST in all of Canada, go there, you'll like it!

I can't dress most of european clothes in general, specially pants . For the mocking of the accent , I don't think it's a good idea . I almost didn't want to hype the place either, because it's still a hidden a gem in that so many Americans sleep on it. It's crazy. But it's only right I drop knowledge on a place that changed my life in 2011. I also deeply regretted not having visited sooner. I wondered how my life might have been different, but better late than never. I will also be returning during the summer of 2012.

G, check out this website: Kijiji , its the most popular in Canada for rentals. I recommend airbnb as well, I found a mint spot in Kingston, Ja on there.

I'd say one of the most sought after places to live in Montreal is the Plateau Mont Royal area, its hip, trendy and has lots of cool cafes, bars, restos, etc.

I lived in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace (NDG) area, both in Cote-des-neiges and Snowdon areas, its more working class but still has its charm.

Theres many options in Montreal and rentals can be VERY CHEAP in relation to other North American cities. Also, when you're looking for place, they don't always describe them as "2 bedroom", that would be listed as a 4 1/2, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bathroom. I think thats how it works anyway, maybe someone else can explain it.

I haven't lived there in 11 years and its been a few since I spent any significant amount of time, so areas may have changed a bit, but one thing is for sure: Montreal is still an awesome city to spend the summer!!!

Airbnb is my shit. Most of the listings are for entire apartments, which owners, tenants, etc rent out to you for a certain period of time. I've used it in Barcelona and Montreal and it's worked out real well. Can't lose man. The best mindblowing DHV pads are on this site.

I've seen some in Montreal that are true bachelor pads (even with a bench press and canopy in the crib). Just play around with it and refine your search according to amenities and location.

As for neighborhoods, here is a quick breakdown of pros vs. cons:

Old Port:

Pros-I think this area is your speed since you like to do it custom suited up. This is a historic part of town with trendy bars, restaurants and lounges for those who like to make their presence felt. Santos, Velvet Speakeasy, and La Confessional are your kind of spots. That is a big plus to having a pad right here. This is for the twenty-something scene (post-college).

Cons-It's not far from the rest of the city, but Old Port is it's own enclave. You would have to drive or cab it to a part of the city like St. Laurent. You could take metro as well, but if time is the essence, I wouldn't recommend it. The younger girls (college set) are in other parts of the city.

Mont Royal

Pros-Some great bars like Bily Kun and shopping areas for day game. Good restaurant scene as well. Short cab or metro to St-Laurent (epic nightlife street).

Cons-No real significant dance clubs here, and the younger set is in St-Laurent.

Downtown

Pros-You've got good clubs like Cavali, the best strip clubs, cool pubs like Peel Pub, and you're in a central location to get to Crescent and St. Laurent. Near the major universities. Near the express bus to the airport and near major hotels.

Cons- Can't say there's really a con to being downtown as far as location, because of convenience, but most of the fun things to do are elsewhere. It also lacks the iconic feel of a neighborhood because it's a transit point.

Saint-Laurent

Pros - On the street with the best nightlife in Montreal. Loads of bars and clubs and lots of young chicks.

Cons - Can't say there's really one other than lacking great restaurants.

Westmount

Pros - Near Crescent street and near downtown and McGill Univ. Good local scene.

Cons - More residential and local.

Honestly, I'd recommend switching through different hoods if you plan to be there for weeks. Montreal is a fundamentally divided city. You've got mad multicultural areas, working class, English-speaking, Francophone, etc. Renting out spots for shorter periods of time (weekend to a week) will also open up much more pads. Some owners and tenants either don't feel comfortable or are simply limited in the amount of time they can have you in their spot.

I think Mont Royal is probably the most neutral hood. But I'd recommend running a rotation between that, Old Port, St. Laurent, and Downtown/Westmount (for Crescent St.).

Little Italy and Mile End, as well as some of the working class areas Scotian mentioned are also decent residential hoods that have their charm and offer you the opportunity to interact with just locals (mainly day game settings).

It's wild how thorough MTL is and how I've slept on it for so long.

As for the other sites you mentioned, I've heard of them, but I think airbnb is superior. It's more popular, trendy, and has ideal pads for an international player. I also happen to know the founder (Brian) personally (his girlfriend works in sales with one of my best friends); he's given me some discounts in the past and he's in his 20s. I respect that kind of hustle and the website is aesthetically representative of my generation.

Can't lose. But if I had to choose one hood to stay in MTL, Mt. Royal.

You're sharp. I did change it because I saw your caveat to that question where you asked where most girls would eventually roll through and thought about it for a sec. Though Old Port is my favorite hood in terms of spots, Mt. Royal might see more traffic during the day, and its metro stop is a major transit hub. People going from up north (Mile End, Little Italy) over to downtown and St. Laurent, and vice versa, will have to hit Mt. Royal. In terms of people traffic on the street (girls rolling through), it's probably your best bet, especially St. Laurent street which eventually hits that endless strip of bars and clubs.

Ultimately, you are better off rotating hoods to get a different take on the city. Kinda like how NYC has mad neighborhoods that give you a whole unique view on life in the city. Living in the Village is going to be much different from living in the Heights or LES, etc. I'm not saying this is NYC, but MTL is thorough. One can easily suffer from FOMA (fear of missing out) syndrome. There could 3 or 4 different areas going off at the same time. Logistics and timing is crucial.

Also, if you like MMA or boxing and need a workout, MTL is the hometown of GSP; he trains at one of the more famous gyms there.

You're sharp. I did change it because I saw your caveat to that question where you asked where most girls would eventually roll through and thought about it for a sec. Though Old Port is my favorite hood in terms of spots, Mt. Royal might see more traffic during the day, and its metro stop is a major transit hub. People going from up north (Mile End, Little Italy) over to downtown and St. Laurent, and vice versa, will have to hit Mt. Royal. In terms of people traffic on the street (girls rolling through), it's probably your best bet, especially St. Laurent street which eventually hits that endless strip of bars and clubs.

Ultimately, you are better off rotating hoods to get a different take on the city. Kinda like how NYC has mad neighborhoods that give you a whole unique view on life in the city. Living in the Village is going to be much different from living in the Heights or LES, etc. I'm not saying this is NYC, but MTL is thorough. One can easily suffer from FOMA (fear of missing out) syndrome. There could 3 or 4 different areas going off at the same time. Logistics and timing is crucial.

Also, if you like MMA or boxing and need a workout, MTL is the hometown of GSP; he trains at one of the more famous gyms there.

Yeah, Montreal has a rich and I mean rich Boxing culture. That is the icing on the cake for me.

In all the district you named the best one is the plateau Mont-royale . It's near everything , It have his own vibe . Old port and Westmount are 2 of the richest area in town . You'll pay more for your appartement and you will pay more for your transport than if you were on the Plateau .

To answer Etalon noir , The anglophone community live in the west island and you seen many tourist speak english in downtown like every big city . A lot of people are billingual and immigrant trilingue . French it's the main language . You should'n have any difficulty to make a friend circle if you act like I said in the previous post .
