I'm liking the information posted so far.

I notice that these suits seem to be casual suits or almost leisure suits. Are tuxedos considered tryhard?

I had a sudden spawn of random inspiration when I didn't have suit pants.

I went to a themed. (Rich and beautiful)

Wore a pair or white cotton dress pants. A grey suit shirt with black jacket and red tie.
I threw the outfit together in 5 minutes considering I didn't there was a party happening.

Seems like it was a hit and I stood out mainly for having the white pants.

Has anyone experimented with tossing in odd styles or different colors as appose to all the same

I can't even find a picture of anyone doing this.
Instead of black pants white jacket..i did white pants black jacket

I've done white pants with black jacket. I think it looks badass.

I'm getting ready to buy a custom suit. Probably going to get my measurements done and have them make it in Korea for cheap.

I bought a nice jacket andd pants and had them tailored a little before I left for europe.
To dumb to understand the important of getting a custom suit or getting a good one tailored for me and i didn't wanna spring for the money.

I rock what I have and look better than most guys in the bars and clubs..but I don't plan on getting a suit here in germany.
Euro hasnt collapsed yet. When I go back to the states I'll spring the money for a suit

I want a CS, but I think going full CSD on a first suit is not the best idea - having no experience with one I may not know what I want... how much do you need to spend on a first suit including a couple alterations so it fits right and still looks good, will $300 get me rolling? Then after a while I can say "Ok, on my next suit I'd want this, this and this." Right now I'm guessing what I want, I think I know, but it's a guess, I don't want to dump CS dough into a guess.

I would travel for a tailor, the purpose of my trip would be for the suit. Take a week or two around the city and be there for the fittings. I want to select the fabric and discuss the suit with the tailor. This leads me to:
What tailors would you personally recommend. They can be anywhere in the world. Better yet if it's a family generational business, I want a story with the creation of my suit and for it's creators to have history.
How many fittings do you require for your suits? (is this any bearing on quality?).

Also... what are common red flags with tailors? Most crafts have a common give away for poor quality. Maybe a question or looking for a detail.

A Tailored Suit is made to measure. Suit supply isn't. They're not in the same class.

You're comparing a Porsche to a 3 Series. A Tailored Suit costs $1200-1500 per suit, while Suit Supply costs $400-700. And I'm not sure A Tailored Suit is Porsche quality either. Do you work for them?

There aren't many reviews on A Tailored Suit, and even if there were... Satisfaction with MTM off the internet is not terribly high, because it's fraught with problems. They don't measure you. When you have different people measuring, or one unskilled person measuring, you get imprecise measurements, and a less than optimal fit. They also don't make a pattern just for you, as they do in true bespoke. They fit a pre-existing pattern to your (imprecise) measurements.

I don't have experience with MTM, but those who do say that MTM is not custom 'enough' to be much improvement over a well-chosen off the rack suit. Unless you have very strange proportions, you're better off finding a line of off the rack suits that already fit you.

If I wanted to spend a grand or more on a suit, I'd look into getting an off the rack number from one of the Italian makers, or possibly a Hickey Freeman. Or buy a new suit off eBay. Maybe a custom number from Asia if I was already there.

This is misinformed. You can buy a SuitSupply suit and get it tailored for 20-120$. That would make it a tailored suit. In fact, if you pick the right off the rack size, and get it tailored correctly. The suit can fit better than a Made to Measure suit.

Also, Made to Measure suits can cost a variety of prices. If you are looking at the cheapest end of the spectrum, you can buy an Indochino suit online for about 300$. At the higher end of the spectrum you can get a hand stitched, fully canvassed Italian suit for about 1800-2800$.

Also, if you are looking for a suit that fits perfectly, you are talking about a bespoke suit. This is where you choose the fabrics (aka those fabrics are "spoken" for you). Then the tailor takes his initial measurements and begins constructing the suit jacket for you. This is a three or so month process where multiple measurements are taken at different points to acquire the best fit. Bespoke suits usually cost around 3500$ minimum, and can exceed 8500$ depending on who you go to. Saville Row in London is legendary for the quality of their bespoke suits. Otherwise, I have only heard of a couple places that actually do bespoke suits.

A respected men's style blog reviewed the suits I mentioned earlier, and confidently states they are the best suit you can buy at their price level, of about $500. Not to mention many of the patterns are interesting and suited for night game.

It's good to see someone else is in support of SuitSupply. I was doing some research on suits. For a couple months it was an obsession as I collected knowledge on suits. From what I discovered, for suits at the lower end of the spectrum in terms of cost, most of them were shit. Indochino is a great example of this. Bottom of the barrel "MTM", it rarely ever fits properly, and it is fresh out of a Chinese sweatshop, nice. I found that good suits started at a minimum of about 1800$, but when I looked further Suitsupply had suits with a level of fit, fabric and design that was close to the level of a 1500-1800$ suit, but at a third of the price.

I got a lot of this information from the styleforum. There's even a thread on SuitSupply. I know I am advertising this forum again, but I just really like it: http://www.styleforum.net/t/250682/suitsupply-nyc. Anyways, what I found is that, the best fit was the "London" fit. It was a fit that copied the classic style of fit that Englishmen would wear.
Here's a picture of the London fit:
Fairly low button stance compared to modern fits, and the jacket is a bit longer than a modern fit. Supposedly the Sienna cut is the closest thing to the London cut. The differences being: hacking pocket, ticket pocket, the button stance is a couple inches higher, and the jacket is a few inches shorter.

Either way, I am definitely looking forward to buying from SuitSupply. I am shedding some weight right now, and am looking to buy from the Fall/Winter collection (in hopes that some London cut suits show up on their site again).

What's the best way to get sweat odor out from a suit jacket? Is there an better way than getting it dry cleaned?
Reply

Buying a first suit

I would opt for the dry cleaning. For a single suit jacket it shouldn't break the piggy. I just dry cleaned two 3-piece suits and it set my back about 50 bones.

Thanks for the link. I'm just wondering if dropping $900 at Suitsupply or ~$1200 at Bluefly for an on-sale Prada or other designer is the better call.

Bump

Today my first custom suit came in. I've got a few suits I've bought from Men's Wearhouse, and I will never put them on again. I've got wide shoulders and a small waist, my legs are long but thick. I had a clothier recommended to me and he came over, took all my measurements, went over fabrics, linings, ties, the whole thing. He came over again with my suit today and I tried it on. Fucking awesome. It's grey with gold pinstripes, it's bold. I didn't take a lot of pics of it because a few adjustments have to be made but I feel like it's Christmas. I'm going to have this guy make as many of my clothes as I can. Also a shirt was made with it and a tie.

Edit; I've tried several times to attach a photo and when I post it, nothing shows up.

Does anyone else use a clothier to have their clothes made and advice on style? I'm thinking this may be the way to go for awhile.

I got two suits at SuitSupply recently. They have a store in DC. One stop shopping for all your well dressed need. They have a huge selection of fabrics and styles.

Cost me $1100 including alterations. The one thing I have yet to do is try on a high end brand like Canali, Prada, etc. and see if the fit is truly different/better.

I bought two in Bogota back in August for about $350 USD each, which I thought was a pretty good deal for custom tailored, 100% Chilean wool. I didn't really know what I was looking for so went with what the tailor called "classic" style, one black and one grey.

Now I"m in Bangkok and the deals here are even better at the Indian tailors, around $120-250, I'm going to do more research and maybe go with some different styles than the classic look. Probably won't be getting wool this time, something a lot lighter for the local climat here which is damn hot.

For hot weather get linen or seersucker.

Scotian - go to Rajawongse Clothier.

I've never been there, but they're supposedly THE go-to shop for the Bush family, members of the secret service, and high-ranking U.S. military & politicians. Their prices are still cheap as far as I know.

There's a lot of talk with them online. Been following them for quite some time, have communicated with the owner, and meaning to go next time I'm in Thailand. Once they have your measurements they can send you a suit anytime, and I think they make trips to the US for fittings occasionally.

I just busted out the cash for a Brioni. Dark navy with stripes. I currently have 3 shit-a-bank suits that hardly fit so it's a huge step up, but I can always return it after seeing what that caliber of suit is all about.

If the Brioni fits me like a glove, I'll keep it despite the price.

Is there any way to connect with them before reaching Thailand so that you can do some Research and when there they have things lined up for you for final selection/ shortlist?

There is a sale on a cheap suit at Macys today and since I've never worn 1 and would like to try it out without it costing me a fortune I am thinking of buying it. I went to the store to check them out today. Online they are selling for 109$ here are the 2

I really don't want to spend too much for the first suit since there is a chance I never wear it/hate them. What do you guys think about this one? Especially the brown one. Decent for a 1st timer?

They don't look the best to me but not hideous. Get them tailored properly and you should look mint. Certainly that's an attractive price for a first suit and some experimentation.

I've tried some KC suits on at Macys. The fit was awful. Indeed, I didn't find any suits in that store that I liked.

Here's what I do when I try on a (OTR) suit:
  1. Slip it on. Is it tight pulling my arm through the second sleeve? If not, this is bad.
  2. Button up. Pull my shoulders back. Is it too tight at the chest?
  3. Run my hand up the side of the jacket. Push the sleeve up until it hits my armpit. Does the shoulder pop up? If it does significantly (more than 1/2") this is bad.
  4. Pull my arms forward. Is there enough give in the fabric at the back?
Using these principles (and a lot of practice) I can tell if it's a bad suit immediately. I need to wear it for a week to tell if it's a good suit.

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

What do you guys think of this RL sportcoat? I was just browsing today and saw it at Belk for under 100$. They didn't have my size but I threw on a size lower and I loved how it fit me. The only problem is I don't know anything about this stuff and could always take it back if its a bad color or anything. What do you guys think?
