So are the people who don't have the internal monologue just doing something equivalent nonverbally with imagery or something? Or are they actually just zombies that react to stimuli without qualia?

There's a book called The Intelligence Paradox by evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa that is kind of about this: there are many evolutionarily maladaptive traits or behaviors that are for whatever reason linked to higher levels of intelligence. Ex. being a night owl as opposed to an early bird, being homosexual, being a scatterbrain/keeping a cluttered workspace, and a bunch of others I can't recall offhand. I'm not sure the author comes to this conclusion but the impression I got was that these genetic traits (which should ensure your genes are not passed on) have survived because they are linked to higher IQ, i.e. the bonus of higher IQ offsets the drawbacks of these traits.

This is a very important point.

People who have TOO MUCH inner monologues actually can find it much more difficult to make clear choices on many important matters, or constantly have doubts about whether they made the best decisions in life, because they take too much time considering all the many variables and possibilities of each scenario they are presented with. Shakepeare's character of "Hamlet" is an classic exaggerated example of such a person.

If you are the type of person who often takes very long to make decisions, constaly questions choices made in the past, and /or regularly has trouble falling asleep at night cause of the endless different thoughts and dialogues going through your head...then you probably have an inner monologue that is out of control, and needs to be reined in somehow, possibly through religion, or meditation, or simply some other form of more self discipline of your mind.


However, there are very smart and cunning people in the world who can operate very intelligently relying mostly on gut instincts alone without using too much logical/rational thinking. I'm not just talking about tribal people living in jungles now...but also many modern world big city dwellers. These types of people may have a very heightened sense of intuition and can "read other people", quickly understand various situations, and adapt to an array of different environments in a fast, natural and intuitive way, that may take others like us many years of experience (or training) to notice and perceive. These are people who can adapt more quickly to changing situations or rules quickly, and can survive more easily when situations turn dangerous. They also very often have few regrets in life, and are very confident in the choices they have made in the past.


Bottom line I see 3 kinds of people in the world:

1. People who have inner monologues which can be "low", "medium" or very over active.

2 People who are very smart but process the world mostly on gut instincts and intuition. (These people may have inner monologues, or may not have them at all. If they do have an inner monologue it certainly is not the dominant force controlling their behaviour, thinking and decision making)

3. People who have very little or no inner monologues, and also have very poor intuition and/or gut instincts. These people are either like wild animals...or much worse, a former wild animal that is now domesticated and has become so dependent on its masters, it cannot survive on its own anymore because all its original survival instincts are gone. It's survival depends on its submission and obedience to it master, even if it not fully aware it has a master subliminally controlling & manipulating it every day of its life.


I sometimes question whether those in category number 3 have a true human soul or not.
(It may be controversial to say such a thing...but back in olden days, the concept/idea of many humans existing without souls was actually quite common.)

To add to what Caduceus (VERY nice post by the way), I believe that those people who are very smart and can react to things very quickly lived a life that installed those traits. For example, a very charismatic person may be a military brat, forced to make friends in different places. Another example could be a good salesman who could predict which who would or would not buy his product. That person could have lived a childhood full of hustling to live.

Your brain is a muscle and like all muscles, it can be trained. I believe NPC are simply people who are content with living off instinct and riding the wave. I feel most kids growing up don't have the inner monologue but instead grow into having one. a Higher sense of consciousness

Now my Controversial opinion, I believe that weed has a STRONG impact on the NPC state. In my opinion, weed is like meditation for some it can calm down the inner monologue and cause people to be great thinkers and innovators. For other, however, I feel it dumbs them down and turns them into mindless followers.

Also, NPC tend to use more emotion than logic, so it has to be some sort of correlation.

First thing that comes to mind regarding the term "inner monologue" is either mental illness or the pretentious, vastly overused, Emperor's-new-clothes type bullshit of the stream of consciousness novel.

While everyone might or might not have an inner monologue sometimes and it's a good thing, I would frankly be ashamed of touting it. Being proud of the fact that you have an inner monologue is akin to being proud of breathing. What's next, feeling special because you have a slightly unusual handwriting? Please.

Actually I am the same - I verbalize mostly only by writing. I also talked in the past with men who were smarter than me - above 150+ and genius level (guys who memorize books via perfect memory etc.). Most said that writing is slow to them and verbalization is a process that would encompass too little.

However - I LOVE THE NPC MEME for other reasons.

The reason is less because the availability of inner dialogue or mental-frame-beyond-words thinking that some intelligent people manifest.

The reason is because it so fucking fits the fact that most people never breach the basic biological and elite-driven conditioning. They are essentially automatons:

It's crazy to think how quickly things have changed, not relative to our fairly meagre lifespans, but the lifespan of Earth.

Up until maybe 150 years ago.

Imagine you're a primordial ooze RVFer, born in 1870, you covertly pick off a few slim chicks on the downlow (the church...), you're red pill as fuck because those were the times and you're jacked because you eat well and work hard on the farm, but by 1889 you're married to a slim cutie. You're 19 and your wife is 16-18.

What do you do? You and her pop out kids.

A lot of kids.

Because when infant mortality was 70%, having ten kids means if five survive you're lucky.

This is just the West; this was China 45 years ago and many parts of Africa today.

And then World War One happens, and America emerges as the dominant superpower.

I'm sure you've noticed that technology tends to take a jump forward after a big war.

But its no matter; if anything its better. Modern medicine has cut infant mortality down below 10% and your kids go to school. Your three sons help you around the house and with the animals after school, your two daughters help their mother keep the house clean and prepare dinner.

Life is getting faster but mostly all is good.

Eventually your kids grow up and marry at 19-21 as you did, by 22 they have 4-5 kids. Their sons fight in WWII.

Enter television.

You remember having seen a TV once as a boy, in the window of a big department store downtown.

WWII advances technology a fuck load. In the twilight years of your life you start to see everyone has a car and everyone has a TV. TV is ubiquitous by the time you die in 1957.

The first part of the 20th century was market by dramatic urbanization.

A smaller and more manageable house and property, better schooling (with longer hours) and the only animals to be fed are your dog Scooter and your cat Whiskers.

TV technology improves exponentially (as it is continuing to do today). With nothing for the kids to do, you plonk them in front of the TV.

TV has been controlled by (((Them))) since the start, so while it may not always have contained subversion, it always had the potential to.

Kids born in the early-mid Fifties were the first generation to be raised by television.

The Baby Boomers...I don't need to make a list but has any generation ever perpetuated more evil on the world?

They did the same to their kids. Born between 1975 and 1985 (notice kids born to women 24-27 years old and not 19-22 years old). Many of us are in this cohort.

TV is still big and going strong and most certainly pushes an agenda, but a new device to raise kids has stepped to the fore; the smartphone.

Encouragingly, there are still pockets of the internet where dissent is allowed and encouraged - hence based-as-fuck Generation Z.

But of course not everyone born to boomer parents is an NPC; Roosh isn't, I'm not, many of you aren't.

Because yes, I did watch a fuck ton of TV as a kid, but I also rode BMX, played hockey, caught frogs in the creek, smoked weed, chased girls and 'cruised around on a Thursday night'. By the time the internet became ubiquitous, I would have been 15-16.

Incidentally, as much bad press as video games got when I was a kid, that's where this meme came from, they're fully in the mainstream now (so they're a (((target)))) and they actually seem to do less to stifle individuality.

Yeah there's lots of NPCs, but not everyone is destined to become an NPC, even people born today.

So who are the NPCs?

The children and grandchildren of the Boomers who lived in urban settings and were raised by TV and told they're special unique snowflakes are the NPCs.

Think it's a reach?

Look back at my example of the guy born in 1880 who had eleven kids (five surviving).

Look at not where people have two or maybe three at most.

It's never been safer in human history to be a kid than in North America post 1950.

...oh yeah, because about fifteen years back TV told everyone that around every bush there was someone wanting to abduct (and probably rape) their kids.

It's funny you mention both of these points, because when I heard of this NPC meme and lack of inner monologue, it immediately reminded me of why I gave up weed, especially when alone, and how so many people report a completely different experience to mine. I always struggled with sleep (and still do) because no matter how physically or mentally tired I am, as soon as I lay down and close my eyes, my inner monologue just goes into overdrive and it's hard to turn it off (incidentally, same when I'm taking a hot shower, which is why I started doing mostly cold ones). It's gotten a little bit better with prayer (as some people suggested here), but I still struggle with falling asleep (1 hour normally). But when I used to smoke weed regularly, I'd smoke before bedtime and then stay awake thinking for up to 4 hours, it was killing me. And even outside of sleep, it would just make my mind race with thoughts. Most people I relayed this to however would be shocked as for them it would calm them down and help them sleep. There's probably a handful of people who experience the same as me, most others do not - and it seems to be the NPC types who find weed shuts their mind even more than normal.

Now on to the emotion vs. logic - I don't think NPCs have emotions either, or at least, they are unable to emotionally relate in a non-programmed manner to non-generic stimuli. Perhaps it's more a spiritual issue than emotional, but it gets expressed through emotions too. For example, if you listen to a beautiful piece of music, you should be emotionally and spiritually moved, not necessarily thinking about the meters and harmonic theory behind it.

Most NPCs I have known personally are incapable of emotionally relating to beautiful music, art, or whatever - inlcuding ones that have studied musical theory for many years, but then are completely ok with listening to Taylor Swift or Madonna. These people react with anger to a few triggers but they are not emotionally involved on a deeper level with anything. They listen to crap generic music, watch crap generic movies and read (if they do) crap generic books, and they enjoy crap generic conversation - anything beyond this they have an adverse reaction, or no reaction at all. Some of them however have jobs that require some level of logical thinking (programmers, lawyers, doctors), but once outside of that narrow sphere, they are the most boring and predictable people, and it's sad how emotionally and spiritually dead they are.

Just my two cents.

The ideas are created in your head all the time, and you can’t shut them off, but they don’t come in language, but in jumps of logic, and you just wait for them to come. I've studied a lot in this area, and at times their description of enlightenment is essentially a 85 IQ Third Worlder who has only basic drives of fatigue, hunger, and sex with no future orientation, especially when coming from a rent-a-mystic who is regurgitating the mystics of old.

Then again, the 85 IQ man is filled with nonstop desire and a fragile ego. You have to carefully apply mystical teachings to your situation. For me it's to understand desire, not be enslaved by the ego, and let go of fear. Tao is the best balance I've found, but it's still up to you fit the teachings in a modern environment.

Ultimately, it comes down to control. If your mystical teachings allow you to be more easily controlled or directed (e.g. yoga consumerism, $80 yoga pants, spending thousands on meditation retreats), you're in NPC land. If the teachings allow you to travel your own path and increase your freedom, you're likely applying it the way it was intended.
