Weight training with Jeff Cavaliere

Jeff Cavaliere is a certified Physical Therapist and was the head physical therapist for the New York Mets (it was his dream job) before he decided to become an entrepreneur and create his own product, Athlean-X.

I watch a lot of his videos because none of it is the "bro-science" that many of us have encountered when we first set foot in the gym and try to navigate the world of weightlifting, on our own.

I highly recommend following Jeff because of the fact his videos are so informative, educational, and he shows you exactly how to exercise each muscle group. He makes working out fun.

Also, if you watch his exercise videos he will take a highlighter (he's well known for this) and mark lines on himself to show how the muscle works and the direction it works in.

Please, let me know if any of you follow or know about Jeff Cavaliere and what you think of his videos.

Below is a video of Jeff's on training for better abs:

I actually watch a lot of youtube fitness, has helped me gain ~40 lbs of muscle over the last 5 years (no joke or exaggeration, I used to weigh 160 and got to 225 lbs).

My thoughts on Jeff-

Pro:
-Clearly explains how to target muscles
-Great advice on avoiding injuries
-Trains pro athletes, obviously knows what he is talking about

Con:
-Does not explain how to balance training volume and exercise selection when creating a program, and this is hugely important for making long term gainz
-People who rely on him to build strength and muscle seriously underperform
-His advice "works" a lot of the time because he is training genetic freak elite athletes

Overall, if you know you want to start doing an exercise (squat, incline bench, etc) his videos are must watch, so you can learn to do it correctly.

But, in terms of actually writing out your program, his videos provide no help with that, even though it is essential to making continuous progress.

In terms of actual training advice, Jason Blaha is excellent, but has some downsides himself-

Pro:
-Excellent knowledge of exercise selection, training volume, and how to use these to make gainz
-Offers great training advice for beginner, intermediate, and expert lifters, he himself is an accomplished powerlifter
-Nutrition advice is top notch

Con:
-He is completely crazy outside of lifting
-Over 20% body fat, looks like shit
-Not as likable as Jeff Cavaliere

I presume his youtube videos are an investment in the programmes that he sells.

I have just started the AX1 one, I don't want to think about designing programme, I just want to do one.

I am subscribed to him, Jeff Nippard and Alpha Destiny. Those three are imho most interesting fitness youtubers out there, each one being unique in some regard.

I haven't watched any of Jason's videos yet, but does he look like one of those Iron Man competition guys? Some of those guys have a serious gut going on.

Yes, of course, he's trying to sell a product but I think he creates some of the most well-informed videos and doesn't drone on about random workouts that don't accomplish much or anything at all. He gets straight to the point and the videos are conveniently short.

I agree, before we can design our own program it helps to begin a program already laid out for you until you can get a better grasp of what works and doesn't work for you.

I'll definitely have a look at those other two YouTubers. Cavaliere can be corny in his videos with his protege Jesse but they add purpose to his message.

His videos are great. He uses his knowledge of physiotherapy to great effect, giving advice directly target muscles better while avoiding injuries.

I don't use his training programs so I won't comment on those, but for knowledge on how to perform certain exercises or how to target specific muscles, his youtube videos are excellent sources of information.

Most folks here know of JC. He's one of the most popular fitness personalities on youtube. His videos are very informative and focus heavily on injury avoidance, rehab, alternative movements, and targeted muscle training. At the end of the day his videos are to promote his brand. He wants you to buy his training programs, supplements, and other products. I don't know anyone who has tried any of his stuff so I can't speak on it's effectiveness, but the dude has an impressive resume and the physique to back it up.

I can't speak for his programs either but I feel if I could afford his programs then I would like to give them a shot, someday. Now, I have spoken to others online that have tried his programs and they've said they had a significant improvement in their stamina, physique, and mental clarity. Of course, take that with a grain of salt but I would trust his methods and knowledge over those without a degree in PT

It's a pleasant surprise to know that I'm not the only one who watches his videos. I tried searching on here for info on him but couldn't find anything, so, decided to make this thread for future reference.

He definitely is trying to sell his brand and supplement line, and like you've mentioned he's got a solid background in PT and doesn't mess around with his dieting or workout routine.

Great suggestion. I like his no B.S. style and appreciate he doesn't speak in incomprehensible jargon.

He's right about diet too.

This thread has coincided well with me starting the 90-day AX1 programme. I will try and log some of my progress here. If the course goes well, I would see no reason why I wouldn't go on to AX2 which is the muscle building one (in between there is the TNT course which is a remedial programme that works on 1 or 5 muscle groups to iron out residual weaknesses before AX2).

I would be thoroughly interested in your progress, and eventually like to purchase the program myself, in good time. As of today, I saw the price of AX-1 Unlimited-Lifetime Access at $97.00 (One time payment). Considering everything that he puts out on YouTube and the knowledge he possess about PT, I'd say it's worth it.

Jason Blaha fucking sucks.

I can't say enough bad about him.

The guy lived on the fucking dole for years in the UK.

He also claimed to be a lot of military things that he is most definitely not. If you don't believe me, look up Jason Blaha stolen valor on youtube. If not, I'll post it later, on my phone. Maybe it's "Jason Blaha exposed" I can not remember at the moment.

I know for a fact that Jason Blaha lives off youtube views now (in spite of the demonitization). Do not sponsor him. If you respect yourself as a man, do not watch his videos.

I have no idea who this Jeff Cavaliere guy is but I'll look him up.

As far as badass fitness personalities on youtube, I can't recommend Eric Bugenhagen enough. The guy is strong as fuck. Everything he talks about sounds crazy but you look up the studies and find out that he did his homework, he simply delivers his content in an entertaining and ballistic way.

Alphadestiny is great too. I don't much care for his style, but the man is extremely strong and he believes in some off-the-beaten-path theories like nucleus overload.

To that credit, I must give it to Team 3D Alpha. The man has some interesting videos and some interesting theories. He came up with the nucleus overload theory (look it up) and his channel is basically all about training every day. Hitting the bodypart you want with very light weight very hard for two months, take a month or two off, and then resume training. The theory is that the nuclei in the muscle cells multiply with the high volume and low intensity. Once you resume normal training, the muscle group grows immensely. Alphadestiny talks about how he did pushups and pullups for years and what blew up with weight training for him what his traps, forearms, lats, and pecs. One of my buddies has worked shitty manual labor jobs his whole life, he deadlifted 350 lbs the first time he performed the lift.

Not really youtube related, but Jamie Lewis of chaosandpain.blogspot has been churning out some great articles lately. Real quality content if you can stand the gore/porn.

“I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning, and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That’s how you build a first-class operation.”

Eric Helms and Omar Isuf are also cool dudes. Sometimes I watch Bugenhagen because of his crazy motivational lifting vids, even though his style is unrelatable to me (too high energy). Alexander Leonidas (coolest name ever btw), i.e. Alpha Destiny has to be my favorite youtube fitness personality. His advice has helped me really much regarding some stuff and I consider paying for his NE program once I have necessary prerequisites to do so.

P. S. Regarding nucleus overload, I considered doing arms at home on tuesdays/thursdays but at the end I didn't go for it as I think I don't have enough work capacity to do so (something not many talk about). It would probably affect my recovery and in that case might lead to biceps tendonitis or such. Just because of lot of work on such small muscles.

When you mention 'nucleus overload' is that the technical word for 'overtraining'? I haven't heard the term before but it is very interesting.

Thanks Stalin, I'll have a look at some of those.

Below is another video by Jeff but in this video he wants you to focus on the intensity of any exercise that you perform to get the most gains:

It might be technical term for overtraining, but when researching topic thoroughly it seems much more than that. We are talking here about guys like athletes and them blowing up in hypertrophy when they start lifting, just because they subjected their muscles to rigorous day after day training and thus making "nuclei" being full of potential for growth. For example, Olympic sprinters explode in leg hypertrophy when doing squats.

Okay, I see what you're saying. I might consider testing it out for myself to see if it is something I would add to my yearly routine.

I was partly wrong about calling it overtraining, and 'nuclei overload' reminded me of 'high-intensity interval training' when I looked up videos on it.

Jeff Cavaliere sort of mentions it in an 'overtraining' video he did:

Jeff is great.

But there are a lot of other very fit, very strong people who train in other ways. When you look like that you can literally put together any halfway coherent thought regarding training and sell it.

I'm gonna respectfully disagree with you on that good sir. Jeff has a Masters degree in PT and I believe he also has a degree in nutrition.

And all of his material is backed by thousands of clinical studies.

Yeah the fitness industry is rife with bullshitters and fake-it-till-you-make-it types. I've known a few dudes in the gym who did personal training on the side and sold remote programming and worked in circles with other dudes who did too. Guys who didn't know shit and just wrote up aimless workouts and nutrition plans that made their clients feel like they were doing work

How much science do you think is really devoted to building a bigger, more ripped, better athlete? Do you think the scientific community is really focused on getting jacked and ripped?? No.

When it comes to something like this, anecdotal evidence and experience is way more valuable than fitness "science". Just look around, plenty of beasts train in plenty of different ways. Different genetics, different training, different diets, different use of pharmaceuticals. Many of those ways don't have a scientific study to back them.

If science was the key, layne Norton would look like Jeff cavalier.
