Just type in "hair" into Yelp and find someone reputable.

I have shit hair that I can do nothing with, it's VERY thin, my hair line is really high and receeding and I don't have a clue what to do with it. I just go to the barbers and basically ask for a short back and sides because of lack of options. When I puit wax, gel or anything on it looks bad, because it's so thin it doesn't work well at all and just clumps together. I used to use gel but a mate told me in uni my hair looked better without anything in it so stopped and haven't put anything in it for years. Pretty boring hair style really but now I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it. Scared to go into a fancy salon and tell them to do whatever they like because I'd expect to come out with something 'cool' and 'trendy' that'd make me look like a massive twat. Nor do I like how much these cuts cost.

your problem is going to a salon. Go to a barber shop like real men [Image: smile.gif]

Sure for short hair. But if your hair is long than you should go to a stylist.

The only way regular guys should wear long hair is all the same length.
Just get the ends trimmed every 2 months.

Only gay guys or male fashion models can get away with having their long hair "styled".

Why not just shave it all off if it looks bad? It'll probably look better that way, you can do it yourself, and it's low maintenance.

You obviously have short hair. No need to hate or judge guys who don't want short hair. But taking your advice on "same length" would lead to this:

Layering is important.. Again, go to a stylist.

I think that would look worse. my hairline is quite high up my head (but I can hide that fact with my fringe) reckon it'd add about 10 years on to my age.

Year after year I've been having the same problem: where to get my haircut done by competent stylists. Everywhere I go the asshole doesn't listen to what I want or starts getting "creative" in ways that I hate. Sometimes I try to let the artist do their thing, other times I try to get very specific on what I want. Neither of these strategies seems to work. I almost always come home pretty pissed off.
out. Might save me some money to boot.

You're not alone! I think our problem comes down to a few things. First, I doubt that many competent people get into hairstyling to begin with. It doesn't pay enough, even at good salons in big cities (though I'm sure the best of the best do quite well). Second, personality: consider that even a talented stylist is going to make mistakes or have unhappy customers through no fault of their own occasionally. Not fun for the stylist! Therefore, the people who stay in the industry have to have thick skin. I believe a lot people who have thick skin also have reckless personalities w.r.t. pleasing the customer. It explains why so many of them don't listen and just start cutting! Third (this is the only concession I make to the stylists) it's genuinely difficult for a stylist to know what you think looks good. If you are picky (like I am) you probably have strong opinions about what looks best on you, but objectively, some of those beliefs are likely to be bunk or at least things that other people just won't notice. Aesthetics is like that, particularly when we're evaluating our own appearance. But this concession only applies to skilled stylists who are weak listeners (in this case at least you'll get something that probably doesn't look bad to other people).

I've noticed that some men look good in very short, dirt-cheap barber haircuts that would be a complete looks-disaster for me. Eventually I realized that those are the same guys who have larger, well-shaped heads. The same guys who would look good shaved. All the guys on this board saying 'go to a barber!' probably fall into this category; either that or they don't realize how much better they could look with a decent haircut.

From my experience, if the girl is slammin' hot, do not get your hair cut by her. Wait for the troll or the gay guy. The hot girls would fuck it up all the time even when I gave them directions. The others would follow directions and would have actual styling skills.

I have battled with this dilemma my entire life until I figured it out...

I now have 3 hairSTYLISTS (female). In the 3 towns I spend the majority of my time in. They are all attractive, although 1 is older than 40. Their shops are not the highest of end, but the girls are neat, gorgeous, and sweet.

Lesson: If someone can't take pride in their own appearance, how can they take pride in yours? Pick a cute hair stylist and stick with her. You'll be glad you did. Also, tip generously and they'll always look forward to your appearance.

Best,
Easy

Guys, the kings of ridiculous inept hairstyles are Russian/Ukrainian dudes. You haven't seen anything till you lay foot in these places.

And they carry purses!!!

Like it has been said before go in with a clear idea of what you want pictures and the vibe you're trying to go with (this one is important) and how much maintenance you're willing to do. Make sure you go to a place with an actual stylist who has gone to a respectable school and not some community college b/s and get someone who looks like they give a shit about their appearance not that alt girl who barely passed highschool and thinks hairstyling is taking a chainsaw covered in rainbow paint to your head. If you're going for a more classic shorter/medium hair look find yourself a good barber who has been in it since the days of Frank Sinatra and who runs a busy joint.

I have a similar issue but i dont care really.Im a regular at a decent barber shop and get a kind of an undercut hipster-ish haircut(but basically a "short back and sides")and a cutthroat razor shave for the beard once a month.
I dont shave at all between visits to the barber shop as my beard grows quite thick and i cant be bothered tackling it myself anymore...
The rest of the time these come in handy:

I dont go down the fedora path anymore due to the over-saturation of them these days(thanks to androgynous hipsters and wack douchebags that ruined that one wearing faggoty purple ones etc) but this herringbone number is quite smooth and great in winter.
