Everything below you is pitch black, so you have no idea if it's a smooth surface or sharp hill. It's perfectly legal though, and engine failures are not common.

They claim he “invested” in the plane as if to make him sound like he’s some kind of baller. You don’t invest in a 48 year old plane. Investment implies payoff. This plane was a black hole you shovel cash into. The kind idiot who would take 5 people for a ride in a plane he’s not qualified to fly, is the same type of idiot who would disregard safety and maintenance schedules.

This reminds me of jfk jr and his poor decisions that ultimately led to his premature and highly preventable death.

Almost a certainty. According to records, N9456P was a Piper PA-24-260 Comanche with a maximum gross weight of 2,900 pounds. Empty weight without passengers, luggage, and fuel is about 1,750 pounds. 6 people, 2 men, 2 women, 2 unknown would be about 840 pounds (assuming 110 each for the two girls, 170 each for the two guys, 140 pounds for the two unknown). This is already at 2,590 pounds without fuel and without luggage. Fuel is probably over 400 pounds. Baggage is probably at least 20 pounds per person so another 120 pounds but probably had a lot more than 20 pounds each. Needless to say they were well over the limit.*

Another great reminder why you don't fly with an inexperienced pilot. This would have been spotted right away.

I have a few acquaintances who own some of those small planes. One is a pilot and he once crashed due to low engine troubles.

Those planes are tricky and due to their small size are far less safe than commercial jets or private jets. You can joke and have fun all you want when you are safely in the air, but doing it during takeoff or landing is incredibly dangerous. There is a lot an experienced pilot can do when you are high in the air - in fact some of the best teachers let their students do various dangerous maneuvers in order to learn how to cope with it. But you do that with an experienced guy at high altitude.

In this case I doubt that she was good at it at all, then she lets others goof around. That's how evolution works.

Those small planes drop fast. My highly experienced pilot friend only survived because cables absorbed a good portion of the impact - or otherwise all of them would have died. And very low altitudes can be deadly.

They have (fixed) wings to provide lift. If they drop fast, something went terribly wrong. Probably the weight is not balanced properly and the plane becomes inherently unstable. F-16s can be inherently unstable, but they have fly-by-wire systems adjusting the control surfaces several times per second and keeping the plane stable. Small civilian planes cannot afford that luxury.

It is not unusual for private aircraft to be over forty years old. There are very few manufacturers of new small aircraft left, because the expense of lawsuits whenever some doctor crashed into the side of a mountain.

Here's my shot in the dark.

During takeoff the instagram whores were not sitting in their seats. They were probably a little drunk (or a lot drunk) and busy doing their jobs, ie taking selfies while kneeling in the seats or standing in the aisle or whatever. Fair odds they were all packed on the side of the plane where the windows were facing the lights of the city for obvious selfie-based reasons.

So the pilot decides he's going to play Captain BigMan and either go for a steep climb and/or gain some altitude before banking hard. Figures he can get the girls to scream and get a little wet.

Possibility one. He climbs hard (possible in that plane?) and all the dumbshits along with all their luggage tumble to the back of the plane. This causes it to become extremely tail heavy. It momentarily looks like the world's dumbest helicopter and plummets to earth.

Possibility two. He banks hard, sending the remainder of the passengers and luggage on the high side to the low side. The pilot can no longer straighten up or simply panics and fails to use the options available. The plane knifes into the ground sideways.

I've thought about taking flying lessons but those small planes seem dangerous as fuck. The wind tosses those light planes around like a kite while you're going 100mph trying to land. A little mistake you're RIP.

The Cirrus SR22 is the most popular, sexy personal plane right now, they're supposedly the safest yet they still have hundreds of fatalities every year. It looks cool as hell but once you start going 130mph+ you're risking your life just getting in the damn thing.

Noone owns newer aircraft except doctors and wealthy people. Even a basic Cessna model is like 280k. The only affordable planes for normies are at least 30 years old like this one.
