Darwin is a cruel mistress.

Investment implies payoff. This plane was a black hole you shovel cash into. The kind idiot who would take 5 people for a ride in a plane he’s not qualified to fly, is the same type of idiot who would disregard safety and maintenance schedules.
It's unprofessional to comment on anything before the NTSB report is complete, but some things stand out as interesting:
1) "6 months of flying lessons" and "... In the process of obtaining his license". If the guy didn't have his license and was not flying with an instructor, this is beyond bad.
2) I saw in another news article that he bought the plane as well. That's normally not recommended for a new pilot since there's a large amount of administration work. If the guy was looking to have a good time, being mostly interested in traveling and nightlife, it makes me question why he wouldn't just join a club and rent their planes. It's normally cheaper, safer and less work. The club will normally send a guy up with you to make sure you're safe before they let you rent a plane. It's not a checkride and mostly a formality for decent pilots.
3) They flew a single engine piston cross country, at night, over hilly terrain. Anyone who has practiced engine-out landings in an SEP will know how difficult it is to find a safe place to land at night. Everything below you is pitch black, so you have no idea if it's a smooth surface or sharp hill. It's perfectly legal though, and engine failures are not common.

6 adults plus baggage on a Piper PA24, I'm guessing it was overloaded.

Four of the six people who died when their private plane crashed during a flight from Arizona to Las Vegas on Monday have been identified as Instagram stars, models and nightclub promoters.
...Aaaaaand nothing of value was lost that day.

I suspect that the weight was not balanced properly, resulting in instability.
If it was merely a matter of excess of weight, the plane could have glided.

How would it glide on take-off?

Bella Thorne has revealed she earns $65,000 for a single Instagram post, and even bought her house thanks to money she made exclusively through social media.
The former Disney Channel star, 20, appears in the documentary Inside The Life of Bella Thorne, released on Tuesday by Vogue, which gives a 17-minute, behind-the-scenes look at Bella's career and how she has transitioned away from her polished Disney image.
At one point, she can be seen discussing her social media rates on the phone with an unknown person, lying down on a bed and propped up on a pillow.

If the plane crashed, I assume it was actually aloft for at least a couple of seconds.

Those small planes drop fast. [...] And very low altitudes can be deadly.

That route at night is pitch fucking black once you leave the city. This was made worse by low illumination, I'd have to check the sun and moon data but I'm guessing they had 0% illumination at the time of their flight.

Was the pilot even qualified to fly by instruments?
Didn't people learn anything from JFK Jr's idiocy??
