Newbie pilot let his Instagram celebrity friends fly his plane... it crashes

Everyone on board was killed, including two WBs. Snapchat reveals that a male friend did take over the controls at one point.

Four of the six people who died when their private plane crashed during a flight from Arizona to Las Vegas on Monday have been identified as Instagram stars, models and nightclub promoters.

Models Mariah Coogan, 23, and Helena Lagos, 22, nightlife promoter Anand 'Happy' Patel, 26, and nightclub host and aspiring pilot James Pedroza, 28, were all on board the Piper PA-24 Comanche when it crashed into a golf course moments after taking off at around 9pm.

They spent the weekend at the Phoenix Lights Festival and were on their way back to Las Vegas.

Before they took off from Scottsdale Airport, Coogan shared videos from the plane on her Instagram story.

She excitedly filmed herself in her seat and spun the camera round to show Patel who she affectionately called by his nickname Happy.

Authorities will not confirm who was flying the plane but they confirmed that it was not Pedroza, who owned it and who was in the process of obtaining his license.

Neither the FAA nor the National Transportation Safety Board will comment on their ongoing investigations into the crash.

This reminds me of "The Little Pilot That Couldn't." Anyone remember that news story? Probably not, since it's from 1996.

Back then, there was a father who was set on making his 7-year-old daughter the youngest pilot in history to fly cross-country. That's not a typo. She was 7 -- as in "second grade."

Which is also the age she died. The dad died along with her because (surprise surprise)...she crashed the plane. Smart-ass radio talk show hosts gave her the name "The Little Pilot That Couldn't."

I know this sounds like I'm making it up, but here is a link to the article on their deaths for proof.

Moral: Maybe it's best not to put your life in the hands of 7-year-olds and Instagram "models" and "stars." Maybe -- just maybe -- experienced, license pilots are needed to fly airborne vehicles.

Maybe they'll make movies like Buddy Holly and the La Bamba guy.

Except they be called something like "90k Followers: the @dj_911 Story" or "Bootea to Tragedy, the life of @bexckylicious."

Two words that every aspiring pilot knows: spatial disorientation. 6 months of flight lessons Barely qualifies you to operate a plane on your own, in good weather during the day. You’ve got no business going up at night with several passengers onboard. Stupidity kills.

"flying flight experience"

Thank God it wasn't the tragic alternative, a crashing flight experience.

Oh, shit. Wait.

Shit! Did they let her handle the controls just because she was hot? The thirst is real.

It's unprofessional to comment on anything before the NTSB report is complete, but some things stand out as interesting:

1) "6 months of flying lessons" and "... In the process of obtaining his license". If the guy didn't have his license and was not flying with an instructor, this is beyond bad.

2) I saw in another news article that he bought the plane as well. That's normally not recommended for a new pilot since there's a large amount of administration work. If the guy was looking to have a good time, being mostly interested in traveling and nightlife, it makes me question why he wouldn't just join a club and rent their planes. It's normally cheaper, safer and less work. The club will normally send a guy up with you to make sure you're safe before they let you rent a plane. It's not a checkride and mostly a formality for decent pilots.

3) They flew a single engine piston cross country, at night, over hilly terrain. Anyone who has practiced engine-out landings in an SEP will know how difficult it is to find a safe place to land at night. Everything below you is pitch black, so you have no idea if it's a smooth surface or sharp hill. It's perfectly legal though, and engine failures are not common.

6 adults plus baggage on a Piper PA24, I'm guessing it was overloaded.

This. THIS. Annoys the shit out of me. They are not 'stars.' They are not models. They are thots. Hoes. Whores. Fap material. Booty selfies do not qualify you as a model or star.

Because that's commonly what happens. Most air crashes statistically seem to happen within 5 minutes of taking off or landing. It's why I'm always praying hardest at the beginning and end of a flight.

^^^I agree, especially with two "Instagram Models" traveling with them-there was a shitton more luggage than 2 normal girls. It is also possible those chicks went shopping on their vacation, adding even more to the weight on the fatal flight.

I remember that.

She was all over the world media days before she crashed. It was said she was having to use stilts/prosthetics in order to reach the pedals.

In this incident: am I correct in reading that the ONLY 'qualified' pilot in the plane was someone who was still yet to get their license ..?

Oh, shit. Wait.

It was both. Short flying, even shorter crashing, flight experiences.

In any case, reading the description of all people onboard, and that the plane naturally crashed, I am:
