Cambridge Analytica and Weaponized AI

Cambridge Analytica is in the news as part of the Facebook scandal. It seems the communists are outraged that the right used social media data sold to them by Facebook; apparrently they thought they had a monopoly on this.

Anyway, scandal aside, it appears that weopanized AI is a jeanie that has left the bottle and can't be put back.

This article, published a year ago, makes some amazing claims about how much data is out there about everyone and how powerful that data is when coupled with some modest AI and clever marketing techniques. For example, the allegation is that Bannon targeted likely Hillary voters (rather than undecideds) and simply persuaded them to not vote. Unclear if this is what he actually did or this is just sour grapes - after all, Dems really preferred Bernie Sanders but Hillary rigged the primary, so we don't know if lower Dem turnout was due to Sanders not being on the ballot or clever marketing by Bannon. So take the claims with a grain of salt. In any event, the predictive ability of data profiles is a given, and is a jeanie that has left the bottle.

Perhaps the biggest irony is, if true, it was Facebook and Zuck, not Russia, who colluded with Trump.

Facebook is a bubble consisting of fb's censoring, AI bots, and attention whoring users.

FB has a huge network effect so I wouldn't call it a bubble. But its not as complete as some other networks like Tencent.

Well its not like people are going to stop attention whoring.

Facebook is in a great space given that they own Instagram, which is where most people have migrated. Their real risk is if they aren't able to buy whatever new network comes out. They have done a good job beating snapchat, though many of their woes are self inflicted, like the Rihanna thing that just happened.

If you have an open profile on any social media site, any script kiddy can scrape your profile and take pretty much any info they want. Lock your shit down or get off of it entirely if you want any semblance of privacy in today's world. Sure 270k people signed up for this app, but I guarantee you that when it went in and took these people's friend's lists, the profiles it was able to get useful info were open to the public and likely posted on google.

This right here. Anybody can do OSINT work and find your life, if you let them. Don't be a dork and get off social media, period. I have a LinkedIn for career IT stuff but I still use a fake last name and have privacy settings on max.

Also probably would recommend Tor Browser for viewing RVF. If you are on social media, they can correlate and track your browser fingerprint to other sites, such as this forum.

The entire NSA, FBI, and CIA has complete 100% full access to your entire profile since 2010 or so. Local Police Departments can get that same access if they present a warrant. Scraping is old ass news. All those shitty phone apps and games people play scrape your profile as well.

I have not updated or added anything to mine since 2012 just for that reason alone. If they want current photos/information of me and my family, let em work harder for it, what I say. For me it's a placeholder account for family and old blue pill friends.

On the other hand we might have to abandon all these liberal platforms. Youtube is banning gun videos today. Dipshits aren't banning violent videogames though? Oh yeah, because if they did that Youtube would die in a week or would only be for fashion, music, gossip, and makeup. It's ran by girls management wise, might as well kick all masculine things off it anyway.

It's probably time to exit all these shitty Democrat party owned platforms honestly. Regulation is not going to happen, especially under Trump, unless they ban his Twitter account and make him furious. They force bakers to make cakes for fags, but if we want videos about guns, that's illegal....

If conservatives have so much fucking money and resources, why is it that no one bothers starting freer platforms? If I was flowing with dough, I know I would.

Who says they do? Most of the rich people seem to be liberals/progressives. If you break down the 2016 election results by income, the upper and lower incomes people went majority Democratic. Trump won the middle of the income spectrum.

You have no idea....

Old money, people with ranches, landowners, real estate barons, oil and gas millionaires, traders, etc. etc.

They just have no fucking interest in technology. One of the reasons why is because they do not have much need for it outside of a frontend website.

Also income is not wealth. Wealthy people do not have to pay themselves 400K on paper just to look good on census/voter data. Most of the time, they are not trying to be open about their political affiliations either. Liberals are more open and showy, which is why everyone can quickly name 5 liberal billionaires.

Good hygeine on the net is important, but I don't know how personally identifiable that info is. Its mostly used in large batches. The scary thing is that with an AI-engine and some money for testing, the effectiveness of propoganda goes way up.

Cookies from various sites - think about it, if I know just 3-4 sites you visit daily, I can pinpoint you in a crowd. This is why if you check out a shopping site, their ads follow you around.
Browser passes along a lot of computer information such as your screen size, specs, etc.
IP address and possibly MAC (unique device ID)
Ads you are shown tend to save cookies for tracking.
The more factors someone has on you, the easier it is for them to pick you out and create a profile on you.

etc.

Nothing about the FB story is surprising.

As polar said, it is trivial to track someone programmatically through the browser.

All of these datasets are strewn around in data piles at every major company.

Why Facebook is a billion dollar business is cause they took the previously anonymous tracking and added your name and social info to that.

You should assume that every piece of info and data you generate on the web (where you go, what you write, what you type in to any form, etc etc) is saved and stored somewhere.

It takes way more effort to prevent this than most people are willing to do.

Could write a long long post on how to do this but hardly anyone would follow it to the letter and you'd have to give up most of the way you use things currently.

So we can expect that things will be status quo like this.

I think it would be much harder for governmental agencies and ad companies to track profiles if users provide false information.
If I ever return to fb, I'd use a VPN, provide a fake place of living and like both liberal and conservative articles.
Goes without saying that the entire browsing history be deleted on a regular basis.

This works until you log in exactly one time either without the VPN or in a browser that has been tagged...

Not to mention there are plenty of tools to correlate things like writing patterns, location, etc. etc.

Basically, the rest of your actual data will give you away even if you keep a false profile...

Correct.

Not only do you need to be perfect every time, but the VPN you use needs to be truly anonymous and does not keep logs, is not in the 14 eyes, AND does not have an extradition treaty with the USA.

Good luck with that.

Agreed. But I was not talking about 100% anonymity and safety which requires expert knowledge to get.
My point is that with a few simple measures it's possible to confuse most trackers.
For example when I still used facebook, I was shown spanish ads when I used a VPN via a spanish IP. They obviously discard my home city and go after the IP address.
Other sites and tracking companies go after tracking cookies (which I block), browser fingerprint (I spoof this with a Firefox addon on my desktop), or likes on fb. From the article OP linked:

Quote:Quote:

By correlating subjects’ Facebook Likes with their OCEAN scores -- a standard-bearing personality questionnaire used by psychologists -- the team was able to identify an individual’s gender, sexuality, political beliefs, and personality traits based only on what they had liked on Facebook.

Not that I plan on returning to fb, but if that ever happened I'd "like" some random posts in order to confuse those automated trackers.

IMO, it's not worth the energy even trying to use a VPN.

If you want a practical level of anonymity and privacy, and want to save energy, just use Tor on public WiFi.

To Summarize:

VPN = Provides you "privacy" from any local adversaries, by encrypting data. But the provider still can see everything you are doing. You can bet that a few of these providers are 3 letter agencies in disguise.

Tor = Provides actual anonymity by encrypting, and then mixing your connections with millions of others. You can still be found out, and targeted. But in general it's much easier to use, costs nothing, and requires less trust than a VPN.

The FBI run many Tor exit nodes. I don't know why anyone thinks Tor is anon or safe to use. Tor has been compromised for at least 5 years now.

How do you think they catch all those kid porn idiots? It's not from snitchin.

Rawmeo, had he ever told me personally what he was doing before it happened, I would have told him he was fucked (if it was even true to begin with). It's clear he was not a real hacker or even security professional.

Tor is done. It's been done for a while. No black hat worth his salt, that is not compromised or a plant is using it without added obfuscation.

Don't fill these dudes heads up with illusions of grandeur. Unless you really know what you are doing (and you likely would not be reading advice on RVF), nothing is anon these days. It's mostly over. Unless you live in a country with no consequences (Russia/China), it's Live CDs and obfuscation (Which is not real security) like throw away dope phones. Problem is, they got access to cameras so they will try to catch your face on whatever wifi you bumming on, because the ISPs will betray you like someone else said.

Proxy hoppin still works, but the countries you do it through matter more than anything.

This is not the 90s or the 2000s.

Cambridge Analytica is not the only one doing this. Any company who requests permission to access Facebook, Google, Twitter, Instagram, etc. is accessing personal data for mining and Deep Learning algorithms. The idiots in the media, government, wherever who tried to set up Trump with this were all for the Obama Campaign getting a lot more useful information for free from Zuckerburg.

The funny thing is this company was selling magic (i believe they admitted as much). Chances are they were just gathering metadata to sell to other people.

Using Tor and VPN is useless if you choose to give away your own data for free. You are the product they sell and these pieces of human debris can figure out even anonymously who you are (think of the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon). Facebook has a tor website so you can use anonymous connections to give away your own personal information.

If you use one of of 6 main social media sites....it is the equivalent of using all 6. If you know a second cousin or a grandmother who uses facebook, you might as well be using it. Even if you are anonymous you really are not.
