Rough day for me, but getting out of work early to ride bikes and dinner with friends, so it'll end well. Looking forward to it, Happy Monday!

Came across this picture of Frank Zappa and his parents while researching something else. Made my day for no good reason.

Fell through, likely missed, but will try to reel it back in and in the meantime got other bait out to try to catch something fresh!

Multiple generations of Russians covering an Earth, Wind, and Fire song, with a mostly female violin section, and a hot back up singer.

It is easy to forget how amazing the internet is. Where else would you find something like this?

Made me smile.

True although I felt the process of going through the memories of the described emotions was positive, that's why it found its way here.

Was supposed to have two gigs this weekend, but the drummer got sick with pneumonia and sinusitis.
So I'm currently at my childhood home listening to my old CDs/vinyls and enjoying the peace and quiet of rural suburbia. And I still get paid for the gigs. [Image: banana.gif]

That's pretty cool. WBBS (Would Bang Backup Singer) and potentially more. Talented girl, from the group's website:

A talented vocalist, Ksenia can also sing in English, Chinese, Italian, Armenian, Kazakh and Bulgarian.

I am beginning to think that when I look for a wife I should be looking outside the USA for sure.

But I'm not looking for a wife yet, but practicing making babies I'm okay with.

Been failing at picking up girls (but it's just practice for eventual success), but I'm off for a hunting/camping trip for the weekend with a bunch of great people/family, so I'll come back with an even better mindset.

Happy Friday!

USA style: I janked with my IRS W-4's years ago to stay afloat with child support and my standard of living. I got audited. I sucked it up and had a gruesome bill. I got on a payment plan... which was like a 20-year thing. Earlier this year, strangely, I got an unexpected financial windfall (due to my hard work over the past two decades -- don't ask... I hardly know how it happened the way it went down ;-) and was able to pay off my entire IRS debt in full. Today, I finally received their acknowledgement letter that all of my debts with them are at a zero balance. I am having a beer or few... maybe more (see you over on the drunk thread if so :-)

Good on you, man. Taxes are a bitch, and it's great to have the government off your back with them. Until April, anyway.

I posted this in the 80's thread but I thought it was fitting for this thread. Its a performance of "Riddle Of Steel / Riders Of Doom" by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra conducted by Diego Navarro who also happens to be founder of Fimucite' Academy of Film Scoring

A little background

Many of you will recognize "Riddle Of Steel / Riders Of Doom" from an opening sequence in CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982). It, along withe entire musical score, was composed by legendary composer Basil Poledouris. Poledouris was tasked by director John Milius (Poledaris and Milius had worked together before on BIG WEDNESDAY (1978), and producer Dino De Laurentis to write a score for the epic action movie.

The challenge was that the star of the movie was Arnold Schwarzenegger, a world body building champion, with almost no acting experience and a funny accent. So the idea was to give Arnold minimal dialogue and tell as much of the story as possible through the musical score.

Not an easy task but oh boy did Poledouris pull it off. The orchestral score of this movie is easily one of the best ever. It conveys every emotional aspect of the film, drama, romance, mystery, evil etc...and most of all passion

Conan is driven by one passion: Revenge. His desire to avenge the murders of his father, mother and village is his obsession and a pure, primal,... instinctual. Its impossible not to be compelled

When you watch this flawless performance of RIDERS OF DOOM, notice in the very first second (0:01-03) the conductor, Navarro clench his fists and grit his teeth at his orchestra almost saying "Please please give me your very best and make this the fucking performance the piece deserves"

That too is passion. That too is compelling. Watch and listen to this and be inspired

Now go out and "crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of the women" That is best in life

Happy Saturday

That is the reigning champion of fantasy movies.

The soundtrack is amazing. I've had it on CD on and off over the years and listened to it many times.

And yes, the fact that Conan speaks very little is one of the strong points. His narrator is great in the first one, but sadly in number 2 a California accent has crept into the man's weirdo asian accent.

Had a great hunting/camping trip. We had a feast with all the tasty animals we caught and immediately prepped. The young men I'm mentoring and who I encouraged to go had a great time, were safe (there was significant potential danger present), and even better hunted far better than they had before.

I really shared their stoke and one of them nearly bested some of the better hunters there and was in the right place/right time to shoot a fine example that I'd missed my shot on earlier. I did well and avoided potential disaster with multiple witnesses that cheered my self-save. The video will be VERY entertaining.

Sitting around the campfire with a cold beer in hand while everyone told stories and enjoyed the solid company was incredible. One of the real elders even showed up and regaled us with amazing history of our group. This was a nice trip because in year's past I had a GF and this year no more, so it was good to put one in the books that was truly stellar.

I stayed long after most people had left to help my friends put away all their things so I could be of service to this great group. I'm part of the leadership/organizing team of this group so it felt great to be of service to some great people and friends. It was such a positive experience, I can't wait until the next one. Came back home and played volleyball as we watched the sunset then went and had a nice dinner and a bike ride/dive bar outing with good friends.

I slept like a rock last night, completely and thoroughly exhausted/satisfied. Looking forward to a solid week and farming some numbers for this weekend.

This Joe Rogan conversation with Vinnie Paz put me in a good mood for some unknown reason. It's long but worth it.

Maybe because Vinnie seems like such a dark dude (at least to someone who's only heard his music before) - but surprisingly he has a really positive vibe. Comes across as a genuine guy.

Mushrooms winning again.

Mushrooms have the power to eat plastic say scientists

Rima Sabina Aouf | 25 September 2018

Fungi can be used to break down waste plastic and create sustainable building materials, according to scientists from Kew Gardens in London.

The State of the World's Fungi 2018 report – the first of its kind – highlights the aspergillus tubingensis fungus, found in a Pakistani rubbish tip and first documented in 2017. It claims this substance can break down plastic in weeks rather than years.

Researchers say it could be used to deal with the global plastic-waste crisis, which has caused concern in the design industry and beyond.

Aspergillus tubingensis can grow on the surface of plastics, where it secretes enzymes that break the chemical bonds between plastic molecules.

"This ability thus has potential to be developed into one of the tools desperately needed to address the growing environmental problem of plastic waste," reads the report.

The report was compiled by a team of researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, which is one of the leading institutions for fungal research internationally.

It provides an overview of current knowledge about mushrooms and other fungi, and charts their usefulness to both the natural and industrial worlds.
The State of the World's Fungi 2018 report explores the potential uses of mushrooms and other fungi

The report documents the more than 2,000 new species of fungus discovered in 2017, explores the threats they face from a changing climate, and chronicles their potential uses.

"The State of the World's Fungi report has been a fascinating look into the fungal kingdom, revealing how little we know and the huge potential for fungi in areas as diverse as biofuels, pharmaceuticals and novel materials," Kew Gardens senior researcher Tom Prescott told Dezeen.

"Fungi are being considered as a potential sustainable source for building materials, with companies in the US researching the possibility of expanding this market."

As well helping to accelerate the decomposition of plastic, the report shows that species of fungus can also be used to remove pollutants out of soil.

White rot fungi varieties pleurotus ostreatus and trametes versicolor can help remove pollutants such as pesticides, dyes and explosives from soil or wastewater, by degrading toxic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) chemicals.

Trichoderma species, meanwhile, help with biofuels, by enabling the conversion of agricultural waste into sugars for ethanol.

The report also confirms that potential for mushroom-mycelium-based products to be used as replacements for polystyrene foam, leather and building materials – a topic that is being explored by a number of designers and architects.

In architecture, architect Dirk Hebel and engineer Philippe Block built their Mycotree to show how mycelium can used to create self-supporting structures, while The Living demonstrated the potential of mushroom bricks with its MoMA PS1 installation.

And in design, Sebastian Cox and Ninela Ivanova have shown how mycelium can be used to make leather-like furniture.

Kew Gardens – known for its expansive southwest London grounds and its recently renovated Victorian greenhouse – is home to a "fungarium" with some 1.25 million dried fungi specimens from all over the world.

It also runs a "Lost and Found Fungi" citizen science project to helps raise awareness of some of the UK's rarest species of fungus.

The organisation has launched a new website summarising the findings of The State of the World's Fungi report. More than 100 scientists from 18 countries collaborated with Kew Gardens scientists to assemble the "horizon-scanning" document.
