Miller's point is

I asked for your point of view, not Miller's.

Quote:Quote:

Well actually, if you continue reading the article it goes into detail on how corruption pervades everyday life there, so I don't really see how he negates my point.

He negates your point because:

A. He actually is a Russian, not an American whose expertise on the subject comes solely from Wikipedia.
B. He has not had to kill or bribe to succeed.

Unless you can show that he killed someone to reach his current station in life as an adult (you did, after all, claim that one HAD to do this to get anywhere if born in Russia), your entire point is negated.

Quote:Quote:

My original point was that it is far tougher being a minority in Europe than in the US, because the societies there are more homogenous and national identity is more tied to ethnic identity. He countered that there were 15% Muslims in Europe. My point is that he has nothing to be proud of - the fact that that minority group (justifiably or not, that's not the point) feels isolated and disconnected from society and very few members have risen to leadership positions proves that the US is a far more welcoming country to various ethnic groups than Europe is.

1. One inquiry for one group in one country does not prove that point. You will need far more evidence than that establish the very broad claim you are making (that immigrant life is much harder in Europe than in the USA). All you've done so far is cite an inquiry into the minds of a few young Dutch muslims which in itself cannot reliably establish greater hardship for all European immigrants over American ones.

2. Such opinions are also very common in the USA among some minority groups, who feel targeted, disconnected, marginalized and entirely isolated from society. Many immigrants often feel economically marginalized and shunned not just by ethnocentrism/nativism but by government policy. There are quite a few minorities who feel actively exploited not just by xenophobes, but by the government itself.

3. The US is much more unequal than its Western European peers(and nearly all developed nations, for that matter). This is a major factor when it comes to immigrants, who tend to start off lower on the economic totem pole than the native born-there is more distance between them and their native peers in the USA than there would be in Europe (or most other developed nations).

4. Whether their complaints are justifiable or not is relevant. You are making a broad claim here regarding the general difficulty of immigrant experiences in different places. You will not be able to rely on perception alone to make any conclusions here. You have to take an objective look at their conditions as well.

Quote:Quote:

Actually, I was quoting the person right above me.

Yes, and creating strawmen at the same time.

I am asking again: Who in here tried to claim that China would fill a hypothetical power vacuum left by the USA with greater benevolence?

The "person above you" ('Rah') made no such claim, so I must assume that you are creating a strawman here.

Quote:Quote:

My main point, though, is look at any other country in the world. With the exception of Western Europe and Northeast Asia,

Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Israel...all places in which I could easily think of being and all located distinctly outside of both Western Europe and Northeast Asia.

Quote:Quote:

And my main point w/ regard to Western Europe and Northeast Asia is that those countries have their national identity strongly tied to their ethnic identity that makes assimilation harder.

You haven't established this claim at all, and it is likely that you never will given its complete lack of accuracy.

This may be the case in Japan and S. Korea, but many states in Western Europe maintain very open immigration policies (as open, if not more so than the US) and have many well assimilated immigrants. Tensions obviously exist (there is no utopia on Earth), but their presence alone does not indicate that the immigrant experience in these places is harsher and/or more difficult than it is in the USA. Having been close to the immigrant experience on both sides of the Atlantic, I can say that I also find no anecdotal substantiation for your claim.

One could conceivably make the claim that assimilation is also rather uncommon in the USA-this is a highly divided nation, and many of those divisions (social and economic) run along deep racial lines.

The bottomline, however, is that I do not believe that one would necessarily be objectively worse off in many parts of Western Europe and other parts of the world. You've given no convincing reason to even consider the contrary.

The fact is that, as good as the USA can be, there are other nations that are also good. The USA has its unique benefits, money/income opportunity being the largest one (and the reason so many wish to come here), but it isn't the only show in town when it comes to maintaining a good quality of life, nor is it necessarily the best one. People are right to point this out.

Quote:Quote:

The UK.....is so closely linked to the US culturally and politically that it's not really a fair argument to say that it represents a distinct alternative.

This is just daft.

The USA and the United Kingdom have close historical bonds, but they are not nearly close enough to be indistinguishable. There are as many deep cultural differences present between the two as there are similarities, and anyone who has personal familiarity with both places/cultures (via residence or relatives) or has any understanding of their individual histories (read: anyone who took global studies in grade school) will know this.

This statement is beyond absurd.

Quote:Quote:

There just seems to be alot of America hate. Sure, some of it is merited, but look at the state of the world in general....the vast majority of the world has far more dysfunction than the US...it's hard to see as a tourist or an expat, but there's a reason why people still want to move to the US.

People move to the USA for money and economic opportunity. That doesn't preclude dysfunction.

I tell you something. American women are the least superficial women in the fucking world. And this comes from personal experience.

I'am a European guy, short (5ft10) and NOT good-looking. It's no problem for me to get lots of dates with hot American women (HB 7 or 8). Why? Because for them a man's looks/height is only one factor out of many. They also value a man's personality, his intellect, and what he has achieved in life.

This is not the case when it comes to Scandinavian women (especially Swedes and Norwegians). They are much more superficial, and a man's height is the only thing they're interested into.

I love American women!

And don't say you have only fatties there. We all know very well that there are plenty of beauties in the USA, we all know that! Go to Miami, to NYC, to southern California etc.

You're in the fattest developed nation on Earth. Female obesity rates are literally three times higher here than they are in Scandinavia.

There is a VERY serious shortage of fit women here as compared to other nations. Good girls exist, but there are not nearly as many.

Perhaps you're inadequate with regards to Scandinavian girls and it's not you're height that's the problem. 5ft10 is not so short.
And maybe American women think you're sophisticated just because you're European.

I actually like most of the American women I've met too,but then maybe I've been lucky. There's a huge population there so there is numbers in our favour!

1. 5'10 is not short. It is average American male height. To give you an idea, I'm 5'4 and I'm doing very well. Not extremely good (I'm also very lazy), but still much better comparing to the majority of local dudes.

2. If you're European, I don't really know where you get those A LOT of 7+ American women. I've seen probably one or two 7+ in more than six years here. Where are you from, Germany?

3. What do you mean by "getting dates"? This is very vague and can mean, for example, taking them for the dinner you're paying for.

Hmm... so which kind of dates are you getting?

Well, as a 'minority' living in Western Europe. I must agree that minorities have a somewhat better life in the USA than in Western Europe, especially if you're a bit arab/mediterannean looking like me and get confused for being a MUSLIM. From what I have noticed in the states (im talking about larger cities here like NYC, Miami, LA, etc), minorities actually get along very well. This is not the case here. Life here is much more segregated and you have to try very hard to be 'accepted' into social circles, at work and in society.

Far right party's have made it possible that minorities live a very hard life. I don't see such things in the USA. Here, some minorities aren't even allowed to go into nightclubs. If that would happen in the states, the club would get sued. As for taking an objective look, I am not only looking at immigrants of the lower economic ladder, but immigrants of all classes.

Anyways, I believe the level of xenophobia is higher in Europe than in the US due to far right parties inciting fear onto the public.

This is just way to general anyway. What does superficial mean? Being attracted to assholes? Money? Race? Status?

Given how important game is in attracting women, what does it even mean when it's said that women are superficial?

Ok, I admit that I was going much to far with my statement, which is much to general to be true.

I don't think it was that ridiculous. Are we defining superficial as being after qualities like wealth, looks and status over personality and character? If that's the case I don't think American women fare any worse than most countries. Isn't this just the way most women are period? We have 300 million people and a huge diversity in lifestyles. Everything from hoochies chasing NBA players to organic farming hippies living on communes.

It would be nice if some of the guys here would provide examples of countries where women are least materialistic.

"All" American girls may seem materialistic to a 30 y.o. guy with no job, car, degree, that lives in his parents basement and plays WOW 8 hours a day.

I like to make fun of fat American bitches on the forum, but for the materialistic side, or sense of entitlement, I don't see it nearly as bad as what gets reported.

If you wanna see it to extremes, go to Kuwait.

I'll second that. They do have some shitty qualities, but being materialistic is not one of them. Russian/EE women are much more materialistic.

However you're also right that all women look materialistic for a McDonald cashier.

Are you serious? I don't know where you're from, but everywhere outside of the general vicinity of DC (aside from all the fat black women in NE/SE) that I go it's absolutely full of fat pig women of all races. It may not be "100%" but we're definitely in the minority now. Maybe I misread what you wrote?

I ignore fat women. Their existence is completely inconsequential to me when I'm out swooping. I have ZERO problems picking up thin, attractive girls in the U.S. Never had an issue w/ this in SOCAL, south of I-10, or the East Coast. The 3 places I lived in the U.S. Sarasota, Atlanta, Athens, Charleston, and NYC are full of girls w/out the attitude.

I treat everyone w/ respect, and get it in return. You guys continue complainin', and I'll continue bangin'. [Image: banana.gif]

By saying "not superficial" I did not mean "not materialistic", but "not focussing on looks only".

If a man has achieved something in his life, if he is wealthy, has a well-payed respected job, I think women should value this. Men who earn much have usually worked hard for this. Pussy shall be a compensation.

And in the USA - just talking from my experience - social status, leadership (alpha) personality, money, confidence, intelligence, etc. still count for at least a certain demographic of women. For the more conservative, traditional, family-oriented women.

In countries like Sweden looks are everything. The consequence of economic/social success not being transverted into being attractive for women is a general lack of motivation to achieve something in life (for young males). Society as a whole suffers from this.

If you are a hard-working man with ambitions in your life, and you are looking for a physically attractive, traditional, family-value oriented woman with wife-quality, you will find this in a certain female demographic in the US. In parts of Western Europe, and especially in Northern Europe, this type of women is much more rare. Of course, you will find this type even more in Russia, parts of EE, and even - to some extend - still in some parts of Southern Europe (though in decline). But the USA is definitely not worse than Western Europe in this respect.
