It's a start, but if they want to get you, it's usually not enough. Even if you delete the stuff off your computer, it leaves behind fragments that can be pieced together to recreate the file. Besides that your activity can be tracked through your ISP. Moreover, even if you don't actually save anything on your computer, just visiting a page is enough to leave traces on your machine.

Not all child porn is instantly recognizable. Even if a girl is fully clothed, but is under 18, it could be ruled as cp depending on the intent of the photographer and the interpretation of the judge. Besides, just because a site says that a girl is 18 doesn't mean it's true. Even if you didn't know the girl was underage, you have still broken the law.

It's just that the more porn sites you go to, the more you risk being exposed to illegal content.

Very true. The definition of CP today is scary. Like really fucking scary.

Not only can you be prosecuted for it, you can be put in prison for decades over it. I met several people while I was in Federal Prison who were sentenced to 20+ years for CP. Not making it, mind you..just DOWNLOADING IT. There is no parole in the Federal System. Let me assure you, the harder type criminals in these facilities MAKE NO DISTINCTION between CP and child molestation. You look at little kids on the internet? You might as well have fucked their 5 year old. It's all the same in their book. Most these guys get pushed into Protective Custody in the higher security levels.

There are provisions under the CP statutes that provide exclusion on the basis of a person making an attempt to delete the content immediately after having received it inadvertently. Proving that the material was received inadvertently is another matter though.

In some countries, you can get into some DEEP SHIT for being caught with pornography in ANY form, even if it's all legal by Western 18+ standards.
Places like Saudi Arabia, for example. Or China.

Format/BCWipe that hard drive with Gutmann TWICE before you travel. Or get a new drive altogether.

I would never, ever travel across the borders with a laptop that does not have whole disk encryption. If the target country legally requires the encryption keys, then I would employ the hidden operating system feature in Truecrypt. No way I will give my computer and personal files up to anyone in any country...including the U.S.
