Operation Odessa

Ostensibly its about how 3 guys sold a Russian submarine to Pablo Escobar. Mostly its about how a couple of very alpha guys just kept doing things that were more and more audacious and didn negotiate the sale of a Russian sub to Escobar. Then one of them crossed the cartel, another turned State's evidence.

Really intersting to explore their attitudes and how big deals like this came about from very small seeds.

Finding Vivian Maier.

This is an academy award nominated documentary about. . .Vivian Maier. Never heard about her? Exactly. In fact, this talented street photographer's work came very close to ending up in a dustbin (literally so, and also the dustbin of history). The documentary sheds light on this secretive, eccentric, reclusive and probably deeply scarred soul. She spent most of her life as a child minder and house help, but this childless spinster also captured thousands of images, some of which are now changing the lexicon of the art. Unknown in her lifetime but so important after death, her work is filling a gap in history and pushing boundaries.

I liked the premise and decided to watch it. I was initially surprised by the low reviews on IMDB. "Well, Ringo, whatever, many movies you like have poor ratings", I thought to myself. Until I sat down and watched it...

Terrible, absolutely terrible. I don't even know where to begin.

His access to Amorth and the exorcism are incredible - I'll give him that.

The production value was low. As long as it's a good narrative, it's fine. Tons of Youtubers make amazing shit on a low budget.

Aesthetically, nothing matched. Some shots were good, others terrible (apparently he mixed pro camera, small DSLR/mirrorless camera, GoPro and iPhone footage). Composition and lighting were all over the place. In general it looks very antiquated.

The way Friedkin narrates it makes it look so much like a mystery TV show that at times I wondered if I was watching a real doc or a mockumentary. His interview style and his questions rubbed me the wrong way too. In my opinion the movie would have done better if he had less screen time.

In the beggining, why show all of that stuff about Georgetown? Could have made it much shorter.

The "experts" are a bunch of doctors, a bishop, a writer. I would have cut out all the doctors - they mostly shared the same views. They make a few claims but the film doesn't let it go deeper. The writer and the bishop were interesting, but lacked more context (especially the writer). Also, the band aids on one of the doctors' face were so distracting - yet they were never addressed!

The exorcism itself: nice images, but what's up with that voice? Friedkin swears he didn't use any effects on it.

I too was open-minded going into it, but whatever voice that is coming out of her during the exorcism — it’s too bizarre not to ask about.

In that same interview, Friedkin says he had no intention of making the film or distributing it. "I thought, “I’m doing this because I can with my own camera on my own nickel.” I didn’t know what I would ever do with it, if anything", he says. That's the only possible explanation for this trash.

The ending... bro... that ending... no words.

I posted this in another thread, I'll post in here as I really think this one is mandatory. It's called Money Masters: How international Bankers Gained Control of America which is by far the most comprehensive documentary I've watched on the banking system.

I learned more in 3 hours than in any of my economic class in college. It was made in 1996, yet very few people know about it. In my opinion, this should be mandatory for any high school graduate out there. A substantial amount of knowledge for free. It's long but worth every second of your time. I'd recommend watching it on several occasions, as you can be overwhelmed by the information.

Free Solo

I saw this documentary a month or so ago. It's about Alex Honnold, a free solo climber (climbing without a harness) who attempts to summit El Capitan, a 7,573 ft cliff. The documentary mostly focuses on the context of the attempted feat, the year of preparation in advance of the climb and his broader life: his personal history, his relationship with his mother, his relationship with his girlfriend, his relationship with other climbers, his mini-celebrity.

Suspenseful, inspirational, and well-produced.

Highly recommended.

Watched Free Solo last night. Incredible documentary. Even though you figure he's going to make it, it is still chilling to watch him going up some of the particularly daunting parts.

There's some really interesting dynamics in his relationship with his girlfriend as well. If you watch it, notice that not a single time does he apologize. I don't necessarily always believe in the "never apologize" mentality, but in his case, it makes perfect sense. He is living his life and she is an accessory in it, and he has no need to apologize for pursuing his passion. Great lesson in holding frame.

The best quote was from another climber in the movie when he describes Honnold's feat as "It is like competing for a gold medal in the Olympics, except if you don't win the gold, you die". I would argue it is the best athletic feat in the history of mankind.

Pretty much.

I've just finished watching the ten-part mini-series The Vietnam War, by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.



Absolutely mind blowing. I could not stop watching it despite the fact that each episode is around 90 minutes long.

Not only does this series depict Vietnam from before American intelligence services started their involvement in the country, it shows the political and cultural ramifications of the war in a way I had never seen before. I found myself shaking my head repeatedly in dismay as the story unfolded itself and all players dug themselves deeper and deeper into a hole.

The casting is amazing and there are so many moving testimonials from all sides. I was repeatedly brought on the verge of tears. Astounding archive footage and soundtrack as well. Highly recommended.
