Epic and insightful doc about the war between Egypt/Syria and Israel in 1973. This was the most prominent of the Arab-Israeli wars. Egypt and Syria conducted a joint surprise attack against Israel during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur when most soldiers were off-duty and at home. Israel still managed to win despite no major military support from the US (US military aid came after this war).

For those who wish to watch this (highly recommended):
This is probably the best sports documentary I've ever seen.
Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.

Anyone here into the folk/country Singer-Songwriter Townes Van Zandt?
There's a movie about his life called "Be Here To Love Me," and it's supposed to be fantastic.

First-time filmmaker Jamie Johnson, a 23-year-old heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune, captures the rituals, worries and social customs of the young Trumps, Vanderbilts, Newhouses and Bloombergs in the documentary special, Born Rich.
Offering candid insights into the privileges and burdens of inheriting more money than most people will earn in a lifetime. Narrated by Johnson, a history student at New York University, and filmed over a three-year period, Born Rich spotlights ten young adults who came into the world knowing they would never have to work a day in their lives.

This documentary about Russian organised crime and the wild times of the nineties is eye-opening:

My favourite documentary maker is Adam Curtis. He is a bit of legend here in the UK. He is the best thing about the BBC. And is a hero of mine.
My favourite work of his is also his most famous. Check out the Power Of Nightmares. It has a powerful beginning and should grab you within the first few minutes.
He also has an excellent blog:

The Up Series
This British documentary began in 1964. The series opened by interviewing 7 year olds from various economic backgrounds. Every seven years the participants were interviewed again.
It's a long series to watch in its entirety, so if you're short on time watch the first and last episodes. Newer episodes cut back to older ones, so you can still get an idea of the progression from children to young adults to middle age.
"The whole point of being alpha, is doing what the fuck you want.
That's why you see real life alphas without chicks. He's doing him.
Real alphas don't tend to have game. They don't tend to care about the emotional lives of the people around them."

WAITING FOR HOCKNEY is a very good documentary. It is about an artist who devotes 8 years of his life to drawing a small pencil portrait of Marilyn Monroe. Insane detail and perfectionism on a hard to grasp level.

PS THE WAR OF THE WORLD is a great series by Niall Ferguson. It details an interesting and different way of analysing the second world war.

I haven't seen this but it looks like it's worth checking out. A 21 yr old girl from Montreal went to LA to get into porn and contracted HIV after her first scene.

^ I saw that doc. The first scene involved a double penetration. It's a downer of a flick...worth a view but you can live without seeing it

DIG! is a good documentary. It follows two bands - as one becomes world famous (The Dandy Warhols) and the other remains an unfamous underground band.
