Is it true people have to sell their homes or get a second mortgage for big operations?
Definitely true, and extremely sad.
A contributing factor to the depression of a friend of mine, who ultimately committed suicide, was debt from a $10,000+ medical bill from an emergency room visit.
On the other hand, the actual doctors and facilities are great in general. As far as I've heard, it's not uncommon for Canadians to come down for certain procedures because they were facing extremely long wait times and they either wanted or needed it done sooner. That OK Surgery Center and the few similar facilities get a lot of those people because they cut out the insurance bloat, are doctor owned (have skin in the game), and post their prices online.
If local/state/federal governments and professional organization boards didn't block the development of the vast majority of these types of places then I think we'd see a revolution in the health care industry here (which is exactly why they don't approve the opening of them)

I just want to chime in, and say the dialogue that happened between Suits and Samseu is something out of 19th century gentlemen's club stuff.
Damn, how I would love to see this kind of stuff live.

I'm even hearing that if you don't have health insurance or a card on file in many US hospitals then they can deny you treatment.
Is this true or just BS?

You will always get treatment in our ER (Emergency Rooms) and never get turned away (especially if life threatening). However, you will get billed and be expected to pay it. Without insurance, it can be very expensive.
Other elective services require insurance or full self pay.
