Man, that was really embarrassing. What's even more embarrassing is that there are people in the comments actually defending Tariq. I read his book The Mack Within some time back and I liked it, but my opinion of him has completely changed after watching that video.
Tariq is obviously an intelligent guy and successful businessman, so something like this bears closer inspection because on the surface it seems out of character.
I watched it again, and thought about it a bit, and I have come to a different conclusion about what he was doing than my original impression.
He knew going in that Carlson was going to try to make him look bad. I have enjoyed many of Carlson's recent vids, but you have to admit he has been kind of going after nobodies to make his points, like that kid who wanted to burn the American Flag, or that dumb dude who was defending Castro.
Why of all people did he pick Nasheed? I know he is a successful author and Youtuber, but he doesn't seem like a serious target for a mainstream news show. Like when Carlson went after that Muslim Georgetown professor, that seemed like it made sense.
Going after Nasheed seemed closer to going after that college student or dopey Castro lover to me, like he was using an every day person who would be easy to dominate to make his points.
Nasheeds tweet didn't actually say anything inflammatory, it was all insinuation. Not that great a target really, unless Nasheed has a far bigger following than I think he does.
Watching it again, I realized that since Nasheed is smart enough to know why he is being interviewed, and how they plan to use him, so why go on the show?
What was his reason and his game plan?
I think he was trying to do the same thing to Carlson that Carlson was doing to him. I don't think he ever planned to get in any sort of reasonable debate at all.
He came on with the attitude of speaking truth to power to a closet white supremacist, and that is what he did, only he wasn't speaking to Carlson or his audience, he was using the appearance on the show to
speak directly to his own user base.
He was reaffirming his own views in a larger venue than his own, and sending out the message to all of his normal listeners that he wasn't going to clean it up, even on national media. He was going to charge straight ahead, admit nothing, and hit all of his usual talking points.
I don't think he could have cared less how he came across to the average guy on the street, or what people said in his Twitter feed.
He was sending out a secret message to his loyal followers, something that, because they have been listening to him a while, only
they could pick up on, signalling the fact that he was strong in his message, no matter what the venue, and no matter who he was talking to.
Not a hard and fast theory here, I am just trying to make sense of a puzzling event, and would be curious to hear what others think.
