Prince was also a vegan/vegetarian. A lot of musicians, actors and other accomplished artists are vegans. Is there a connection. Even Tony Robbins is a vegan.

Prince's war against the record labels starts in the early 90s, with Warner Bros. They'd been his publisher for most of his career. Where they first started to butt heads was because WB, by this stage being more of an accounting exercise than a body that actually produces anything, wanted to handbrake him: they wanted to hold him down to no more than 1 album released per year.

Remember the sort of guy Prince was. Not only was he amazingly gifted musically, he also just couldn't seem to shut the pipe off. David Z, his sound engineer, says that he and Prince would continually record two songs per day. Per day. That's not just put out two solos and a guitar riff and call it quits, that's a finished number, decks and drums and rock and roll, done in a maximum of 12 hours. The mighty Bosch can probably give a closer-to-accurate figure on this, but compare that rate of production with what it takes the average 3 minute pop song to get done: at least a full day if not more. Some reports indicate the Prince vault of unreleased music (and promo videos. And two full feature length films) is enough to put out a Prince album every year for the next 100 years. One of his sound engineers estimated there were 2,000 unreleased songs when she left in 1989. Leave aside that Prince also recorded every live gig he ever did, and therefore that there's live albums to the end of time to put out as well.

Put that sort of guy up against a corporation that wants to throttle his product in the very best Comcast or Verizon tradition, and you've got a fight on your hands.

“The music, for me, doesn’t come on a schedule,” Prince told the New Dork Times in 1996. “The main idea is not supposed to be, ‘How many different ways can we sell it?’ That’s so far away from the true spirit of what music is.”

And he took it to the PR circuit: this bullshit from WB was the reason he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol and took to writing the word "Slave" on his cheek during his concerts. It was a longrunning war to devalue himself with WB enough that they'd cut him loose. When he released his three-album Emancipation, it was via EMI under a deal that let him put out albums when he wished. Don't think that deal wasn't subject to a lot of corporate wars behind the scenes; Prince was out to destroy the music industry's marketing model of one cool album for the young sluts to buy from an artist per year, and he only succeeded at great cost to himself.

He fucked with Billboard's charting rules: he gave away copies of his Musicology album with concert tickets, which massively increased the number of discs moved. He made WB come crawling back to him in 2014, having regained copyright, recording, and control of distribution, an unheard-of trifecta of power for an artist to wrest off a recording company. Being a fucking smart guy, he also saw what the Internet was going to do to music prices and distribution as early as 2010, and that you simply weren't going to get paid as an artist in the era of youtube. (And his/WB's relentless war on youtube has been, well, mostly successful - it wasn't easy to find good copies of his music there before he died, in a similar way it wasn't easy to find e-books of Harlan Ellison's books online because he'd sue the fuck out of anyone who screwed with his copyright.)

Prince was basically doing experimental shit in distribution that other mainstream artists would only do nearly a decade later: dropping albums, leaking tracks online, etc, etc, that shit just wasn't done back when he was doing it. In his way he diluted -- a little -- the power of the record companies.
