Tommorow is the autopsy, the black rumor mill is advanced HIV leading to AIDS. The doctors around me say he did seem to have an AIDS defining illness like PCP Pneumonia. What puzzles me is if he did have HIV then HARRT would have kept him alive well until his late 60s early 70s, he should not be dead yet.

TMZ is now reporting that a few days ago Prince was hospitalized for a drug overdose, not the flu as originally reported.

From the article: "...doctors gave him a "save shot" ... typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate."

My totally non-scientific theory is that he was taking too many painkillers which became toxic. For years it's been said he needed double hip replacement surgery and/or he had one. Whether or not he had the operation done, he was probably in significant pain, and sought to dull it somehow. Just a wild guess.

Prince will go down as one of the greatest ever. Absolute madman legend. His sound wasn't for everyone but he was light years ahead of anything you hear on the radio today. Huge loss for the music world.

I always liked Bowie better than Prince, but Prince's passing leaves me sadder.

I'm showing my age, but "Purple Rain" might as well be the soundtrack to my senior year in high school. In a definitely good way.

The extended Purple Rain is one of the greatest songs of all time.
The movie kicked ass too.

Never understood the appeal of his music (MJ was way better IMO). He just seemed to lack something. Stage presence maybe? I dunno.

RIP regardless

I remember people joking about him banging most of his female band-mates/collaborators in the 80s and 90s...it turned out that most of it was true. He had impeccable taste in women.

Wasn't a long enough video of purple rain in this thread yet:

He was a massive talent. Wish I had been able to see him before he passed.

Also, another iconic song of my era. Written by Prince originally, but popularized by none other than Sinead O'Connor:

RIP player

While I'm on it, I notice a big correlation between musicians and substance abuse, mental illness, and early deaths.

Thinking Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson, and countless others - wonder why this is?

Don't think it's just the stress of being a "celebrity" because I don't hear about the same problems nearly as frequently with Hollywood actors or professional athletes (with the exception of steroid use) for example.

A theory i had was because of their musical/acting talent they were more intense and passionate than the rest of us. Music or performing in general was their outlet and they felt normal doing that compared to you or i sitting on the couch or reading a book.

Drugs/alcohol was a way for these people to "balance" themselves out when they couldn't be in their element.

RIP.

He was an amazing artist. The stories I heard were that he could basically lay down an entire track from drums to guitars without needing to hear the other parts, that he could just record them one at a time because he heard the entire song in his head.

So many good grooves, but I loved "Peach" -- a great bluesy summer song -- and half the 1989 Batman album. How can you not like this type of lyric:

You whispered something
It took my mind out
Like a G Flat major with an E in the bass
Your face looked so good
I wanted to touch your mouth
My brain is jacking
All over the place
O, if a man is considered guilty for what goes on in his mind
Then give me the electric chair for all my future crimes

Remissas, discite, vivet.
God save us from people who mean well. -storm

Like Chyna - another "accidental" overdose.

A doctor can always switch up your pain management regimen to avoid toxicity. I say the dude loved to get high and pushed it too far. In his legendary arrogance, he refused any help and paid the price. They're saying he left the hospital against doctor advice because they didn't have a private room ready.

Imagine you just needed a Narcan shot, then you leave to protect your privacy. That's not the act of a first timer. I'm guessing there are several ODs in his past.

They didn't have a private room for him? What would Sinatra have done?

"Mr. Sinatra needs his privacy. If you can get two patients who don't have roommates to double up with each other, tell them Mr. Sinatra will give them each $10K. And for your trouble, he'll make a $100,000 donation to this hospital on the spot."

Prince could have done this and a room would have been ready in ten minutes. Would you have refused ten grand to move a few rooms down the hall? I wouldn't have.

Since this scenario is clearly what didn't happen, something else must have been up and I think you're right. He was probably trying to hide a drug problem.

This makes sense. On his current tour, he just sits at the piano and sings -- no band.

Here is his first appearance on American Bandstand. He told Dick Clark that he turned down a record deal because they didn't want to let him produce his music:

Never followed him, even his most known songs.

All these emotion-seeking trolls coming out en-mass proclaiming their love for Prince on TV and at these mass wakes. I bet half these people couldn't name 10 of his top songs, with a third believing they knew him intimately because they heard his song as they were doing something emotional.

How can you cry for someone who never knew you existed and you were not involved with his life? In two weeks it will be "Prince who? Prince William? Oh he is HOT!"
