If you have access to them, eating a marijuana edible before a flight makes an otherwise miserable experience a surprisingly pleasant one.
Before a long ride, I will make a brownie and eat it right before I go through security. Then by the time I actually make it onto the plane, the high is starting to kick in full force. By the time the plane is airborne and at cruising altitude i'm blazed out of my mind eating the most amazing peanuts in the world, sitting in an amazingly comfortable chair, and giggling like an idiot at a rerun of family guy.
I always then get the urge to fall asleep in my seat which then takes me to roughly around the last 2 hours of the flight. This works astoundingly well for red eyes as it forces you to sleep. Don't drink alcohol, very bad idea. Flying and alcohol don't mix.

Figured out it takes me between 2 and 4 Unisoms before I pass out ...one time I accidently took 4 and started shaking but I passed out for a good 10 hours. Last night I took two and was good for 4 hours

Last summer I did a 10 hour flight from Bangkok to Istanbul, then a 6 hour layover in Istanbul then another 14 hour flight to Los Angeles. I partied hard in Bangkok the night before I left. I got a hot working girl to come to my hotel for free at like 8:00 am. Banged her for about an hour, slept for 2 hours then woke up and banged her pretty much non-stop from like 1100 am to 400 pm. After that I got some sushi and a Thai massage. I boarded my plane and slept 8 of the 10 hours to Istanbul. My friend in Istanbul picked me up, we had breakfast and went for a walk on the beach. Then I slept for 9 of the 14 hours from Istanbul to Los Angeles. I'm pretty sure I took some melatonin and an over the counter sleeping pill too.

I had an awful flight to Denver through a thunderstorm that messed up my tolerance of turbulence big time. After a few white knuckle flights, I found out about propanlol. It's a beta blocker and when taken an hour before the flight will simply not let you panic. It's been a miracle worker for me with bumpy flights and lasts 8 hours.
I also second loading an iPad up with a full season of a cable show. You'd be amazed how fast it will seem when you have 10 or so episodes to go through.

2mg of xanax and a beer on the plane = me knocked out for 12 hours.
Once I've took 6mg by mistake (xanax is a drug you'll take more if you are taking it without knowing it) and woke up in my hotel room with no recollection of how I got there.
My friends often take 1mg on a flight and they say they are out for a good 6-8 hours.

I've done many 24+ hour flights drug free. I can't really sleep on planes, I wish I could. I bring a large aloksak bag and inflate it like a pillow for lumbar support. I will try to relax as much as possible and close my eyes when it's nighttime in my final destination to adjust better, but that's about it.
To kill time, I usually start with activities that require focus and attention (reading books on phone or kindle), and progressively work my way towards more mindless time wasters. It usually goes: reading a book for a few hours -> reading downloaded RSS feed articles -> watching in flight movies -> watching good tv series on phone (Vikings, GOT, Breaking Bad etc) -> playing pokemon (yes, I have no shame) -> playing fresh install of candy crush/other King games.
After about 7 hours I start getting cabin fever, but it's somewhat tolerable now. I'm open to trying (legal) drugs, though the ones I've taken in the past just made me feel worse upon waking up. I force myself to push through jet lag until I'm on a reasonable schedule, but it can still take almost a week. I've found taking melatonin at the destination can get that down to a couple days.

^^^^Yeh i bought a Nintendo 3ds a while ago so I like playing mario/pokemon/zelda for a couple of hours.
I find that red eye flights going West are my best bet. Leave close to midnight and sleep through most of the flight. By the time I wake up its morning/early afternoon at whatever destination I am at.

In addition, Red eye flights also help with Jet lag, because you sleep through the flight you are fresh on arrival, like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

My routine for long flights in economy starts with ALWAYS getting a window seat on the left side of the plane if you are walking down the aisle (not the A window seat). I figured out a while ago that I can sleep a lot better and more comfortably on this side. I make sure to bring an extra sweatshirt I can wrap up, sometimes along with the pillows they give you, and make it so that my head has extra support against the window. I also got this inflatable neck pillow with a strap that connects the sides together so that your chin has support and your neck doesn't end up sore as hell. It looks like a damn neck brace but it's super comfortable. The neck pillow + the sweatshirt pillow against the window + earplugs + one of those sleep masks and I'm usually good for 8 hours at a time.
May sound a bit weird but I swear by this routine now. Recently did a 30 hour itinerary in economy from Cape Town to Bogota with a 16 hour flight from Dubai to Orlando and I slept for almost 10 hours on that flight.

iPad, Kindle, take shoes off, stretch your legs a bit. And hopefully doze out.

I did a shit load of UK to Asia travel for three years. My favorite route was getting the early morning flight to Schipol, which usually involves an 8 to 10 hour stopover. Its so easy to get to where you want to be in Amsterdam from the airport. I'd smoke some weed, eat some bomb food, wander around the city, smoke some more weed and then enjoy the long leg of the trip stoned out of my mind! I can't think of a better long stopover city than Amsterdam, nothing comes close in my opinion. It's almost like getting a free city break at the start of your trip. Even if I was living in a city with direct flights to Asia (I wasn't), I'd nearly still choose AMS over direct.

Booking seats at the very back of the plane where nobody wants to sit, and praying that I get 2 empty seats next to me so I can lay down and sleep. Booking a middle seat helps the cause because then only single travelers can kill your plan, but there's also a degree of risk because if the other two seats do get occupied (unlikely though), you're stuck in a middle seat.

I'm flying from China to Ukraine in a few weeks. I tried to book the flight yesterday but my lame US bank doesn't like my international playboy ways and I always have to verify with them that no one stole my debit card to buy tickets. Now I am wondering if I should go with a different flight, the one I tried to book yesterday was a 6ish hour flight with a 4 hour lay over and then a 5ish hour flight during the day. I found another flight for $200 more that is a 11 hour flight with a 2 hour lay over then 2 hour flight to Ukraine and its a night flight. However I can't really sleep on planes....Which flight do you experts think would be better? I'm gonna order my ticket tomorrow once my bank frees up my unstolen debit card.

I can not sleep in airplanes nor buses nor trains. I can not sleep at all when I am sitting in an upright position. So what I am doing on long flights is keeping myself busy with work or reading books. When I am traveling to a new country and the airline offers Wi-Fi I also use the time in the plane to research the country (RVF, other websites and guide books) and create my own word document where I summarize all the important information. Every 2-3 hours I take a break to watch a new episode of one of my favorite tv shows. I also make sure to always get the aisle seat (usually in the middle column at the back of the plane. Since I have been doing this I already had 3 flights where I had all four seats to myself) because it is easier to stretch your legs there and you can stand up and walk around every hour without pissing off the passengers next to you.
