This is a small clip although it doesn't quite capture the essence of it.
It looks like kick
boxing but with tradition.
I notice when they practice it looks like karate, when they actually spare, it looks like kick
boxing.
Looks legit

Fuck it's 2 am not sure if I should post this here, but tonight (Halloween) two black dudes tried to jump me, I'm kind of pissed at myself because I feel like my martial arts training didn't do much for me, but in my defense I got sucker punched pretty bad.
This is how it went down, a car with 4 buffed up black dudes pulls into the ally where there are food trucks. Two of the guys are talking shit, getting into each others' faces and shoving each other, I'm just a bystander in a group of people. I immediately recognize one of the guys who is a local MMA fighter who fights at casinos and trains at the other MMA gym in my town which is more cage fight oriented. The other guy I don't know but he looked like a huge jacked up body builder like 5 ft. 10 in. but 220 lbs of muscle.
So all of a sudden after the bodybuilder dude and the MMA guy are shoving each other, the bodybuilder straight up sucker punches some other black dude with a full on haymaker that appears to come out of no where and that guy gets straight knocked unconscious and falls and hits the ground like a sack of potatoes. It didn't look like he had anything to do with the conflict, so I said "damn that was a sucker punch if I've ever seen one", next thing I know the black dude rushes me from the side, swings a haymaker sucker punch that lands and hits me in the eye, then throws a flurry of punches.
I was totally caught off guard and never saw it coming all I could do was try to raise my hands up to cover my face, I was dressed up as the character Rayden from Mortal Combat and was wearing one of those big round Vietnamese farmer hats, which in the melee got pulled down and covered my eyes so I momentarily couldn't see.
All I knew was that I got hit hard and my eye was closing up and I had a roided out dude swinging at me, I regained my composure and field of vision and next thing I know his buddy the MMA guy who he was originally beefing with is throwing round house kicks at me, I back up and basically retreat then dip into the ally, and fortunately they didn't chase me.
I got hit so fast I didn't have time to react, but in a matter of seconds I realized my eye was fucked, but still had those thoughts that I've trained for this I can take this guy if I need to, but also thought of being in a public place with the potential for the cops to show at any second and arrest me without a thought. Once I realized that his MMA buddy was also attacking me, I knew there was no way in fuck I was going to fight both of them.
On top of that they had two other huge buffed up black dudes with them, one who looked thugged out as fuck with mad tats, the other I think may train and possibly even coach at the other MMA gym. Long story short I was thinking get the fuck out of there, if I was one on one I'd take the buffed up dude who sucker punched me, and maybe do alright against MMA guy, but there was no way I was going to try to fuck with two or more of them. Worst case scenario I could've had all 4 stomping me on the ground sending me to the hospital.
As it stands now I for sure am going to have a welted up black eye, and I thought I evaded all the round house kicks, but my right leg has a pretty nasty welt on it and the skin is broken and red so I think it's safe to say that one of those kicks landed.
It fucking sucks and while in reality my training probably did kick in, in so far as that I covered when getting punched and used my foot work to get out of there, but I feel like it wasn't enough. Then again, no matter how good you may be there is always the element of surprise and I for sure didn't see that punch coming.
I guess the take away for me is that in the future I should just shut up and not say a damn word or just get out of there and not be a spectator no matter how entertaining street fights can be to watch on a certain level. I also lost a shit ton of respect for that MMA guy and his gym that he trains at.
If the owners and instructors at my martial arts academy found out one of their students pulled that shit in the streets they'd be banned, the founder of the academy has told me that straight up, what he teaches is for self defense situations only and not to be used to attack people in the street.
That's one thing that I like better about traditional martial arts better they teach you that certain level of self control and respect for the art form and other people in general, some of these cage fighter guys are just animals who want to beat someone down regardless of circumstance.

Having two guys hitting you, one a body builder and the other a trained fighter, and getting away without falling down, I would say your training did help. For the average person, that probably would have gone alot worse. No shame retreating when you are outnumbered. You could have been killed or suffered much worse injuries, some people have no shame stomping out a downed person until he's out cold.

As has been said, it's not the movies, nothing is more dangerous to your long term health than bad decision making. Going against more than 1 guy when you have the option to leave is daft.
And as you found out, making smart comments when it isn't your rodeo is asking for trouble. Hopefully what it has given you is an appreciation for the sometimes random nature of violence, and how quickly things can go from queuing for a kebab to getting your head stomped on.
There are a few take-aways from this that it might reward sober reflection and pay dividends in the future:
1. If there's trouble going on, clear off or keep schtum. unless you decide you are honour-bound to step in to save someone. If you are going to fight, don't talk about it or get in a war of words, that's for amateurs. Dangerous people are generally quiet, because they are happy for you not to realise how dangerous they really are until you're lying on your back looking at stars. Also, there are stages of conflict escalation, the first usually being a flirting match between the participants telling each other how bad they are, when really they are trying to amp themselves up for a fight. Most people will do almost anything to escape conflict, are frightened and looking to scare you off by 'woofing' as Marc MacYoung would call it, without losing face, and consequently will give you every opportunity to avoid the uncertainties of physicality at this point. At the point you entered the fight, you weren't even in the woofing stage, whilst the guy you were up against was in the fighting stage. Doesn't matter what ninja skills you know at that point, you've set yourself up for a total mismatch, even if there's only one of them. Real violence and sport violence are very different things because of these facts, and many amateur fighters fall foul of them. Just as a 100lb chick with a blade instantly becomes a 10th dan ninja, a large adult male who is willing to throw first and do lasting harm to you, at the point you're still trying to be reasonable, suddenly becomes a much more formidable opponent. I'm sorry this happened to you, it sucks when your evening gets ruined like this, but the first thing you must do for your own sake is accept that this situation was entirely your own fault.
2. If you are a young man, don't ever go out on the piss wearing any kind of costume or clothing that impedes your ability to fight or flee - it really is incredibly naive. Your clothing should always allow you to perform optimally and not provide your opponent with any unnecessary advantages. This is not just the case for Halloween costumes. Things like hoodies that can easily be pulled over your head give your opponent a tremendous advantage, and if you're unlucky you'll be picking glass from an ashtray out of your teeth for weeks. Even if you're going to something in costume, be conscious of the trouble you might encounter over the course of the evening, and dress to survive that.

So, I had my regular Saturday sparring yesterday.
I was sparring together with one of the jiu-jiutsu black belts in my gym and obviously he had gotten irratated of me because I was pushing too hard. I'm well aware that I wouldn't have a chance against a guy like him but I like keeping the tempo high and push myself without trying to hurt myself or anyone else. Anyway, this guy lost it for a while and threw a few hard combinations and I got clicked with a clean kick to the right side of my head.
I became a little dizzy and my right ear got locked and I might have lost a bit of my hearing.
It feels I would have water splashing inside my ear.
Now is this something that will go away or should I have someone to take a look at it?

I don't know for sure, but for important things like hearing and such I would check them out asap.
Once you lose it you're fucked.

Must be careful about being hit on the side of the head, the most common injury is the perforated eardrum and the worst is the inner ear damage that can cause permanent situation
Quote:Quote:
Perforated Eardrum Symptoms:
Pain is the most common symptom of a perforated eardrum. It can range from general discomfort to immediate or intense pain, or the patient may just feel as if there is something not right with the ear.
Other common symptoms of perforated eardrum include:
Vertigo (spinning sensation)
Hearing change or loss
Often with ringing, buzzing, or clicking
Fluid or blood draining from the ear
Trauma can also cause perforation:
Blunt or penetrating trauma, such as from a fall on the side of your head or a stick that goes deep in your ear
Rapid changes in pressure, for example, scuba diving (barotrauma, ear pain, or ear squeeze), or going up in an elevator too fast
The eardrum can be ruptured in other ways:
Slaps to the ear, such as a fall while water skiing or a hand slap to the side of the head Lightning blasts
Blast waves from gunshots, fireworks, and other loud noises or explosions
Changes in air pressure during air travel or scuba diving
Sharp objects or cotton-tipped swabs
Motor vehicle accidents
Falls
Sports injuries
Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

Does anyone have experience with switching stances? i.e from southpaw to orthodox vice versa?

What exactly do you mean?
A right hander fighting southpaw (and vice versa) or just general training?

I believe the technique is termed "pivoting".
I.e you shift from southpaw stance to orthodox stance on purpose.
So if you're left handed you learn to fight right handed vice versa
Pivoting is where you plant one foot and push off the other to change angle. What you describe is called switch hitting (it may have other names, pivoting is not one of them). There are different schools of thought on it. My view is that that time is better spent being an excellent one stance fighter, rather than becoming mediocre at two.
I agree. Especially for
boxing.
It happens with more frequency in martial arts fighting, kick
boxing in particular.
Switch kicking by itself obviously happens in Muay Thai all the time.

I'm off to Brazil in a couple of weeks.
Anyone who can recommend a good BJJ gym in Rio where you can go as a beginner and without any Portuguese skills?

I had a guy finish an armbar on me despite tapping yesterday, we go fairly hard so I don't really think it was the intent. How long you guys reckon an elbow will take to heal before i can spar/lift again?
As things stand now, I'm icing this sucker for the next three days since I have a small holiday. I doubt there is much else I can do but does anyone have any suggestions?

^Switch hitting is what Fury fancies himself at. Here's Klitschko's thoughts on it, similar to H1N1's take on it:
Quote:Klitschko Wrote:
"I believe he is comfortable more on one side than the other, like all of us. We all have one sided we're more comfortable with. As soon as he gets hurt, he'll go back to basics. You can pretend like you're southpaw or regular but you will go back to basics as a survival instinct."

Being able to switch in boxing is only going to work for those that have trained that way since a very young age. Not many examples that can truly fight well both ways. Terrence Crawford is one of the only ones that comes to mind currently (see the Gamboa fight).

I need some advice for my upcoming trip to South East Asia.
I decided to stay mostly in Thailand and try some Muay Thai camps, but also want to try Pradal Serey(Cambodian kickboxing) and Myanmar Letwei or even Muay Lao. I have two months in the area so I need to plan it wisely and know the exact places for training in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar or even Vietnam.
