I want to start living a vegan lifestyle?

Is it hard for a kid to switch from an omnivore to a vegan lifestyle? I'm 13 and wanted to start eating healthier and save animals as well. What are some good dishes that are kid friendly and taste good? Any advice? Oh and how do I tell my parents that I want to make this transition when they love meat and dairy products.

Any advise would help a lot! What are your favorite dishes that taste good? How do you make a big transition gradually? Should I try to convince my friends and family to get into this kind of lifestyle?

At such a young age you may want to talk to a doctor before becoming vegan. You're at a point where you're growing fast and your body needs the building blocks to do this. Eating healthier is always a good thing, but your parents would need to be 100% on board with you to make sure they're buying all of the new foods that you'll need to be healthy as a vegan.

Keep in mind though that a lot of doctors give bad info about nutrition. It's not failproof but a rule that I follow is to listen only to doctors who look fit and healthy themselves.

1. Eating meat is very beneficial to your health especially if you eat good meat and avoid sugars and carbs. Here is an article that sums up my thoughts.

http://authoritynutrition.com/8-ridiculo...nd-health/

Our bodies were made to eat meat. We have enzymes that have grown over time to specifically break down meat molecules and use it as energy.

2. At 13 you should not be worried about dieting or saving animals. You should get off the internet, go play sports with your friends, and cause mischief in your neighborhood. This is a great time in your life that should not be wasted.

Good luck with that. I've made peace with the fact that every day, in order for me to live, something must die....

You are 13. You probably don't have a trust fund in access now and cannot buy and cook food yourself. You don't want to stunt your growth by a maladjusted vegan diet.

Personally I think that it is possible, but it takes significantly more knowledge and tinkering to get all essential nutrients.

You can cut down on meat and milk products and become fully vegan later in life when your body has stopped growing and you are better educated.

I found the website http://www.cronometer.com useful to establish the nutrient levels of your diet. It is an approximate tool, but quite helpful.

High quality protein is harder to find. You'll need to eat a very diverse range of foods to make up for the lack of B-vitamins. Cholesterol in animal fats is also needed for hormone production.

So, basically eat a diverse mix of mushrooms, plants, grains, seeds and some supplements like iron.

Also, keep in mind that us steak & egg eaters will be injecting our sweet animal protein into your future girlfriends when your diet leaves you unable to get it up.

Eating lots of vegetables is of course healthy.

Eating a lot of grains, which you will need to do if you're vegan, is not healthy. Your body converts them to sugar, and that extra sugar is just stored as far.

Many vegans I know are terribly overweight because they eat plenty of sweets, cupcakes, cookies, bread, pasta, etc. Potato chips are vegan. A bag of sugar is vegan. A coca-cola is vegan.

Eat a ton of vegetables, they are great for your health and well-being. Also eat meat, fish, etc.

If you want, try perhaps being a pescatarian, ie. eating fish but not meat/poultry. See how you like it.

For non-animal based protein sources, nuts are generally considered the best.

Zel brings up a good point.

I knew a bunch of girls in middle/high school who tried to go vegetarian "for the animals" [Image: tard.gif]

Their diets ended up consisting of granola bars, bread, peanut butter, cheese, and of course all of those processed junk veggie patties. They ended up eating absolute garbage! Extremely carb heavy and very processed. If you live an active lifestyle your body will make use of the food you eat ESPECIALLY if you're young.

Subtle trolling? I find it hard to believe that a 13 year olds first post on a forum that focuses on travelling and getting laid would be about becoming a vegan.

I call bullshit.

Have your dad grill you a steak because you are 13 years old. You are one person, your life choice to eat carrots all day will not prevent me or anyone else to throw a chicken in the oven.

As other people on this thread have said, do not force yourself to become malnourished. Your metabolism runs much faster than most of ours due to your age. Take advantage of it.

Fun fact, creatine is a vital component of mental functionality. Without it brain processing and learning drops. Where do you get creatine? From meat.... or supplements.

Two decent sites that might give some inspiration for recipes.

After reading Healthy at 100 and The China Study and realising how calorie dense animal proteins are, I made the decision to restrict my intake of dairy and meat, while still consuming Fish. So, you could call me a Pescetarian.

I would say that you shouldn't choose to be a vegan purely for the desire to stop animal suffering until you learn more about nutrition, otherwise nutritionally you will end up in a just as bad as a place as a red meat eater.

Nothing wrong with "calorie dense", which is meaningless. For example, I currently need around 2400 calories and 100-140 grams protein daily. Why exactly would "density" either help or hinder me meeting these nutritional requirements? I meet these requirements with meat, fish, eggs and cheese, but I guess I could also do it as a pescetarian. Choosing such a diet could only be for reasons other than "calorie density", however.
