MGTOW was a thing back in the 80s already:

If the singer looks familiar (probably not), it's Marco Hietala from Nightwish.

I've started learning guitar again recently, I'm in my 30s...last time I took it seriously I was 16. So I'm essentially a beginner again. It's incredibly satisfying, nostalgic, and fun. I'm currently learning songs that would make people in this thread cringe (Noel Gallagher songs, cough cough - but I do love 'em) ... but hopefully within a year or so I can start smashing out some Lamb of God.

Went to a Machine Head concert the other day, couldn't believe it that Burn My Eyes was released 25 years ago. They still have that ferocity on stage that make them essential despite that Robb Flynn turned 50 today.

Few songs can evoke the same crowd response as Davidian.

New five finger death punch album. Enjoying it so far, did not expect a cover of blue on black, but it works ok, and they've got a couple of cracking tunes on there.

I'm not sure if this is "heavy" enough, but Mastodon and Primus are touring together and I had the opportunity to see them within the last week. It was an epic fucking show. I've been a big fan of both bands for awhile, and have really been digging Mastodon as of late, so I was pretty excited.

I'm a very inexperienced concert-goer (have been to ~5 in my life) and was hoping to just sit back and enjoy some good music. Within 2 seconds of Mastodon starting their set, a huge mosh pit broke out right next to me. I got a little nervous and shied away from it at first, but by the time Primus was on stage, I was so fucking amped that I had to jump in. I never saw myself as a guy getting rowdy and moshing at a concert but there I was. I had so much god damned fun and it's an experience I hope I'll never forget. When Primus played "My Name is Mud" there was at least 50+ people getting buck-wild in the pit.

Being in a mosh pit like that was an eye-opening experience. The feeling of brotherhood in that thing is a feeling which I sadly haven't been able to find in other areas of my life. Everyone was looking out for each other, would stop what they were doing to help anyone that fell down, etc. For a moment I felt like I was part of a tribe. If anyone likes these bands try to get tickets to their show. Primus will be taking a hiatus after this tour.

Here's my favorite Mastodon track at the moment:

I like Animals as Leaders, but I think that the project sometimes tries for too much and falls a little flat. Tosin is quite the guitarist, though. He will probably be one of the greatest guitarists out there if he manages to avoid the usual pitfalls that kill virtuosos: shitty management, lazy record labels, debt, drugs, alcohol or divorce rape.

I have a friend who is close with some people in that circle, so I often hear a lot of the metal gossip. Ha. Not much dirt on Tosin that strikes me particularly believable. Apparently, he has a big ego, but I don't see that as much of a character fault. I'm not paying him to be nice to me. I just want him to shred like an animal.

I can confirm Tosin is a dueche. Met him at the NAMM show around 2011 or 2012. This was before their second album came out.

I was walking and saw him and Javier the (bassist?) other guy in the band and said "Hey animals! big fan!" Tosin wouldn't even turn around to see who I was. Javier did turn around and shake my hand and apologized for Tosin being a fag.

I stopped listening around that time because

-The second album sucked
-Tosin is an unlikeable cunt

Honestly even their first album, despite having some good tunes, found me skipping large passages of their songs to get to the parts I liked. Soraya was a good song, so was On Impulse. But i got over that wankery style prog shit long ago.

Geniuses tend to be douchebags. Still funny story though. If I saw him at a grocery store I don't think I would have even said hello to him and I am a huge fan with two albums.

Speaking of Michael Jordan, Victor Wooten has a don't touch me vibe too. I would maybe wave and nod at him if I saw him somewhere, nothing else.

Now if I saw Thomas Erak or Tim the bassist at the store, it would take everything in me to not jump on his back and hug the hell out of him. Even if he got pissed off, I still would not care. I love him too much to care.

If we're on the subject of 'don't touch me' musicians none can top Brett Michaels from Poison. Shit band, shit singer, even shittier person.

You're not allowed to look at him before going onstage. He actually makes security clear the hallways before he walks through, so I've heard.

He also gave an interview a couple of years ago on "how to properly trash a hotel room". At age 50 something. Grow up, dude. Trashing hotel rooms hasn't been cool since the Led Zepplin days for Chrissake.

Personally, I didn't like Animals... until they put out "joy of motion" that was their peak for me. Everything before and after that is weak. The latest Animals.... album is a huge disappointment. Nigga went soft like Drake.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

I haven't heard anything from them in years but it doesn't surprise me at all to hear that.

You can only play 9 minute progressive metal instrumental shit for so long before I imagine it gets as boring to play as it is to listen to.

These days, I am far more appreciative of good songwriting above all else. Instrument mastery as a pursuit in and of itself is missing the bigger picture. At least that's my opinion.

...I'm not sure if Sabaton has been posted yet. They're a power metal band that mainly glorifies epic historical battles and acts of heroism. It's about as masculine as it gets.

Zona, your post turned me on to Sabaton a while ago. I just bought my tickets to fly to Sweden for Sabaton Open Air. Thanks man!

I can't wait to hear "Shiroyama", "Resist and Bite", and "No Bullets Fly". The stories behind these songs are so cool.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Shiroyama

"The story of the Chasseurs Ardennais, whose emblem is the wild boar. A small Belgian unit of soldiers who were supposed to defend the borders and hold their ground along the K-W Line in May 1940. When the German armies, which included Rommel’s Ghost Division, approached the unit, they were supposed to retreat but due to communication failure the order never reached them. Instead they honoured their original orders, which were to defend the border at all cost. They fought so bravely and on such a large front, that they tricked the axis into believing that they were facing a force much larger than 40 rifles strong. When finally they were captured and their captors asked them -”where are the others?” they simply laughed and answered. -”There are no others, we are all!”.
The song gets its title from their motto Resiste Et Mords, in English, Resist and Bite."

"Okay (and I'm laughing now, because this is so funny), so we're A) not supposed to give you flowers, B) pay you compliments, or C) look at you. Anything else? Because I'm struggling to figure out the reason why after hearing that, I'm feeling like I'd rather get fucked in the ass by a Cape Buffalo than ever have to sit through dinner with you. Maybe you can figure it out for me. When you do, let me know. I'll be at Natasha's house."
