This song, on the surface, is about a guy who falls off his bike and has trouble getting medical treatment in an ill-equipped hospital in the Dominican Republic. The title and chorus is a play on a Dominican idiom, literally meaning "it's difficult to get through Niagara Falls on a bicycle." Of course, it's a metaphor for overcoming difficult situations, especially when you're not prepared enough to do so.
But it reaches me on many levels.
1. I heard it often as a kid, it was a popular song. I distinctly remember it playing in my grandfather's cab going home from elementary school, as I ate McDonald's chicken nuggets in the back seat.
2. The 'heavy' lyrics combined with the happy, danceable music is an interesting contrast. It shows how people, especially from tropical environments, can simultaneously be supremely frustrated, yet just not give a fuck and be happy. It encapsulates us, and our situations, well.
3. You know how you get 3 great women in life? For one of mine, this guy is her favorite artist.
4. It's the fucking story of my life. Always behind, trying to find the tools to get me over those goddamn falls.
