Owning and running a club is a whole lot of headache.
However, being an organizer of parties for that club is a very lucrative thing. I have a buddy who started out doing just that, organizing a certain party even for a high-end club once a month. Pros: HE is easily recognizable as the promoter of that event. People just generally go to random clubs because they may like the music in general, but if people know what a certain party or a certain event is about and they like it, you're creating brand recognition. Suddenly, when that event is taking place, people might change their place from "let's just generally go partying" to "let's go to Event X!". Another positive thing is then that people start following that event around wherever it goes, and it doesn't need to rely on a certain club. Events are also easily scaleable, you're not tied up to a certain club, a certain rhytm or even a certain town. Easily expandeable in a way that having to open up a whole new club isn't. Also, once one event is established, you can create other new contrasting events and use the whole "From the creators of Event X!" thing.
Also the sheer (business) contacts you get as a promoter compared to a simply club owner are ridiculous.
