It's an odd habit. Biting is a lot more convenient than clipping. Probably some sort of OCD habit. Call me weird, but it tastes good and I hate nails. Even finger nails on people who don't bite their nails.

I managed to go through all of lent last year without biting, just to relapse after lent

This year i'm giving up marijuana.

Nail biting is the most common 'nervous habit' there is.

I bit my nails my entire life up until 2010 when I decided to give it up cold turkey for new years. Have only had a couple episodes where I bit them all off since.

I think it stemmed from my father who always bit his nails. My younger brother does it too, he completely bites them to the bare bone, it's pretty disgusting.
