Jeremy Renner is gay, or at the very least bi-sexual. And I do believe that half of Hollywood is gay. Think back to the drama class in high school. What percentage of boys were 100% straight there?. Not that many, no more than 30%. Now extrapolate that to an industry.

There are businesses that have critical mass of certain types of people, for whatever reason, and industries like Hollywood, hairdressing, fashion and other looks-based industries have a very high proportion of homosexuals in them.

Hollywood establishment like David Geffen, Scott Rudin, Bryan Singer and so many others are gay and the presence of the casting couch is applicable to both male and female wannabe actors...yet despite that presence of gay power-brokers, the entire industry is vested in ensuring that leading men don't have a whiff of gayness about them. Why?. Fantasy.

Hollywood is in the business of selling fantasies. Recall Athlone's great article on why famous men are outspoken feminists...this key passage also applies as to why actors, especially those who aspire to leading men status, do not openly come out of the closet:

"These female fanbases consist of young (usually anywhere from 12-25) women who are, more often than not, quite insecure. Their fandom is often based heavily on the maintenance of a mental “relationship” with the celebrity: they may never date him, but they like to maintain the fantasy that they could someday and often place themselves in that position in their own hearts and minds. Athlone applied this to women under 25, but extrapolate that to all women.

Even though now in the age of the Internet, big cracks are appearing where stars' true orientation is concerned, you will still have guys like Tom Cruise, John Travolta, George Clooney, Hugh Jackman and so many other leading type men vociferously deny, deny, deny any hint of gayness cause that would kill their careers dead.

Being a poof is definitely the kiss of death for leading man roles. Anyone remember Rupert Everett? He was all set to become the "it" man in the mainstream and then the gay media bomb dropped and he started getting put into secondary or relegated to minor co-star roles. I was trying to remember the actor whose rise to stardom was derailed after it was confirmed he was gay but I couldn't remember his name until now. Yeah, Rupert Everett's career trajectory was a big cautionary tale for other actors as he slid off the leading man path after he came out.

It seems to me that Renner's two greatest roles (The Town and American Hustle) would not have been impeded if he was out of the closet. But yes, of course, he could not get the big leading man roles. Who cares? He was absolutely the best thing in both those movies by far. He can still make huge bank, and retain the quality of his work. Guys like Gary Oldman and Brian Cox are not leading men, yet still the best of the best actors, constantly getting the most interesting roles in movies.

The salary difference between leading man (Renner in Bourne) and smaller character actor roles is huge. Why burn your career progression if you don't have to?

The only thing outing yourself serves is the gay political agenda. Some of them are wisely not too keen in joining in on that crusade unless their career is on the decline then it becomes rational to branch out into that demographic.

That is more like it. The pro bodybuilders tell of that too - they get massive offers from gays and many guys are sucking dick on the side, since their gear costs six-digits a year.

To make it in Hollywood without connections and NOT SUCKING someone's dick is the exception. But for some that makes them not gay - they are just lacking any scruples.
