Seems a bit strange the Australian federal government has chosen this moment to drop this news:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-15/bu...on/5967956

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/...on-2014-15

Only up a cheeky 10 billion.

Thoughts?

No real options in Australia anyway. Both labor and liberal suck. What do you think Tony Abbott could have done better to resolve the debt situation?

Another conversation for another thread.
What I was alluding to was the timing of the budget news breaking in reference to current events in Martin Place. As it literally just broke, within the last half hour.

MYEFO was always supposed to come out today. So not only do we have a terrorist attack on, but it's dominating the news instead of the budget deficit blowing out by $10 billion. The Coalition has been polling at 45% lately, so talk about an early Christmas gift for the Right. The Treasurer Joe Hockey's father is from Palestine, hmmm perhaps this is all a well-timed false flag conspiracy to boost the Coalition's poll numbers [Image: tongue.gif]

My guess is that the police are worried about the guy being strapped with explosives (he is wearing a backpack). Otherwise knowing it's one guy they likely would have taken a shot already.

If he is in fact strapped it's a much dicier situation. If not, chances are good it will be solved one way or another. We'll see.

In other news, my boss just called me and I don't have to come into work tonight. Apparently lots of dinner cancellations in the wake of this event.

Australia already has restricted gun control laws, is very hard to get a gun there, I think they could put some sort of "patriot act" bill, Australia has the advantage that is a island unlike most Europe or USA.

The current government already increased surveillance powers and passed anti-whistleblower laws a few months ago when ISIS was first making waves.

OP is simply suggesting here that some Muslim gunmen holding hostages in Australia is a result of multiculturalism. If the terrorists turn out to have been born and raised in Australia, his suspicion will be proved right. If the terrorists turn out to have come to Australia illegaly and then somehow granted citizenship or residence permit, his suspicions will be proved right. If there is any way this could have been prevented by more strict border regulations, his suspicions will be proved right. The only way for him to be wrong is that the terrorists sneaked into Australia to do this, kind of like 9/11, in which case it will be just foreign policies that should be blamed. Are we seriously sitting here discussing whether or not multiculturalism is good for Western countries and their safety?

If I had 1000 posts it wouldn't have even come up in conversation. Seems like members are more interested in labelling people trolls than actually adding to the conversation.

Bro, I labeled you a troll based on your comment history.

Giving advice on 2000 trips, when airfare to nepal is pretty much that. The trek is 3000-6000 itself.

Then you wrote "hooray for multiculturalism" at a start of a thread. You expressed your opinion, then refused to explain yourself when asked. Why start something if you're not going to stick with it? That sir, is called trolling.

And what you are doing is called baiting. Hoping he expands on what he said and get the new guy banned because he can't get into race/culture talk.

Three hostages just escaped the cafe

The police say the gunman actually hadn't even spoken to the police until just now or made any demands even though he's been holed up in there for six hours.

This all makes for a good drinking game. Anytime there's a Muslim terrorist or hostage situation, drink a beer or take a shot anytime someone says "But Islam is the religion of peace!"

The terrorist claims he’s planted two bombs in the store and two more bombs in other locations around Sydney.

I think it’s been mentioned already, he’s demanding to speak to our Prime Minister, which I don't think will happen.

To the guys trying to egg on the OP, cut it out. You know he's right. You are just being political correctness trolls trying to get him banned. I understand race and culture topics are controversial.

However, the OP is right. When we in western civilization open our borders to the entire world without discriminating against who we let in, then we shouldn't be surprised when we let in people who are hostile to our way of life. This is what multicultural immigration policies have done. They have turned our homelands into battle fields. 9/11? The London bombings? The London beheading? Rotherham? The Ottawa shootings? Fort hood? Literally dozens of incidents throughout all of Europe? Now this. We invited all those people to live in our societies with our multicultural immigration policies.

The gunman is making demands via the Facebook accounts of the hostages. He's said he'll trade 1 hostage for an ISIS flag, 5 hostages to speak to Tony Abbott (Australia's conservative Prime Minister) and a third demand the press won't release.

A report I dread said they're not sure he's actually ISIS. The flag he held was just a shahada (religious message) that has been linked with al-Qaeda affiliates.
