If any of you guys know who he is, (Maybe the Hispanic posters know) he was considered the "mini shakespeare" of his time, admired all throughout Latin America and in the world.

Born in Mexico in 1929, Roberto Gomez Bolanos or better known as "Chespirito" was an actor, comedian, playwrighter, writer, screenwriter, composer, director and producer of Mexican television. He was the creator and performer of El Chavo del Ocho and El Chapulin Colorado, among others.

Funny because when I went down to South America (Argentina/Brazil) and mentioned I was Mexican, they referenced Chespirito everywhere I went, same in Cuba and showed their love for "El Chavo". I gamed girls in Argentina using Chespirito renferences.

^^^Which was an inspiration for this character from the Simpsons

I grew up watching this shit and watching it with family and grandparents. It brings back nostalgia watching the re-runs on TV.

Just wanted to make a thread on this news because his shows have helped my game when it came to Spanish humor, similar to how Sienfield is good when learning humor for game. A learned a lot from watching this shows and recommed it for those guys who needs to brush up on their Spanish and learn Spanish humor for game.

True legend and may he rest in peace.

Yes, when I visited Brazil the first time I was surprised to find that people loved the TV Show 'El Chavo del 8' as much as Mexican audience did; and how it was a good way to start a conversation with locals, even to start flirting with girls. Same thing for other countries like Chile, Argentina, Peru, etc. Although he created several characters and sketches, his main product was 'El Chavo del 8' (the Little Boy at #8). A collection of stories about the misadventures of an orphaned little boy who lives in a 'vecindad', the typical neighborhood of Mexico City where a number of poor, small houses (usually for rent) are conected by a central yard. This dramatic context and the simplicity of the stories made the show a hit from the very beginning (late 60s, I guess) and for 40 years.

With God's help, I'll conquer this terrible affliction.

Yeah bro, in Argentina I was like "WTF?" Chicks knew about "El Chavo". I knew it was popular in Mexico and somewhat with American Latinos but I never would have thought that in other Latin American countries it was watched as well. It changed my perspective all together.

As a Mexican the shock comes from the fact that in the 70s and 80s, 'El Chavo' was a program despised by Mexican Intelligentsia; that is writers, political commentators and others always acussed the program, but also the producer, Televisa, of giving this kind of trash to people; and so, contributing to the sorry ass condition of population -A kind of opium for the poor.
Second. The program is supossed to reflect Mexican idiosyncrasy, so you don't believe, for instance, that Argentinians (who are supossed to be more European, educated and politicized than Mexicans) would even watch the program, forget about love it.
However, I guess the show worked because at the end of the day the Mexican dramatic context (poverty with an optimistic hope, ignorance with a life of happiness) is the same in all countries of Latin America.
The other thing that impressed me the first time I visited Brazil is how Brazilians, also older people, are grateful with Mexico for the Soccer tittle got by Brazil in the '70 World Cup. They think they owe us something!
WTF!

Ah, el Chavo del Ocho! I grew up with that series, and all of Bolaños`s characters. I love the Dr. Chapatin and "es que me da cosa". RIP.

That was a great interview, you can tell he was a very funny guy and very charismatic. I think at the same time he did a skit with a famous Argentinian comedian at the time "Minguito" along with the cast of El Chavo.

A true legend, who transcended Latin American and Hispanophone culture. I've met people all over the world who have seen his shows, from the US, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Spain... He will be missed.

El Chavo was (and still is) really big in Argentina.

Latin America is a whole "continent" divided by many reasons. It's divided by language, by ancestry, by history, politics, fear, hate, wars and blood. However, there is only two things in the world that united these countries and was common in each single one of them: The church and Chespirito. May he rest in peace.

Looks like they will do his vigil in the Azteca Stadium. They are expecting a lot of people.
