Can't dress for shit. Starting college soon and clueless in fashion.

I'll be starting some sort of college course soon but my main problem right now is I don't know what the fuck I should be wearing. Whenever I'm in a clothes shop(not often) I just have no idea about what matches/clashes. I just don't have enough experience in this field.

Now I know that after doing this regularly I should know what to buy but I'm not at that stage yet and school starts soon, September or October. I'm about 6ft weigh probably 155lbs. Broad shoulders and thick thighs, infact when I weighed 200lbs I had trouble buying trousers because my thigh muscles were too big.

I plan on gaming as soon as I hit college, don't wanna give out bad first impressions, wanna have my shit locked down tight before I go in. I have my mental plan, nice clothes, nice haircut and facial hair under control, I'm just having trouble with the first part.

My brother recommended I go with a girl to buy clothes, claims it works for him, any advice there?

Thanks

We have a beginners guide on male fashion here: http://www.rooshvforum.network/thread-36072.html

Read through that and you should be good-to-go.

There are loads of resources here and online in general about building a fashionable wardrobe with plenty of interchangeable pieces.

You don't need to spend 1000s to look good.

You could even try Thread.com I think…you upload a picture and they send you loads of "looks"…obviously they want you to buy through them but you don't have to and it can give you some ideas/inspiration. (this may only be a Uk site though).

Spend a few hours looking at Male Fashion websites/blogs and get a feel for the type of style you want.

Or just go classic and purchase some colourful accessories (shoes, belts, scarves etc) if you're really stuck.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is that your clothes fit well.

The beginners guide to fashion will show you how to fit your clothes and give you some good suggestions on what to wear typically. If you going to a big university facebook some of the frats in your area see what they wear. Typically polo shirts nice jeans and boat shoes is pretty standard college, but it depends on where you live and you might want to put your own taste into whatever the frats wear. I shop at TJmaxx i find lots of polo and calvin klein clothes I wear a lot and usually never pay over $20 for a t-shirt, even button ups. Usually my rule of thumb for matching is if I can match the color in my shoes to my shirt I will. Also if I am wearing dark jeans I will always wear a light shirt, and vice versa if I am wearing light jeans/shorts. There are tons of forums on what to wear use that search button and you can find lots of advice on what to wear, but don't buy clothes just because someone said they look good, if you don't like it you won't wear it anyway.

Try styleforum.net and search there. That place is loaded with info and I am sure plenty of similar threads. Welcome to the board!

All I can say is this:
1) Buy quality - save for good items that last
2) Make sure it fits well - no name brands that fit great better than brands that make you look sloppy.

Personally i dress kind of skater/urban and i pull college aged girls like crazy. The polo/prep look also works i wouldnt dress up too preppy tho.

I think the style threads on here are for older people.

Work on your game, not your clothes.

I don't agree with this. Wardrobe is part of your vibe, so it's part of your game.

If you mean to say don't fuck around trying to impress chicks with overpriced designer labels, then sure, but clothes really do make the man, or at least open a girl's mind to seeing you as a certain type of man.

Yeah - don't do it. I repeat, DON'T go shopping with a chick, unless you _really_ know how to buy your own clothes (which you just admitted you don't) and thus she's just a ridealong. Shopping with a girl is a way to get friendzoned anyway.

Don't take dating advice from women and don't take clothing advice either. The Masculine Style guy put it well - he said that women dress a man to look "pretty" but not masculine, so he fits an aesthetic but not the correct one.

The only "advice" you should be taking is the opinions of women you are gaming, IOW hearing them say "ooh, that looks really good on you," preferably a few minutes/hours before getting sexual with you.

dudes suggest that you read online about it. but I guess that's for guys that knows their stuff and want to improve. I'd suggest that you ask (or find) a friend that knows what/how to wear and go with him to do some shopping. you'll get direct advice and critics from him and probably less confusion and incertainty. most of the time it's about how much confident you are about the clothes rather than if they do actually look good.

don't wear cargo shorts, don't wear ripped jeans. Figure out if you want the sharp, preppy frat look, party animal frat look, rugged hipster, or bad boy college. Go from there. style forum is just like roosh, loads of information but you will have to sift between good and bad.

for preppy/conservative:
polo ralph lauren (rl) (NOT the same as us. polo association), brooks brothers (bb), vineyard vines with jeans (levis) or khaki shorts (have like 3 pairs of them) straight shorts, no extra pockets. volcom, quicksilver, billabong, and other surf shops will sell. you could also get them from rl or bb but bit shorter which I was never comfy with.

Have a couple button down shirts, roll up the sleeves when you go out. these don't need the logo, always make sure they are long sleeves - but roll the sleeves, don't buy short sleeve shirts.

Have 1 blue blazer, and 1 suit for interviews and networking events (NOT black, get a blue or charcoal grey)

"most of the time it's about how much confident you are about the clothes rather than if they do actually look good. "

Put another way, your clothes have to be congruent with your vibe, personality and environment.

"Figure out if you want the sharp, preppy frat look, party animal frat look, rugged hipster, or bad boy college. Go from there."

Go from there => get clothes _that fit you_, literally - baggy or too-tight shit looks like your mother dressed you. Spring for a tailoring on stuff that doesn't fit off the rack, it is cheap compared to the base price of the clothes and really pays off. Even if you aren't in top shape, having clothes that fit on your body makes you look a lot better.

Hey guys, just saw a link to my style guide on here, thank civpro, glad you got some value out of it. For casual well fitting jeans and a tshirt has served me really well. The new fitted t's at h&m are really good, they're v neck with just a bit of stretch but not so much that you look questionable. One thing I find is really important is getting t shirts where the sleeves look right, big floppy holes is not a good look, if you're a really skinny guy getting the sleeves tailored is a good option (no one can tell).
