If you have netflix did you get rid of cable and comcast on demand?

I got rid of comcast/xfinity/ondemand/whateveryoucallit last month and now just have a $40 internet bill. HboGo and netflix are all I need in terms of TV, if I want to watch the local news its live streamed. Comcast can go fuck themselves, trying to charge close to $200 for basic cable, internet and phone.

I've been binge watching breakingbad for a week, so far almost to season 3, its awesome. Thanks to all the suggestions here I've loaded up my list, also found these cocaine cowboys documentaries that look interesting.

Watched virunga the other day on netflix, a real heartwarming and shocking documentary about the last mountain gorillas living in a national park in Congo, war in the country and a british oil company taking advantage of the situation. recommended!

Quick note about a brief series I just watched the past couple days:

Dark Secrets

This is a curious Netflix series. It's a fictional show that has an unnamed and anonymous narrator -- with a voice and presence like that of Robert Stack of Unsolved Mysteries -- describe various fictional mysteries, such as an alleged flesh-eating zombie terrorizing a Central American village and a haunted St. Louis apartment. It proceeds like an Unsolved Mysteries episode, with witnesses brought to bear, experts brought in to debate and an overarching theory presented of why the triggering event happened. While the show definitely toys around between the worlds of the real and the fantastical, the show never devolves into pure fantasy or sci/fi.

It does sound weird, as who would be moved to watch a TV series about fictional mysteries? The show does manage to pull it off -- not magnificently, but well enough to justify watching the series. For example, the aforementioned episode about the zombie was interesting and fairly amusing, especially for the alleged US government involvement in producing zombies in CA. Also, there is an episode with a Vietnam veteran with PTSD that has a Stephen King-like twist at the end.

In all, it is a satisfying show. I am disappointed there is only one season with 8 episodes, but it is worth a viewing and certainly has a ton of potential -- it could just use some writers with more creativity. I still definitely recommend you give the show a try.

As I am Canadian, our NetFlix, while decent, is severely lacking compared to the U.S. or even UK versions. I recently cancelled my cable service, got an Apple TV and set myself up with NetFlix. I highly recommend anyone in Canada (or anyone looking to expand their viewing options) to set up a VPN service. The one I use is $4.99 a month plus the NetFlix subscription. It's easy to set up and I can quickly switch my region to the U.S. or UK or anywhere else to access their Netflix library (UK is adding Better Call Saul episodes right after they air).

Also, checked out Black Mirror due to recommendations here. Amazing show. The 'White Bear' episode in particular, didn't see that twist coming.

How do you get the Apple TV to work with the VPN?

The site I use is http://unblock-us.com. They have tutorials on getting it set up on every device one could think of, including smart phones, game consoles and Apple TV. They also have a one week free trial and following that it's the $4.99 a month. It's basically just signing up with your e-mail, following the instructions to change the DNS in your wifi settings on the Apple TV, and then it's a simple matter of selecting which country you want to browse from using a drop down menu on the website. This will allow you to access Netflix from any country.

I went a step further and set up a mock US based Apple ID which changes the whole interface giving you access to apps not normally available in Canada (Hulu Plus, HBO Go, WWE Network, etc). Again, there is tutorials available on there for this if it interests you.

If you are just changing the DNS servers you aren't using a VPN but it does the trick anyway.

Ah forgive me. My friends always mentioned to me using a VPN to access the American Netflix. Then one of them pointed me towards that unblock-us site.

I'm not overly savvy with things like this, hence why I took full use of the tutorials on the site

When I exhaust everything in my Netflix que I'll often hit hte documentary section, I enjoy some really off the wall stupid documentaries. A few that come to mind are "Shutup Little man" and "I think were alone now".

My favorite shows however would be series such as...

The Americans
Hell On Wheels
Peaky Binder
Marco Polo
LillyHammer

If you have Amazon prime you also have access to all their shows osme of which are not on Netflix. Amazon has the Americans, Justified, and every HBo series such as Deadwood, Sopranos, Band of Brothers.

Very well-written slow burner; Ben Mendelsohn is terrific as the black sheep son who returns to his family and slowly manipulates everyone around him to act in ways they did not imagine.

I recommend attack on titan for anime fans. Apocalyptic anime where humans are struggling to survive, lots of political subplots going on in the background. Only issue with the show is that the 2nd season isn't due until 2016.

Is the Americans good? I just started watching House of Cards its worth watching from what I have seen so far.

I got bogged down in House of Cards. Season 3 started to get really slow. I think I have two episodes left, and I'm not in a hurry to finish them. It started out real good, but got slow. It's the same problem I have with Mad Men. They spend too long caught up in boring drama.

I've been watching my way through the CSI shows, Miami and now New York. CSI doesn't seem to suffer as much from liberal commentary as some of the other shows. They just try to tell a story and not preach about guns. For those who like cop shows, Blue Bloods is pretty good too. Tom Selleck is the NYC police commissioner, and his family is also involved in the PD and DA office. I hope a 5th season makes it to Netflix.

Finally made the plunge and signed up for Netflix. I've decided since I'll be in the U.S. for awhile longer it's time to upgrade the amenities. There's a handful of shows like Breaking Bad, SOA, Justified, and Archer that I've at best seen 1 season. Hell, I've missed most movies in the last 2-3 years. One of those upgrades mentioned was getting a 50" LED. That tv is so big it makes me want to watch it.

Sad part is I signed up for Netflix last night late, and there were so many options, I got brain freeze, turned it off, and went to bed.

I'll be keeping up with this thread for suggestions. Keep'em coming!
