The concentration camp pic was disrespectful but nothing I really raised an eyebrow over. The pics of the dead grandmas however... JESUS FUCKING CHRIST how on earth can you do that to your own flesh and blood?

Nothing is sacred anymore. Part of the millennial mindset is that life is a huge party and everyone always cares about what you're doing. As I said in another thread, the more you post on Instagram or Facebook, the less interesting your life actually is.

My grandfather was part of the unit that liberated the camps he told me that he would never tell anyone the things he saw there. Her pic is disrespectful to the people who suffered there.

Just run-of-the-mill American youth narcissism. I expect no less. This is just what kids do these days. Taking picture of themselves 24/7 because they can't just enjoy being somewhere an experiencing something independently. The need to show off, broadcast yourself, and receive feedback is huge in this culture. This young girl comes off as a typical disconnected, ignorant, self-absorbed American.

When the US Army liberated Dachau, the liberating troops were so disgusted by what they saw that they summarily executed between 30 and 50 guards.

Made me think of the "Band of Brothers" episode "Why we fight." I have visited this camp. It was a sad, historical place. I am surprised she didn't take a selfie of herself where the human hair was after the guide told everyone not to take pics out of respect for the dead. Dumb bitch.

Hell China has a guide on behavior for its people who are traveling, since they know 1) many don't know a lot about other cultures and 2)makes China look bad when its citizens do stupid shit.

Well, so much for getting over it. We know there were never atrocities committed during wartime before.

I wonder what the Japanese internment camps would have looked like if the US had lost the war.

But I do understand the point being made about careless selfies.

Nevertheless I'm greatly disturbed by what is happening in Gaza right now and coupled with an acute awareness of all the time, money, energy and effort Western Civilization has expended on the Jews and Israel over the last 50 years, that girl has plenty to smile about. PLENTY.

God bless.

One of my British school friends once did a Nazi salute for a photo outside the Reichstag in Berlin. It was a bad joke in poor taste. At the time, I let out a nervous laugh and told him to stop before he got arrested. Nothing was uploaded to the internet.

Another time during university, I filmed a German friend of mine singing "Deutschland Uber Alles" on my camera. Drunken stupidity. We laughed about it the next time we met, but the video was quickly deleted. Nobody was offended on Twitter.

People have always done stupid shit, but social media means that such stupid shit can be broadcast and potentially shared with millions of people.

When you see another article like this the best thing is to chuckle and move on. One stupid girl doing something stupid says little about anything. People have always done stupid shit. Save your energy for the shit that matters.

It's like Bieber hoping that Anne Frank would be a "belieber."

I didn't know Bieber said that but it gave me a good laugh. Props to JB for keeping his eyes on the prize.

And I agree with him. I too wish she could have been a belieber. I wish that girl could be lifted from the despicable darkness and insanity of the place and time in which she was fated to live and die, to the glory, freedom and plenty of today's America where she could be a "belieber" like a million other cutiepies with smiles revealing perfect dentition.

The disgrace and evil insanity of the Holocaust are not deserving of "respect" but they do warrant an instant of gratitude for an inspired American world in which teenage girls are preoccupied with selfies and Justin Bieber -- as they should be -- rather than writing diaries that are fetishized by posterity as a memento of the worthless savagery and idiocy of mass murder.

Rep point for a selfie at the downed Malaysian Airline crash site. Thought so.

I've been there, absolute last thing I could think of is smiling for a big happy photo. One of the gloomiest places I've ever been, and for a couple days after it just had me thinking about how evil people can be and just 'why?'.

That said, I think this is a typical self appeasing over reaction. She went there, she's showing an interest, which is more than can be said for probably 2/3rd of Americans. I mean like that article is a perfect example. Oh you're so offended at the disrespect she showed? Towards this sacred place which you are so involved with that you don't even know what country it's in? I can remember when I first learned it was in Poland and being surprised (because like others I too assumed Germany) but I was like 11. The reporter is showing a child like knowledge of geography/history, yet at the same time she's chiding someone for a childlike self-centered mentality? Honestly the worst I could say of her is that she's immature and not appreciating the magnitude of such a place. But again, I'm sure most forum posters here (like dreambig said) have done some incredibly stupid shit, which if viewed from an outside perspective without the benefit of context or knowing you were wasted, would look just as bad or worse, we were all just fortunate enough not to have to get scrutinized on the internet by PC heros.

People love to get offended these days. In my mind it's truly a modern day which hunt, and a means to appease your own guilt. If I call that guy who said 'black' instead of 'African American' a racist, then that means I'm clearly not racist, and I can be excused if I cross the road when I see two black guys coming towards me.

Same thing here. If I get outraged over this girl who showed disrespect at Auschwitz, then clearly I'm a friend of the Jews, and can be forgiven for not taking a slight interest in history, even knowing the name Berkanau, or knowing what fucking country it's in.

In 1969, the German artist Anselm Kiefer did a series of photographs around Europe, called "Occupations," with himself giving the Nazi salute.

I want to visit that place, but for a first hand account of the area, to think and feel what they have might been feeling, I'd take a pic of the gates. Everything else there, you should give your full attention to with no distractions.
