If you want your mind blown, do a Google Images search for "Ebola Chan" or look up articles on the topic. This is the latest 4chan troll job. Basically, they are trolling the shit out of everyone that there is a white cult worshiping a new goddess called Ebola Chan who wants to eradicate Africans. They make fan art and take photos of supposed shrines to her, etc. It went viral (no pun intended) when a Nigerian forum picked up on the conspiracy theory that Western doctors in Africa are actually trying to infect people, rather than help them. This is some next level trolling, at once both horrifying and hilarious.
Goodness, that's really irresponsible. Trolling overeducated feminists who are supposed to know better to expose their hypocrisy is one thing, but trolling actual people who are affected by this crap and already prone to misinformation is just crazy. These 4chan people are overstepping themselves.
There is no one "4chan people" though. 4chan is a collection of anonymous imageboards. Most boards hate every other board on the site, and /pol/, where most of these stories have been coming from recently, is made up of at least five vague factions who spend as much time trolling eachother as they do everyone else. Hell, this "ebola-chan" thing seems to be as much about trolling /x/ (the paranormal board) as it is being edgy. A post from /x/:
Whilst it's nice to able to pin an identity to behaviours you do and don't like, the bottom line is that 4chan receives over 20,000,000 unique visitors per month, and this "ebola-chan" fad is the work of a few hundred, maybe a few thousand people. I guess my point is, it will be very difficult for anyone unfamiliar with imageboard culture to accurately interpret the information they're getting, especially when their primary source is the mainstream media.
Incidentally (slightly off-topic) if anyone was in any doubt as to where moot's allegiance lies, note how he has done
nothing about the hundred ebola-chan threads per day, nor did he do
anything when /pol/ were circulating horrendously racist comics with the signature of Ben Garrison (a supposed "libertarian" comic artist who called for laws against hate speech) added into them. Yet threads on gamer-gate were banned for "encouraging harassment".
