A full scale military invasion on its own may fail, but if the invasion was preceded by revolutionary / guerrilla warfare and "terrorist" activities to disrupt / deceive the American defences, then an invasion may succeed. Think calling in multiple bomb threats to distract the police force so you are relatively undisturbed when you rob a bank.

Why bring supplies / resources when they could be stock piled in country before hand?

Not to sound too tin foil hat, and I understand that there are certain pockets of conflict going on around the world, but it does seem that western society is collectively in a lull right now, as if we're waiting for something to happen, or something perhaps needs to happen. There's a decent novel, Invasion, by Eric Harry, on the subject. The Chinese, led by ultranationalists, roll the board in East Asia, Australia, and India without much opposition. They nuke Japan into submission. The USA stands by. They build huge amphibious assault ships in Korean shipyards. Then they use the Caribbean islands as staging for an invasion of the USA from the Gulf Coast.

The soap opera personal aspects of the plot detract from the book, but the military stuff is interesting and credible.

It is no coincidence that in the end USA and Russia ended up as the two superpowers after WWII. Their geographic position makes them practically impossible to be invaded across whole territory. In any case, only in video games does the invasion happen overnight, so even if some alliance had the idea, USA would have practically years to shore up its defences and possibly strike first so as to prevent fighting on its own ground.

That being said though, Rome fell to the barbarians, when the internal struggles in the society made it impossible to defend itself from the outside attack. All the inherent advantages aside of US military might and its location aside, its the soldiers that do the killing. With Rome, in the end most of its military forces were consisting not from its citizens but also from barbarians. Food for thought.

I agree, I can't see war in america happening on a large scale unless something else happens first that makes another large country desperate or some natural disaster cripples the country.

People are too smart, too well connected and too self interested to bother. Its like the Chinese natural resource strategy in Africa and the Canadian oil sands. If they just buy it all they 'own it' and export it to themselves...why bother with the hassle of invading to control it?

A foreign invasion of the US would strategically never work. Read what General Smedley Butler had to say about this in "War is a Racket". Even if it were attempted it wouldn't last five minutes. Japanese General Yamamoto said during WWII the US could never be invaded because "there would be a rifle behind of every blade of grass". Though our political leaders tell us otherwise and that we need to invade foreign lands in order to protect our freedoms. I can assure you, even without the military, any red blooded American with any sense of honor in defending his family and country will be like Iraqi insurgents setting IED's off in the streets taking out the occupiers. Though like some of the others have said, I do have some reservations have about even that. The only way to invade and take down America is through subversion of the government, which in my opinion is already under way. And has been for sometime sadly.
