When I was in Sweden the cab driver ripped me off. My cousin got so angry with the fare she told the driver she would call the police and the company. The driver took 30% off the fare.
In Slovakia I took a cab ride with two other girls. The driver scammed us and left us in a place 7 kms from the destiny. I then told the girls in Portugal cabs will scam tourists, but at least they will leave them in their destiny.
My grandfather in Paris once payed the equivalent of 30 euros for a coffee, back when there were still francs.
A good advice already told is ask the price to the driver before getting in. Calling for an oficial cab company also can prevent this from happening.
There´s not a single place in the world were cabs will not try to scam tourists. And i´m not defending latin culture. I have no doubt that latin culture aims to scam others. Basically latin countries are divided by thousands of tribes, normally family and 5 to 10 foreign people, who are friends family. People from the tribe will not steal each other much, but will try to steal every other person who doesn´t belong to that tribe. There´s no idea of state or common good.

Taxi drivers are thieves in every country.
In Serbia, one tried to put on the midnight fare rate during the day.
In New Delhi, the airport has a strict system where you pay for your taxi at one counter and then use the receipt at another. Even with this system, they tried to scam me. It was 2 am and the place was empty. The counter guy pretended to not know the address of my hotel (which was the closest hotel to the airport). He just kept saying over and over, I need an address sir. (I only knew the hotel name and that it was next to the airport.) Meanwhile his taxi friends where offering to take me there for 5 times the going rate. After talking to counter guy for 10 minutes, he finally gave up his scam and did his fucking job.
In Argentina, my friend got a 20 peso counterfeit bill back as part of his change. One thing cool about Argentina is that I had a female driver once -- how strange is that?
Taxi drivers have little incentive not to rip you off. Unless you get a taxi from a branded taxi company, taxi drivers dont really see you as a repeat customer. Looking forward to the day with robotic drivers replace all human taxi drivers.

Man, Colombia is becoming less and less apealing to me after the Colombian bitches I've been meeting here in Miami. Every one I've met has totally dissed me. Last night was the worst of all. I was talking to one for a while, and the dumb mother fucker I was with, I didn't even know him, he was a friend of a friend says something to the extent.. "See, you wanted to meet some Brazilian girls, but we have beautiful Latina women right here." (I had asked him earlier where I can find Brazilian women in Miami). She looks at me and says, "Well, I'm not Brazilian, I'm Colombian." Then pretty much told me to fuck off and wouldn't say a word to me, but she kept hanging out with the kid, seemed real into him. She was even talking to the kid who 5 minutes earlier basically told us he was afraid to talk to girls. I don't know if what he said killed it for me, or if my game was just weak. I was pretty drunk at the time. The whole situation pissed me off. I was the one who approached them and this douchebag really went and said something like that? What a fucker...
But I do realize that Colombian girls in Colombia are probably much different than Colombian girls in Miami.

And back to the taxi drivers... I work with a couple of companies at my job. They are vultures! I'll have drivers from other companies come up and say they are waiting to take someone to the airport. I'll ask who called, they'll say they don't know. I ask which company they work for and they'll try and guess the company that I work with. I say, "Nope, we don't call yellow cab co." Then they'll start screaming, "I know you have someone that needs a ride!!!" I'll say "Who? Where are they going? When did they call? You know nothing, get the fuck out of here, this is where I guests park for vallet!" Also, when guests stand outside with their bags, I used to make the mistake of asking the driver, "Are you from _______ company?" Of corse they always say yes. The reason this is matters for me is I get a commision on the taxis. If someone from a company we don't work with picks the people up, I'm out however many dollars. Now I always tell guests to take a seat inside and I'll let them know when their taxi is here. Sometimes they don't listen and come outside. If a cab pulls up I always ask "Which company are you with?" Instead of, "Are you with _________."

I've been living in Medellin for about 6 weeks and haven't had any problems with the taxis. In fact one time I was convinced the taxi was taking me to the wrong place and I told him so, but it turns out he was right and I was wrong.
Sometimes they've had a problem finding a particular address but given the layout of the city, it's not surprising. Whoever designed this city had some serious mental problems or was doing some major drugs.

The worst I was overcharged by a taxi driver was paying $100 for a ride worth $20 (this, by the way, happened in USA). Makes me wonder what amounts you guys are talking about?

Damn, I know BBL is a hothead (and I can't talk) but I can't believe the number of guys that are BLAMING him for the cabbies trying to rip him off. I hope he scared the fuck out of those maggots.
BBL, on another note, seems to me like you didn't have to fly all the way to Colombia to get money hungry chicks.

Taxi drivers out here are almost all crooked. I got charged an outrageous amount for a ride from LAX to Hollywood and I just said, "nope. I want your id number, I'm reporting this to your company" the guy argued with me, then didn't understand my English, then acted all irate and then finally said "just give me 35 bucks".
The ones in Vegas are even worse. I had a guy try to SELL me a coupon he cut out of a magazine for "vip entry" into a club.

Hailing a Cab in Colombia off the streets is always a gamble...
If you want to play it safer, always call a taxi company and have them send a guy over... Also when the taxi gets there, remember the taxi number. If the taxi works for a company it WILL have a number... that's how they will identify their drivers. There's a taxi company in Medellin that has service in English... I forget the number but it's one of the big ones.
When drivers rob someone or don't perform they kick them out, so these cab companies can be fairly reliable...
Sounds like you were about to get robbed, so good thing you were quick on your feet. That's the nature of Colombia... No de papaya percero!

Another trick is for a shady taxi driver to ask you to help him dial a number on his cell phone or something that leads you to put a "specially laced" cell phone to your face that has scopolamine. You're done.
Never, ever touch or bring anyones cell phone to your face that you do not know. Women will do this to you, so be cautious always!

Heard a lot of scopolamine stories in Colombia in the vein of "A guy that knows a guy I know was scoped," but no direct stories. It's the same type of "you're going to get kidnapped" fearmongering.
World is a big, dangerous place... be careful, etc. etc etc

Funny thing is that the only place where I've actually seen someone get roofied is here in Jersey. Desperate guys hit on my girl in a club and then roofied her drink cause they got shot down...

Damn BBL sorry to hear about your horrible week or two in Medellin. Again to all the rest of you, unless you have friends/family there in Colombia or go with someone who does, then BE REAL CAREFUL. A Gringo is a target not so much for bieng kidnapped anymore but for the $$$ you apparently have stapled to your chest when you walk around. Again let me say that Medellin was already a hot spot for dirtbags, outlaws, scammers and mongers waaay before Roosh went there and wrote Bang and way before half of us were old enough to travel. Not only just Colombians, but I can tell you I know personally several Canadians, Europeans and Americans that were scammed or tricked by other Gringos on rooms for rent/sale, food prices, inclusive trips etc.
I never had a problem with Cabbies luckily, however I did have some laundry done when I was staying in a hotel, and the next day the guy brought my stuff back on hangers and wanted $40 American dollars for like 2 pair of jeans, some underwear and 3 t-shirts, I raised holy hell and he actually acted as if I was simply going to have to pay him or not get my clothes back. Then after some haggling, and me telling him I would make sure he never handled laundry again and that nobody that spoke English would ever stay in his fucked hotel again he backed down and agreed to take $12 for my laundry which was still high, I can get my shit cleaned and folded for that here.

Also guys before you go jumping on "It's latin culture" shit...its not latin culture. Its poor culture. A cabbie will fuck you just as fast in Russian or N. Ireland let's not even get started on shit holes like India or places in Africa.
Actually I am pretty happy to say that after having traveled a bit, our Police are pretty cool, our cabbies are kept honest and shit is more honest overall in the USA than pretty much anywhere else.
Also, I don't blame bootylvr for going off, however remember that at the end of the day what ends up bieng a $1- to us, is an extra fare or two to him. Not excusing that behaviour, because its still dishonest, but you get the point.
