Wtf.

(CNN) -- A male sophomore went on a stabbing spree at his Pittsburgh-area high school early Wednesday, an emergency management agency spokesman said.
At least 20 students at Franklin Regional Senior High School were injured, and the alleged attacker is in custody, said Dan Stevens, a spokesman for Westmoreland County Emergency Management.
The violence, Stevens said, happened in classrooms and a hallway. Four people were flown to hospitals by helicopter, he said.
Seven teens and one adult were being treated at nearby Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, according to Dr. Chris Kaufmann. Their injuries are "quite serious," and "some are clearly life threatening," he said.
Victims were stabbed in their torso, abdomen, chest and back areas, and two people were sent to surgery immediately after arriving, he said. Those two patients had low blood pressure, he said. A third was being prepared for surgery Wednesday morning, and the rest were being evaluated to see whether surgery was necessary, he said.

Eleven victims were taken to four University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospitals, UPMC spokesman Cindy McGrath said. One was sent to UPMC Presbyterian; four were taken to Children's Hospital; one was taken to UPMC Mercy; and five were taken to UPMC East. She did not have ages or conditions of the victims.
The students who were hurt range in age from 14 to 17, Stevens said. All of the injures are stabbing-related, such as lacerations or punctures, and there were no guns involved he, said.
A message on the Franklin Regional School District's website said all of its elementary schools were closed after the incident, and "the middle school and high school students are secure."
The school is in Murrysville, about 15 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh. Information on what led to the stabbings and the conditions of the injured are still unfolding.
Later Wednesday morning, students were being released to their parents, Stevens said. Shortly before 10 a.m. ET, CNN affiliate KDKA reported that some parents were beginning to be reunited with their children.
Bill Rehkopf, a KDKA radio host and Franklin Regional High School graduate, reported on air that he was shocked by the stabbings.
He kept thinking, "It doesn't happen here, it can't happen here," he said.
He said he was seeing parents showing up at the school and an increasing media presence. Parents appear to be calm, he said. Another KDKA reporter said she spoke with a parent who said she received a cell phone call from her daughter, who told her mother that "something bad" happened and that she needed to be picked up.

I wonder what the case will be this time.
Stabbing 20 people in that quick of succession sounds difficult. Also paints an extremely harrowing picture in my mind.

That's crazy. Stabbing is very different from opening fire with a machine gun.

Nobody tried to stop him earlier?

Having trained in self-defense i can say most people will freeze when someone is coming at them with a knife. The ones who don't freeze run away.
Makes sense really.
I bet he just walked up and stabbed a few people and they just stood there.
If this guy is in anyway trained on how to use a knife they would have had a difficult time stopping him short of shooting him.

A knife seems personal like he had revenge on his mind. A gun is just maximum amount of damage over time. Or it could be a simple case of not being able to acquire a firearm or the ammunition.

This is pretty common in China, last I remember.

Back in the day we let young men loose their aggression through dodgeball and martial arts.
Now they go literally bonkers when they are incessantly told "everything is okay" and "it all gets better" and then it DOESN'T because a bunch of platitudes doesn't change their situation in the slightest.

One of the guards was stabbed in the stomach.

Apparently the kid is a 16 year old.

A question for those with experience with both guns and knives, especially those who have used them in combat. To me, it seems like it would take additional aggression to use a knife instead of a gun. A gun is generally from distance, to me it is less personal. To take a knife and put that much energy into it indicates some sort of rage or excessive energy to do that, very primal I imagine. I don't think I am explaining it very well, but it seems like to go on a knife rampage seems to require an additional layer of craziness, especially considering how easy guns are to get.

They did catch him. Which makes sense I imagine a person with a knife may be easier to subdue, I said may, I have never had to subdue anyone. So I am curious what madness is in this kid's knife.

The army spends a good amount of time teaching recruits close quarters combat for a reason.

If someone is within 2-3 feet of you, recruits are instructed to not even bother pulling out their gun. Instead, they should get getting their knife ready. This is because an aggressor can easily point the nozzle of the gun away from them, or, even worse, they can simply take the gun outright. Trying to shoot someone with a gun in CQC is dangerous and risky.

However, a very sharp knife cannot be taken from you, and combat knives are sharp enough to cut through bone. You don't need to reload them, and usually a knife wound is worse than a bullet wound. Not only is the knife wound bigger and deeper but the blade can injure multiple organs at once. Also, knives cannot be stopped by Kevlar.

Thus, knives are more dangerous than guns in the right situation. And by banning guns, you create the optimal situation for CQC weaponry.

Ironic when you ban guns, you just make people more vulnerable to other weapons that are just as dangerous as guns. The only solution is to give more guns to more people so they can defend themselves. Liberals are way too detached from reality, however, so I expect more bloodshed in the future.

@ Samseau

growing up in london, this was a major problem. There was always some sort of knife violence going on.
The police don't carry guns, they had to call in a special unit for that...

Knives require a grizzly mindset.

But in this chaotic situation of people running and freezing why couldn't any teachers swoop him from behind. Depending on your angle and timing you have a 60/40 chance of clocking a swift blow to this kids head.

Plus the Bear and the group analogy comes up. Only the slowest, or those frozen in fear would become targets. With youth obesity at 35% in America I would not be surprised, as sad is it sounds, that many of the injured were obese or severely out of shape.

The school also looks in a suburb setting and to be in a nice community:

'One man is in custody after Toronto police say at least four people were stabbed at an office building in the northern part of the city today.

Police said the attack happened just after 9:30 a.m. ET on the fifth floor of an office complex at 4110 Yonge St., near York Mills Avenue.

Police received multiple 911 calls of an assailant attacking people with a sharp object.

CBC News has confirmed that four people were taken to hospital with stab wounds.

A man and a woman in their 30s are among the people who were stabbed. The two suffered multiple, serious stab wounds, according to police, and are in critical condition in hospital.

Two other men whose ages are not known were transported with serious wounds to a trauma centre.

The fifth floor of the large office building remained in lockdown as of 11 a.m.'

80% of the teachers at a school are women. They wouldn't be able to take down a teenage boy, as even a teenage boy is much stronger than a fully developed woman.

Are we factoring in that most women are obese and develop muscles to support the extra weight? [Image: lol.gif]

This is how all of that social conditioning backfires. 'If someone is doing something wrong, go tell a teacher' how about 'if someone is doing something wrong, stop them' whatever is wrong with the kid that went on the stabbing rampage, I know one thing, he has got balls of steel. It takes some intestinal fortitude to inflict that kind of up close, personal pain on that many people. I mean those columbine kids killed and injured 34 and that was two, heavily armed kids. This is one feral son of a bitch with knives taking down 20.

he just shielded some girls, (is that white knighting?) he didn't stop the guy, that was an assistant principle.

Also, seems like Mr. Slash happy was only armed with kitchen knives so there goes what I also thought was going to be some sort of knife-ophile with knife training. If the dude was into knives they would have been something other than what you can grab from mom's butcher block.

Hope all the victims make it through.

I wonder what freedom squashing political agenda is going to be pushed through now because of this attack. Obviously they can't demonize gun ownership with this one, so what'll the 'solutions' be? More pills to numb boys? Assault rifle armed security at schools? X-Ray machines at the entrances and random spot checks in the halls?

It'll be interesting to hear the kid say why he did this.

He did a great deal of damage with just ordinary kitchen knives. Imagine if he just knew about cutco knives or other fine cutlery.
