If you won the lottery would you remain anonymous?

Just reading this story

I am wondering why the hell you would not want to remain anon after a win this big given that you do have the choice.

What would you do?

Set up some trusts. Push for anonymity, shell companies, etc.

Never tell anyone you have money, it causes headaches. All of sudden they think their problems should be your problems.

Poon falling from the sky. You'd have to be experienced enough though to deal with the female moves with that much cash on the table(read pro athletes). I would go public and run with it probably. I might say I'm going to hire blah blah and open up some invest blah blah but after two hours I'd post my ticket on facebook and here probably..

I do actually believe I'm going to win even though I rarely play and lose the tickets after I buy them..

You would be retarded to go public if you had a choice unless you had a legitimate good reason to. Poon isn't one of them.

You want poon go open a night club or strip club or porn studio with the money.

There was a thread here a while back that gave some excellent advice on what to do if you win the lottery. I can't find it, maybe somebody else can. Basically, travel to your nearest large city where nobody knows you and get an appointment at the largest and most reputable law firm around. Have a trust collect the ticket as one lump sum and have the trust money put into tbills.* Automatic distributions every year or month or even week from the trust to your bank account. Don't let anybody know. If need be, gradually move to a new community or overseas.

*I know you aren't even going to beat inflation... but if it is a very large amount of unearned money, you can just ride out any economic disaster short of US default without having to worry about your nest egg. I'd have at least half in a few index funds... but that's me.

I was wondering the exact opposite just earlier today - why would anyone voluntarily choose to go public??

Seems crazy to me. Given the option, I'd rather take half the money just to remain anonymous.

I would tell only a handful of relatives and maybe one or two very close friends. I certainly wouldn't allow any news stories.

People will eventually find out if its a big win.

You just have to be good at telling people "No" or tell them the money is locked up in trusts (which can be true). Hire a financial advisor/lawyer and blame him for not being able to distribute any funds to relatives and friends looking for new cars and to pay off their debts on your dime.

I'd likely hide pretty well the fact that I came upon some cash.

On the outside, it wouldn't seem like any of my spending habits have drastically changed. It's already normal for me to disappear for a few weeks.

Yes.

That's why I haven't said anything.

FYI most major lotteries, see power ball as an example, when you play you're legally signing up for your name to be announced so you don't have a choice. That's why they are up there with a big fat check. This is why zero winners have ever kept silent.

This is also why most guys go bankrupt they then have their names plastered everywhere and get sold a ton of bunk/garbage stuff and go broke as a joke.

Another reason why Vegas is great for gambling, if you make a good amount no one really knows. See - secret high end gambling scene.

Yes...some lotteries have in their rules that you have to appear for a photo op/announcement. But I'd disappear shortly thereafter. Like I'd have a car waiting to take me from the photo op to the airport...

+1 to WestCoast as the voice of reason once again with all things finance related... My buddy's father hit 5 of 6 (no mega) twice in the California lottery but he had a shit ton of back taxes so he saw less than $5,000 total from both payouts. Even though he didn't win the big prize, my friend said his father had to register his name as a 5/6 winner.

There's no way to win anonymously, but as people in this thread have said, there are ways to protect it... Get the best estate planner in town, tie it all up in trusts and vehicles that make it hard for parasites to come after your green and just disappear to another country for a few years. Let people forget about you and when the dust settles, you can move to a new joint and start a life as one of the 1%.

If the rules allowed, yes definitely. If for no other reason than simple security, though personally I'd have many more. If you allow your name to be released, or this is required by the board's rules, you can never "unrelease" it. With the internet now all knowledge is available to all people, everywhere for all time. Well, at least unless we run out of energy to run the servers. If you have an unusual name, or first and last name combo, there'll be no hiding. Google will get you every time.

In the spectacularly unlikely event of a lottery win in a jurisdiction that required name disclosure and/or photo I would wear a disguise to the photo shoot and probably legally change my name afterwards ( I believe I am the only person in the world with my first-last name combo).

In my city there was a guy who won the lottery.
He showed up for his picture wearing a wig, hat, and dark sun glasses.

If you win the big bucks, you'll have a target on your back. Many people will view you as a walking ATM machine, and someone who can solve their problems.

People will try to sue you. They'll find a reason.

Broads will poke holes in the condom and try to get pregnant for the child support.

Family and friends will come out of the woodwork with sob story problems that could be solved with your money.

I'd try to be anonymous and maybe have a front story to explain my lifestyle. Maybe buy a bar or club and say you're doing well but everything you're not spending on yourself is tied up in the business.

Take care of those titties for me.

Like said above, most of the major lotteries make winners into promotional tools.

There are criminals out there, con artists, kidnappers, etcetera, but most folks hand out gobs of money to family. That's a problem even old wealth faces.

The other way to go bankrupt is "investing in private equity", and by that I mean giving your best friend ten million to build apartment complexes in college towns. The fact that it sounds like a good idea is why people find themselves in bad deals.

It's mundane things like generosity and bad business deals that lead most folks who get huge windfalls into the poor house.

Why do people plaster their personal lives and information all over social media for free?

A place where they receive nothing and also give up the rights to the content of their lives?

Because some people are just that desperate for attention and validation.

European lotteries all allow the winners to be anonymous. Especially the euromillions mentioned in the OP

Yes for being anonymous

We had this same conversation at work. We didn't know about if one was required to partake in the photos and media if they won.

I wouldn't care if people knew. I'm not a pushover and it's very easy for me to say no to people. I'd rather have dough and people know than be broke and a joke.

I would relish the opportunity to tell people to fuck off.

It would also be fun to have people coming to you for money and see what kind of degrading things you could get them to do to themselves for money.

I wouldn't tell anyone besides my closest family members and friends.

First, I would divide the money and put it into a few different long-term deposit bank accounts.

Then I would spend the rest of my life living off the interest, travelling the world impregnating women.
