If you won the lottery would you remain anonymous?

You would be surprised at the kinds of scenarios people can engineer to "persuade" you to part with your windfall. Your problem rests not with conviction and weakness of will but rather forceful extraction of your wealth by a variety of legal as well as "extralegal" means. Google 'lottery winner horror stories' to get an idea of what can go wrong.
I'm sure some of you guys have probably seen that show the lottery changed my life on TLC or something like that. Anyone who wouldn't want to remain anonymous is an attention whore and asking for trouble and hassle. People will come out of the woodwork saying you owe them money, everyone will want to sue you for something, everyone will want to ask you for somethihng.
I remember one of the guys stories he would get hundreds of letters not even addressed to him or his house just "Florida Lottery Winer" asking him to buy them a house or pay for medical treatments.
Plus the strife it will cause with frinds and family. I would do the shell company thing and trusts, maybe start a business or two. I may help some people out investing but wouldn't let them know the money was comming from me would say I have a banking connection wouldn't lend it directly to keep the anonymity. I'd spend my money on travel and things that don't draw attention, wouldn't be cruising arund in a lambo but would live comfortably.

There was a thread here a while back that gave some excellent advice on what to do if you win the lottery. I can't find it, maybe somebody else can.
Is it that one where someone had the idea of buying a football club? And later one of the guys said those kind of threads were bullshit because nobody is going to win the lottery anyway?

Whenever I think about winning the lottery the first thing I think of is staying anonymous. I'll try to contain myself and stay cool about it, keep living as I was but that would be hard knowing you don't have to do anything else. I would use the money create novel experiences but lavish riches not really. But money tends to get in to your head. Won't know until we win it.
I think in England, if you go public Camelot (the lottery company) pay for all your police protection etc. That said, I'd never go public. Just pay for security yourself if you think you need it.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. - H L Mencken
Does anyone know why people go public?
Doesn't make much sense to me.
I suppose - it might be useful since you can tell everyone at the same time and move on with your life.
As opposed to trying to keep it secret.

I would relish the opportunity to tell people to fuck off.
It would also be fun to have people coming to you for money and see what kind of degrading things you could get them to do to themselves for money.
Eh?...I don't know about that approach.
I will admit, part of me would like to play that role but nowadays, folks are not playing fair anymore. They will snatch close family members or even worst if they feel that they have no options against you.
I would just be low-key.

As some have mentioned, most U.S. state lotteries force winners to go public as a prerequisite to participating in the lottery. The state lotteries sacrifice their winners on the alter of increased publicity for the lottery.
Having said that, there are ways to remain anonymous for those who can think outside the box. All you need to do is think like a tycoon.

I think the scenario you are talking about is far more common outside the US than it is within the US. There are tons of famous wealthy people that haven't had that problem here. I was just kidding around anyway though.

I am wondering why the hell you would not want to remain anon after a win this big given that you do have the choice.
What would you do?
Take the money in a lump sum, leave the U.S. Immediately, and buy Investment real estate in other countries

You could try to pull off a drug lord/mafia don vibe.
Don't smile much or at all.
Pay for things in cash.
Be secretive about your phone calls.

This is the recent winner of the $425m lottery. Props on trying to hide his face and waiting to collect until less people care.
If I was suddenly rich, I would want to be more anonymous than I already am. Simply because I'd be able to afford to be as anonymous as I want to be.

Some people think being rich is something to be proud of and show off even if you didn't earn it.
It's a retarded mindset of course but unfortunately it is how most people think.

Definitely remain anonymous. I can't fathom why people would intentionally publicize winning the lottery. Just asking to be mugged or be bombarded with people needing help with their money problems...
