This is why I never keep nude pics on my phone. As soon as I snap or receive them (girls give them out like blown kisses these days) I upload them to a Google Drive.
When I die and my Google drive account lapses the guy who goes through my online stuff will be suffering from a pant ripping böner that day.
Lets say I go through the customs and they look through my phone and see a naked picture of a girl that was sent to me. So what? What are they gonna do?
Read the OP?
I think he means how will they get you in trouble.

Why are you scarred? As long as you don't have any CP or animal abuse, you're okay.
I just tell them straght up what I went for:
"What were you doing in Mexico?"
" Getting fucked up, mostly getting drunk and hook up with rich mexican milfs"
"You go there every other month for that?"
"Yeah, I got bored and need to have fun"
"That must be a lot of fun, welcome back to 'murica"

There are people on airplanes who are specifically on there to collect intel on passengers. Some are there to see if passengers are scamming the visa system, others to catch people doing criminal activity.
The best thing you can do is be friendly with whomever you chat with on an airplane but limit the conversation to the most PG topics possible. If you start talking about pounding thai girls with your buddy it may very well be overheard by someone who is collecting intel.
I think I had one of these people sit beside me on a plane once. He wouldn't stop talking to me about very perverse and questionable topics trying to get my input on them.
I've had my bags checked after customs multiple times but never had anyone actually stop and look through my phone or computer.

The fourth amendment doesn't apply at border crossings because it has been determined by law and the courts that you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in that venue. This is not new. It has been this way for a looong time. The fourth amendment only protects you from government searches in times and places where a reasonable person would determine that you have a right to expect privacy.
Also, there is no "right to travel". If you are not a citizen of country x, they can decide not to admit you for any reason that their laws permit. Most governments have a catch all ineligiblity that border officials can use. In the United States it is INA 212(a)(7)(A)(i). Basically means that you are not in possession of a valid visa. But wait you say, I have a valid visa! If the CBP officer does not believe you are a bona fide traveler, s/he will cancel your visa and you are now ineligible 7(A)(i) and will be on the next available flight back to your place of origin.
As for the people who advocate stone walling CBP, you are right that you don't have to answer questions but he has the right to detain you for a certain amount of time. If you're willing to fight the power, good for you. Enjoy your time at the airport. Same with a traffic stop and the police ask to search the interior of your car, you can refuse, but the standard for getting a warrant for the interior of a car is so low that they will get one if they wish to get one. In the mean time, you'll be on the side of the road for 2-3 hours while they work on it. Trunk of the car is different, higher standard applies and the warrants are harder to get. They probably won't get one for that unless they have a solid, reasonable, articulable suspicion that a crime is occurring. The car example was told to me by an attorney at my dad's law office with 30 years of criminal law experience, for what its worth. I have also taken CON law and criminal law courses in college but I am not a lawyer.

I've had the same experience in Charlotte returning from Peru, an agent checked my iphone and saw semi-naked pics of a girl I was banging there. I just played it off like she was my gf. He didn't pursue the issue, and even joked around saying 'sexy girl you got there.
I've noticed the Custom agents in the smaller cities in the US are a bit more anal in regards to finding shit, in any event, I always move my xxx pics to a flashcard just to be on the safe side.

Fair bit of misinformation on this thread so hopefully to clarify. I researched this fairly heavily after the same thing happened to me. I was aware it could happen, but before that didn't know the details.
First, at the border, you have no property rights. Unless you are a citizen, they don't need to let you in. The officer can say 'I felt like he was going to work illegally' give some BS reason, and you have very little recourse. Judge jurr and executioner. You are not in the country yet, and a loose interpretation of the charter/constitution/rules apply. Courts have upheld this.
If they aren't satisfied with your goods, they can seize them until they are. They need to let you in, but they can let you in wearing a garbage bag if they think all your clothes are sewn from synthetic threads with dissolved drugs in them.
When it comes to electronic data, they have every right to search them. All my stuff has passwords, so I asked what would happen if I didn't give them, because I was concerned about confidential work stuff, they said they would seize the device and break in.
So I complied. It was a cursory 5 minute search on each. Searches for things like *.jpg (finds all pics), and then they can scan a thousand pics in a 5 mins. you can look at a 5 pages of pics per second and quickly see if anything is amiss. The power died 1 minute into the search on my small netbook, and after the other two proper computers and since my story was congruent, they just let me go.
Clearly here they were searching for the low hanging fruit. And kiddy porn/hate stuff stored in obvious places. Not movies and music of which I have a ton. Refuse the windows password? Have encrypted files and refuse the key? Then your computer will get sent off to people who have abilities and skills far in excess of 'Joe at the border'. So you make the call. If you have something to hide, its better to do basic file hiding/encryption, and disguise the file as something else, and comply, and hope they don't go balls deep. "Where's the best place to hide a pebble" as the saying goes.
There was a court in the states that said in one of the circuits (9th-Cali I believe) that they do however need to have probable cause to do a forensic search of a computer. ie, breaking encryption, restoring deleted files. The case in question the guy was a sex offender, so they found the cause was there, and then found deleted kiddie porn pics. Like others have said, simply deleting isn't good enough. It takes multiple wipes and rewrites to make sure the data is truey gone.
This is why I was so curious and annoyed at this. It doesn't just check what's on there, it checks anything that's *ever* been on there or accessed. Accidentally download mislabeled kiddie porn then promptly delete? Well you could go to jail. Your entire hard drive is a huge fucking place to fish, especially without the benefit of context.
Even encryption is tricky now. Most people use easy passwords because they're easy to remember. 64 character, upper/lower/random/signs? Great. Are you typing that in every time? Maybe store it on your computer? Copied/pasted it from before? Emailed it to yourself and accessed it on that computer? It's remarkable their abilities when it comes to encryption. So don't think getting TrueCrypt and having a password of 123456 means your safe.
My advice, is first use an encrypted cloud. Don't take anything with you. Ensure you're deleting files with CCleaner or something else, do multiple passes over night. The next one is a huge grey area, but I'm of the opinion to fully cooperate. Be a little chummy, a little annoyed but understand they're doing their jobs, just a regular guy, back from vacation, nothing to hide. Show that persona, and the search will likely be quicker and easier than "Fuck you, you don't have any rights to seize that" Maybe they do, maybe they don't but piss them off and it will make life harder. If you do have something to find, they will try their damndest to find it, because you pissed them off. And their guns are bigger than yours.

In case no one has mentioned it, Truecrypt not only has a decoy password for a fake encrypted container, it can do the same for an entire operating system. It is not a piece of cake to implement but neither do you need a C.S. degree to understand it. Just a weekend of free time with the Truecrypt manual would do it.
You can have one real one and one fake one. Arrogant POS bored officer asks to go through your windows/linux files, just give him the fake one to boot the decoy operating system. Not possible to prove it is fake at all. This is what I use on my main PC and laptops and since I live near the Canadian border I am always having to put up with their bullshit so this comes in quite handy.
I wouldnt try this with other vendors such as Drivecrypt, etc. No idea if the NSA has bribed those guys or not for a backdoor. What with the PRISM and Snowden files I wouldn't be surprised.

Lawyer here.
There is an exception to the Fourth Amendment warrant requirement for border searches. In other words, CBP does not need a warrant or probable cause to search you at the border. This wikipedia article explains it as succinctly as possible:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_search_exception
This includes electronic materials. However, the Ninth Circuit recently pared back that ability, requiring reasonable suspicion for forensic examination of electronic equipment.
Bottom line: Don't have child porn on your laptop when crossing the border.

I think when asked what I was doing in _______ country my response is gonna be missionary work for my lord and savior.
I didn't have to deal with any of these things coming back from Asia they just ran my luggage through some thing in case I had fruit or food?
I do however only deal with girls around 18-22 and have a good bit of naked pics of younger looking girls from the USA on my laptop. How do you go about proving that these girls are legal if they find them and question you. I don't remember all their names and social security numbers.... This sounds like it could end up being a nightmare.
