The cheapest I've seen has been Norwegian airlines

http://www.norwegian.com/

I've seen fares as low as $150 one-way between New York and Europe (Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen). From there Ryanair and Easyjet can help with the rest of the journey.

@Petrosius

Consider flying with Icelandair when flying between Europe and North America. They do this thing called a "free stopover" where you get to stop in Reykjavik for a few days, before continuing to your destination.

Prices vary but you can get good deals, plus a free trip to Iceland!

Icelandair is cheap but goddamn if its the worst airline I've ever flown with. On the bright side, they often have good deals on one-way tickets, if that's what your looking for.
Ive heard good things about Norwegian's quality and prices. The negative side to Norwegian is that they don't have very many planes and no international partners. If one of their planes has a serious technical problem you are likely to be stuck somewhere for a day or 3.

But yea, those are definitely your cheapest options (Norwegian especially).

Great recommendation! Checking it out now, and the prices are pretty wild.

I made a really brief post a long time ago about using wikipedia to get cheap flights based on the city and airline.
Using Airline Hubs to fly cheaper

Whatever airport is closest to you...Look it up on wikipedia

Example. We all know Fort Lauderdale, and New Work are big Airline Hubs.
FLL Airport Wikipedia
Go to the airlines part of the wikipedia and it give you a list of the airlines that fly out of there

You can search manually or possible Control F (find) and type what city you want to go to.

If an airline flies there..it usually has extremely cheap flights there..

I got in a bind once and overstayed my time in europe and needed a flight out of the country that same week.
I did this and found Condor airline flew between FLL and Frankfurt.
I ended up paying like 480 dollar for a flight 5 days in advance.

I stayed a night in FLL and then flew home from there

Bottom line. Its not only a decent way to find budget airlines..but you could find where airlines fly to and from often

Interesting. I'm going to look into flights between my hometown and New York, then check out flight or EUrail prices and see if more time in-transit is worth the money saved.

Right now the cheapest round-trip flights to Rome from CVG + a layover are about $1,200.00

What you said is totally incorrect for the most part. I live in Iowa and often times its either cheaper (or within $100) to fly out of my little regional airport and connect in Chicago than it is to drive to O'Hare and fly out.

Now to take what you said a step further, and not waste time going to wikipedia, instead go to matrix.itasoftware.com. This is the master searcher. You can type in your city and search any airport within 500 miles in one fell swoop. The same goes for your destination. You cannot book through this site though, only find flights. Once I find a flight, I go to the airline's website to confirm that I can book it. I think go to hipmunk.com to see if I can find a better deal. The matrix even has a flexible date search. It really should be everyone's first stop.

If you are flexible when you travel make this your homepage: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mileage-run-deals-372/ Check it every morning and every night. They will post fare mistakes, cheap deals, etc. For example, I was on this forum at 11 pm last week and was able to snatch a flight from Chicago to Paris roundtrip for $600 due to a fare mistake that was posted here.

I believe this is catered to those living in Europe.

The USA site travelpirates.com (same company), hasn't been updated since August 2013.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I figured I'd try and help some people who are from North America.
