Games Of Thrones : Season 4

I had a vision in my mind of the most disappointing outcome possible for the trial by combat.
GOT blew it out of the water with something that will have me in a depression for the rest of the night.
Fuck.

I've read some of the books and knew how tonight's episode would go down and yet the lead-up made me feel so fucking hopeful. As if the show creators would totally do a surprise twist and change it up.

After 3.5 seasons I've been conditioned to expect these surprising outcomes and characters being eliminated for bad decisions.

I think this season's gone downhill since the first three.
It's moving at a much slower pace. It seems like there are new characters being introduced who are interesting but then disappear or die off in a couple episodes which makes you question what they're even there for.
perhaps it is reflective of the book, but it's getting too confusing with too many threads that don't lead anywhere, and the action is a lot slower. Plus, there's a lot less backstabbing and political maneuvering which was what made the first three seasons particularly interesting.
I've found myself looking forward to Silicon Valley every week moreso than Game of Thrones.

Its not just wanting the confession that cost him his life (when he had already won the fight).
He took his eyes off the mountain to exchange a flirtatious glance with his paramour just for a second. That's all the mountain needed.

I think the scene was unnecesarily horrifying. Not a single scene grossed me out in Spartacus, Saw or Hostel before. But this one was on a different level. It's mainly because he was such a loved character and it was so suddenly and brutally, caught the audience in complete surprise. I can't even rewatch it.
However, much respect to GoT and George RR Martin for daring to break every Hollywood cliche ever created. This is the only show on TV where the strong and the smart wins, not the good and the innocent.

It actually seemed pretty obvious that he was going to come to a bad end because of his hubris and then his anger, both of which distracted him from the task at hand.
These concepts seem to exist in one form across cultures, from Greek mythology to the seven deadly sins of Christianity to Eastern philosophy. There seems to be a lot of this in Game of Thrones, too.
In the classical Japanese martial arts (or those that still retain features and philosophical influences from them), there are certain concepts that deal with this:
Shi Kai (Four Sicknesses) that cloud the mind, specifically kyu, or surprise, and confusion (lack of connection). Related concepts are mushin, fudoshin and zanshin.
^^^ Yup, and if you recall it was the exact same situation in The Last Samurai. At the beginning when Tom Cruise is captured and about to be put to death, he capitalizes on the samurai's hubris and brutally stabs him.
But what hasn't been mentioned thus far is that both the samurai Tom Cruise killed and Prince Oberyn DESERVED to die. As said in The Last Samurai, "it was karma" meaning that they tainted what was supposed to be a pure and virtuous act with their egos. Especially in the case of Prince Oberyn where he is basically facing the embodied manifestation of pure evil, the last thing you do is turn an act of justice into a show of revenge.
