Once you finally get the movie you are constantly blinded by smart phones users texting in the movie, or some little brat kicking your seat. I have been in theatres where it was rated R and there is a bunch of babies crying in the theatre. Don't they have childcare and grandparents to help out with that? My father was threatened by this prick who kept texting during the movie. He went right up to my fathers face and was started to yell and threatened to attack him. The problem was he was a minority so if I beat him up, I would be charged with a hate crime and assault charge.

Another problem is if you watch a pg13 movie like a comic book movie it will often be flooded by 12-15 year olds. The most obnoxious age group. They talk loud, never stop talking, and constantly are moving around. Very solipsistic as well.

My city has vip theaters which serve alcohol so by law they can't have under drinking age customers in there. It costs a little more but you get the plush recliner seating, with less people per theater, you can order better food, for the experience and not having to deal with families and teens and pre teens it's worth the few bucks more to me. I guess I've been lucky regarding texting, it's not a huge issue around here, I've heard a phone go off in a movie and the guy scrambled to shut it off and another time I saw a russian girl texting away all previews and then the movie started, I was 7-8 rows back from her so I didn't notice till my date said is she texting, so I was gonna yell out shut off your phone which usually gets cheers and makes people power down but a big ole canadian girl sitting next to her grabbed her phone and threw it against the wall, thats when I realized girl was russian, she got up and had the strong accent as she said wtf, grabbed all her food and clothes and shattered cell phone and stormed out, never came back.

There is only a handful I do enjoy.
Besides that, they are a waste of time and typically predictable which is why reading is superior.

I was obsessed with foreign films for a while and was watching at least one a week. Some are good and some are horrible. Like so bad that I fell asleep or had to turn it off. I would be suspicious if someone acted like they're all unique and great pieces of work. Only a handful stood out to me but those were really, really good and I just sat there and disected them when they finished.

I do like all types of movies but most of what Hollywood puts out is bullshit so you have to dig deeper. I think I hate the faggot, liberal loving indie movies even more though.

I don't care for movie theaters at all. They cost too much and waste way too much of my time on advertisements and previews for chick flicks and other stupid crap. I rarely watch movies, but when I do I like to watch them at home where I'm in control. I recently watched Star Trek: Into Darkness on my laptop. I paused it as often as I deemed appropriate, and even left it paused overnight when my girlfriend got home to finish it up in the morning.

It took me about 6 hours to get through the new Hunger Games, and I'm fine with that.

But with few exceptions, I have little use for what comes out of Hollywood.

I just watched "The Wolf of Wall Street." Meandering story. Uninteresting characters. Pointless movie.

I would have been better off spending that time doing push ups and studying Russian vocabulary flashcards.

The Wolf of Wall Street was just Scorsese giving Jordan Belfort a blowjob in the form of a film. That story could have, and should have been told well. If I hadn't been with someone, I would have walked out in the middle. It was 3 hours I won't get back. Its only redeeming quality was Margot Robbie.

Same. Glad I'm not the only one. Even my mates who are pretty switched on seemed to like it. I would have had a better time walking out and sitting on the floor outside the room staring at a wall while waiting for my buddy to finish watching it.

Saw The Wolf of Wall Street this week. I'll refrain from calling it a terrible film, though I'll agree that it was mostly uninteresting and pointless. Scorcese could have, and should have, made a much greater film.

I was hoping for a more serious film, perhaps a cross of Scorcese's own Casino and Oliver Stone's Wall Street, but no. It's mostly as Capitan Peligroso says, Scorcese blowing Jordan Belfort in the form of film.

The body acting always sets me off the story telling and plot, i spend the whole movie time thinking of backstage and how the actor is expressing himself instead of focusing on the character

The last movie i saw that really framed together in one whole single story, without distractions : What's eating Gilbert grape . Johnny Depp does a good job as a miserable teenager stuck in a small city where nothing changes, son of morbidly obese widowed mother of a broken family, but is his retarded brother (played by a young Dicaprio) that steals the shows, what a master of body language

I love watching a great TV series or a good film, but I'd rather surf the net I think. I'm very much an information junkie.

I love movies. But I couldn't find any thread on "good movies" to post this in. The search engine was not helpful.

Saw the movie "Bloody Sunday" last night, by Paul Greengrass. A retelling of the events that led to the shootings of a number of unarmed civilians in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1972. An amazing production, authentic and harrowing. You feel like you're right in the middle of a shitstorm, which is what the director intended.

It reminded me a lot of the events that led up to what has been called "The Boston Massacre" of 1770. A crowd taunts a group of armed soldiers who then open fire.

I'd like to know the reaction of any Englishmen to this movie. I thought it was balanced and informative, as well as entertaining.

And now that I think about it, I just now thought it was odd that we don't seem to have many (or any?) forum members from Ireland. Many guys from all the other English-speaking countries (Canada, Australia, US) but no Irishmen. I'm a bit surprised about that.

Film i was recently pleased with was Stalker (1979) by legendary Soviet director Tarkovsky.

Film is quite long and almost exhausting to watch, action is quite dragged out. Yet, the story is very very deep and haunting. Indeed some deep shit. Visuals/photography and soundtrack are also great.

Film actually has a lot of lore around it. It had actually predicted the Chernobyl disaster in a way (since it also created forbidden zone of contamination guarded by army). Also, many of the crew members, including Tarkovsky himself died of similar sort of cancer that is now widely believed to be acquired from radiation at the chemical plant where film was shot, which also puts some irony.

My honest verdict - entire film is worth it's conclusion, however, be prepared to sit through a lot of quite slow and dragged out action on the screen, which might be quite more interesting if you also enjoy the visuals in the film, and not only the action, and if you are also interested in Russian language.

I still watch films, but mainly ones made before 2000. Most films today don't look interesting enough to waste 2 hours of my life on. But there have been a few exceptions. I thought The Wolf of Wall Street was a lot of fun. And I enjoyed watching all the shit in Man of Steel get blowed up. But none of these compare to the greatness that came out in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Film is dying.

Didn't expect to see Orson Wells as the avatar for the start of this.

Watching way less newer films that ever.

Will see Under the Skin soon.

I was a big film fan when I was younger.

But I got burned out.

Even the classics hold little appeal for me now. Much less the rubbish that is churned out today.

I am a fan of Orson Welles more as a person than a film director.

He just seemed like the coolest person in the world on those old chat shows. Check out this anecdote:

Just search "movie", by thread titles only.

These are the main movie threads with lots of great contributions:

I should add that another cool thing about Orson Welles is that he had a strong interest in magic.

As do I.

I have no problem with film as a medium but almost everything is so crap that I cant stand it. I feel like that South Park episode where Stan turns 10 and everything seems like crap.

I'm guessing by saying films your not talking about movies but films. I agree normally I don't like them but recently saw a spanish movie called Una Noche which I thought was pretty good. About these two guys and a girl trying to escape cuba.

I used to like films a lot when I was younger but now it has started to become deja vu.

One starts to see the same sort of patterns in films which makes them predictable.
I don't know if it's just a mark of wisdom or age or the fact that film directors are general plebs who just crank out more crap nowadays than ever.
Also I liked films and cartoons when I was younger because I wasn't an adult and therefore I couldn't have the sort of adventures I fantasised about.

But now as an adult, we can do what we want and hence, less need to watch films since we can actually 'act out' those roles.

It's a bit like watching porn. The need isn't there to watch if you are able to act out your nastiest passions with a varied array of sexy lizards. Although you do have those who enjoy to live vicariously through others.

I just watched a great foreign film: "L'affaire Farewell" The movie is about a little-known spy scandal with huge consequences. Basically, it resulted in the Soviet Union losing the bulk of its spy network in the West, hastening the fall of the Soviet Union.

Agreed Chinatown was good for a one time viewing but its a mystery why its loved as much as it is.

But Blade Runner was flat out boring to the extent that I would rather stare at the wall for 2 hours than have to sit through that film again.

Dang! Chinatown is a quintessential American film. One of the best screenplays ever written. Books about writing screenplays always discuss that movie. The hype is that the script is a work of art. The acting was the icing on the cake. Definitely in the top thirty American films of all time.

Bladerunner was a gem, as well. IMO, Ridley Scott is one of the top living directors. His body of work is outstanding. The Duelists. Alien. Bladerunner. Gladiator. Black Hawk Down. American Gangster.

Of course, like all art it is subjective to the viewer. [Image: smile.gif]

I did not like how the future was depicted. It was to 80s-ish and seemed corny. His apartment, flying cars, cigarettes that are like fat joints, the buildings.

Harrison Ford did a really nice job. So did blondie and the cat woman. Maybe I need to watch it again.. I fell a sleep halfway and finished the following week.
