Must Have Experiences, Must See Places, Around the World
01-31-2014, 11:17 AM
I noticed recently that the of the original 7 Wonders Around the World, only the pyramid of Giza is still in existence.
The "new" 7 wonders has some OK stuff but leaves out places like Ankor Wat in Cambodia.
I want this thread to be the place to go when it comes to "Things you have to see or do before you die"
In that vein, I've got a couple (in no particular order).
Ankor Wat - Ancient Ruins in Cambodia - I'm told they are breath taking
Taking one of the week long Inca Hikes into Machu Picchuz (Thanks Maledefined for the idea)
Drinking Auyascha in the Amazon
Heads at Easter Island
Edit - different dishes of food should be included as well

Perhaps slightly off-topic, but:
Being a white guy in Korea.
Often as white, English-speaking guys we're accommodated in many countries and are seen as the highest rung of society due to imperialistic tendencies. We rarely experience racism.
Korea is arguably one of the only places where you will feel like you're on the bottom rung of society as a white man.
Weirdly, I absolutely loved my Korea experience, it was a real eye-opener, and I recommend it as a 'must-do' for anyone

Snort cocaine with Ukranian hookers.
Get shitfaced in Iran.
Take part in a tribal dance in Papa New Guinea.
Get assaulted by an Asian ladyboy.
Taste human flesh.

I know the pyramids get a lot of attention, and they are cool, but the Abu Simbel temples in Egypt are even more impressive.
Leighton, is your experience tempered by the fact that you were teaching English? Suppose you had a good job at Samsung instead...would it be different? (don't want to thread jack Fisto's thread, so maybe you can just answer in a more appropriate place)
I'll add one: hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, Turkey. Amazing.

I think it was more tainted by the fact i wasn't in Seoul. A cool guy is a cool guy, regardless of his occupation. But yeah, i was very wary about posting as the Korea situation is a contentious issue
Though I was rejected from clubs in Seoul multiple times on the basis of 'having a white face' (Im a 7 who dresses very well)
usually the guys who have lived there long-term enter war with those who have only visited short term (or guys who are Korean, or are part Korean)
If anyone wishes to discuss the topic please bring it up in the the travelers lounge, as i really don't want to derail this thread. Even if I sound like Im spouting the highest order of bull shit, quote me there, call me out and we can discuss there.
So yeah. Ignore me. Describe your recommendations:

this thread is a great idea that i wish happened more on the forum. its fun talking about clubbing and gaming, but my most rewarding exoeriences arent either. for example, i just spent the chinese new year with a bunch of old dudes from beijing talking about growing up in the CR while drinking bai jiu (stuff sucks). itll stick out more in my head in 10 years than the clubs will

I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams, so why are you sharing all this information with me?

@fisto: great wall is sweet, but I'd say zhang jia jie is even better (floating mountains that the world from avatar is based on), if you go in the winter with few tourists and a light dusting of snow, amazing

I've heard such great things about the cruises/wildlife experience out there.
Awesome spot to snorkel too.
I also think seeing Komodo Island out in Indonesia would be sick
Diving in that area also.

Co-sign on Saga's post.
Petra in Jordan is fuckin' awesome. Indiana Jones shit.
Istanbul in itself is a wonder. Haggia Sophia is sick.
The Pyramids in Egypt are cool. Actually going inside a pyramid was quite memorable. I only checked out Giza and the surrounding area but I hear Luxor (down further south along the Nile) is where it's really impressive. You can take a Nile cruise that hits all the important ancient sites.
Go to Morocco and visit Marrakesh's old city.
Machu Picchu in Peru is a must for South America.

I've seriously re-evaluted my travel plans recently, and places like these are peaking my interest. You'll learn more in places like these than in a museum or ancient history. These spots are off the beaten path, aren't advertised, and speak volumes of humanity. The challenge is the language barrier and possibly weather to get there. I'd lock down a cool chick in each place to take me on a weekend. Just getting to any of these places would make up a good story. My best ones comes from getting as far away from tourist paths as possible.
1st pic- The Kerry Way walking path
2nd pic- Fishing lodge on a lake in Germany.
3rd pic- Prypiat, Ukraine. (spelling)
4th pic- Panvel, India
5th pic- House of the Bulgarian Communist Party
6th pic- Abandoned hotel in Colombia, near waterfalls.
7th pic- Gulliver Park, Japan
8th pic- S.S. America, Canary Islands
9th pic- Abandoned mining island, Japan
I'll break it down further into 1 syllable words so fisto can read it.
