Uzhogord/Uzhhorod
Uzhgorod is a city in western Ukraine on the Slovakia border and a short distance from Hungary, with Poland and Romania not far behind. This part of Ukraine is Catholic country. The city mainly supports the surrounding mountain farms, and is an inland port for freight traveling in from the EU. Also it’s a college town like Lviv but 1/7 the size. The city center looks more like you are in Hungary than being the typical architecture you associate with Ukraine. It’s a nice town that is really compact. You have all the amenities you need in walking distance no matter what part of the city you are in.
Getting There: It’s easy to get there from Kiev by direct flight. The only problem is you have to buy the ticket through a travel agency or at the airport. The tickets cost anywhere from $75-$150 one way depending on timing. The other way is to take the train from Kiev or Lviv. The distance from Kiev is 16 hours. The distance from Lviv is 6 hours.
Women: The women are probably the most open you will find in Ukraine. It’s a different scenario than the rest of Ukraine. Here they actually smile. You have one problem with this scenario. They smile and are open, but they are not as attractive as their eastern counterparts. But you will see better in Uzhgorod than its neighbors, Hungary and Slovakia. You will see a couple of stunners walk by around the city centre but not as many as other cities around Ukraine. Most of the girls that go to school in Uzhgorod come from the surrounding mountain and farm communities. Unfortunately they bring their style with them. It reminds of the time I went to university in Kentucky. I get the same vibe with these girls. Girls at universities in Kentucky are loving, good looking, always wanting to have a good time, but the style is not that great. They smile, say hello, and were feminine. Have no idea how it is today. Me coming from the northeast US I had to adjust to all the girls smiling and open to conversation in Kentucky. They are nice country girls that will take care of you. They look great but if they dressed better they will go up a point or two. A couple of years later around 25 you start to see the fast aging. That’s Uzhgorod women in a nutshell. The Kentucky of Ukraine. They dress better than Kentucky, but not compared to the rest of Ukraine.
Gaming wise it’s very easy. Also you have the many University girls in town during the school year. So pick away.
Accommodation: I stayed on Pidharskia Vulytsia. For the one bedroom apartment it was only $25 a night. I have posted before on how to find an apartment. Just follow those links.
Language: You do have some Russian penetration. Most girls here speak Ukrainian and also you can get by with English. The younger crowd here does speak English. Out of all the places in Ukraine I would say Uzhgorod has more English speakers by percentage.
Race Issues: I did get more stares than usual. Most of that is due to being the one of the only black guys they may come across every year(homogenous city). So I had no worries. I was profiled in the train station. One undercover cop came up to me and asked for my passport, asked me a couple of questions then let me go. Then 20 minutes later a regular cop came up to me and asked to see my passport. Then he looked at my passport and was surprised to see I was American. Then he let me go. Other than that nothing happened in the city. Everyone was very receptive and welcoming, instead of the stares from the old farmers that rolled into town.
Uzhhorod is a good place for a person who wants to settle down for a couple of months to deescalate from the rat race. The advantages are you are right on the border with Slovakia. You have the Poland, Hungary, and Romania borders less than an hour drive or train ride away in each direction. Plus you have the mountains and it’s a very inexpensive city. You could easily live a good life on $1000 a month. The women are not the best but are better than western women. If you want a short term girl to take care of your needs for the couple of weeks or months then go for it.
