Yes, the recent drop in crime well documented. In the book Freakonomics, the author attributes the crime reduction to Roe vs Wade. Unwanted babies started being aborted after Roe v Wade, and if they weren't they'd grow up to be criminals. It took about 20-30 years after R v W before crimes stats started dropping.

I'm not sure I agree with this, but its an interesting theory.

When I first began to read this thread, it was difficult for me to restrain my feelings. Some measure of relief came today when I read this article, about hate crime charges against some human scum who sucker-punched a random innocent man:

Previous commenters have pointed out that, despite the horrors described in this thread, today is the "safest" time to be alive. There is much truth to this statement. We should not allow our perspectives to be warped by stories of barbarism, criminality, and amorality.

Nevertheless, this position overlooks the fact that the conduct described in this thread--randomly and wantonly assaulting an innocent person for fun--is deeply disturbing. Even in third world societies wracked by institutional violence and civil war (Somalia, Afghanistan, etc) one would be hard pressed to find this sort of amoral conduct by youths. It would not happen because families, clan structures, and religious sanctions in Somalia and Afghanistan are very strong. Anyone trying this sort of thing would be killed by a relative or friend of the victim.

As it should be.

This behavior is so disturbing because it points out America's basic failure in rearing youths with a basic sense of moral compass. With a basic sense of decency. Both black and white America are facing this deep moral crisis. This is the end result of decades of refusing to discipline youths, of refusing to instill moral values, of deliberately dismantling the one edifice that gives strength and permanence to a moral code: religion. We are reaping what this society has sown. The onset of barbarism is here, before our eyes.

Order must be restored first, at all costs, before we have any namby-pamby talk about "rights" or sociological discussions of class, race, etc. These are simply dodges to distract attention from the sickening conduct that is going on. Ferocious punishments need to be meted out, despite all the shouting that will naturally be let loose. It is a great pity that corporal punishments are not allowed any more.

In colonial America, the following corporal punishments were consistently applied, and gave real meaning to the word "punishment" and "shame":

1. The bilboes. Inherited from old Spain.
2. The stocks or pillory. Gave real meaning to public shaming
3. The scold's bride. An iron helmet of sorts, with a plate to be stuck in the victim's mouth. Used for punishing women with vicious mouths.
4. The ducking stool. Used for women who caused trouble, or for men who beat their wives. Couples to quarreled too much would be tied together and ducked together.
5. The wooden horse. This was a wooden contraption studded with nails. The offender would be forced to sit on it, until the nails wreaked havoc on his flesh.

The problem is that youths today have no fear of punishment.

Charging the perps with hate crimes, which they very well seem to be is the best solution for this. They're stupid enough to post this online anyway, they already charged themselves.

Downtown L.A. was like night of the living dead around that same era. Nothing but crackheads roaming the streets like zombies. You got the fuck out after sundown. Now I go down there and there are white girls walking poodles at night.

I grew up in New England, and remember visiting places in Boston and Salem that were the sites of colonial punishments. Call me a sadistic bastard if you want, but I really believe that some of these old school punishments, consistently applied, would be far more efficient in keeping order than our mild and mollycoddling punishments of today.

Imagine a thought experiment. Would these youths dare to commit random, vicious acts of violence against complete strangers, if they knew their eyes would be gouged out, or their ears cut off? Certainly not.
Here is more information about colonial American punishments:

1. Bilboes. This was a device invented by the Spanish for the purpose of restraining captured British sailors. It was later adopted by the British and found its way to America. It was a long iron bar with two sliding shackles, one for each leg. The bar was connected to a shackle, which was chained to a post about 6 feet high. The victim was forced to lie on the ground with his feet up in the air. Very effective, we are told. Governor John Winthrop brought this punishment from England.

2. The pillory or "stretch neck". The criminal stood on a platform with his head and hands protruding from holes in planking. This was used in Boston until 1803. This had the added benefit of subjecting the criminal to the jeers and ridicule of passers-by.

3. The stocks. Only difference between the pillory and the stocks was that in the stocks, the person was seated and had his hands and feet thrust through the openings. Interesting story: the man who built the stocks in Boston in 1639, Edward Palmer, was himself put in them for fraudulently overcharging the city of Boston for his work.

4. Branding and mutilations. Habitual drunkards could be branded with the letter "D" for drunkenness. Branding with these letters was possible: B was for uttering blasphemy, V for being vicious to others, R for being a "rogue". For serious felonies like burglary, murder, manslaughter, or rape, the offender was branded with a hot iron, among other punishments. Some of those convicted of the Boston Massacre were sentenced to be branded.

5. Ducking stool. The purpose of this punishment was to deter women who were "scolding women", or big-mouthed shrews. They were called "chyderers". Wife beaters could also be subjected. I love the fact that couples who publicly quarreled too much could both be tied together and punished by being plunged into cold water. Wonderful domestic violence cure.
In 1672, Governor Bellingham had a law passed that ordered anyone "convicted of rayling or scolding shall be gagged or sett in a ducking stoole and dipt over head and ears three times in some convenient place of fresh or salt water."

6. Wooden horse. A device shaped like a horse, but with nails protruding from its back where they could do the most damage. A servant of William Marsh of Apple Island was forced to ride the wooden horse after stealing some possessions from his employer. Paul Revere, as commanding officer at Castle Island in Boston, sentenced a Continental soldier to ride the "Wooden horse for a quarter of an hower with a musket on each foot."

Physical punishments:

In 1631 the Boston General Court ruled that "Philip Ratcliffe shalle be whipt, have his eares cutt off, fined 40 pounds, and banished from this jurisdiction, for uttering slanderous and malicious speeches against the Government."

From women, the "brank" or "scold's bride" was a fearsome punishment, a "brydle for a curste queane." An iron helmet that fitted over the woman's head, that had a flat metal mouthpiece that could be thrust into the woman's mouth. This instrument of punishment was meant to deter women who refused to stop speaking ill of others, or of verbally abusing people.

This was a common warning placed at the scene of public punishments:

"All ye who see the State of Me, Think of the Glass [hourglass] that Runs for Thee."

BTW, I did live in L.A. for over 20 years and am all familiar with the tribulations of living in a more mixed society. Quite frankly speaking I have come to believe it's a bad idea and it's not because of racism - I do not feel hatred about any race or any people in particular - only selected individuals. Back when in Germany I grew up in a fairly homogenous society and I don't recall having to deal with these same damn issues over and over and over and over again - every day in my life! Just turn on the news - it's the same shit every day - black people this - white people that - Asians this - Mexicans that. And then at the same time they keep selling us the benefits of multiculturalism and embracing gay culture. Fuck - how does that make any sense?

Bottom line is this: Socialists systems do not cause this type of behavior. As usual you yanks are not seeing the forest for the trees and are simply attempting to pin a problem onto your favorite pet peeve. Do you really think that an integrated society in which poorer families would not only receive food assistance but also a wide range of education options plus help and acceptance from wide ranges of society would breed such young punks? If you do believe that then I cannot help you frankly.

The problem is social and intellectual neglect and that is a multi-dimensional problem which can be rooted back to a host of cultural problems in the United States and some other countries. An increasing polarization between the poor and rich is one aspect of it but there is more to this than meets the eye.

Also, about the violence part. I have no problem with violence - it's part of human nature and boys will be boys. However, sucker punching innocent people on the street is absolutely unacceptable and should result in stringent disciplinary action. Not jail time - but community service as an opportunity to acquire some sense of empathy. Which is what these kids lack. It's not just a problem of violence - once again many of you are simply looking at the symptom but not at the underlying condition. Ask yourself what drives someone to actually wanting to do something like this? Now, even considering lower IQs (and don't get fucking call me a racist - that's not the point) a balanced healthy human being does not feel the need to pounce at hapless passer-byes. Obviously something is horribly wrong with these kids and we ought to ask ourselves as to what.

Answer - society as a whole is broken. Raging feminism is only one aspect of this. Corruption is another. An effective plutocracy as our current form of government in the U.S. is yet another. I could go on about this all day: failing infrastructure (i.e. bridges, tunnels, buildings), failing economy, failing education system, failing political process, failing media, failing social dynamics, failing ecological system, etc.. the list is long.

I live in Spain right now which is a perfect example of why your theories are flawed. We have over 50% unemployment among people below 25 years of age here. Do we have problems with petty crime here? Absolutely! And who's committing it? Not the white kids - by a far majority they are smoking dope and are hanging out with their friends - peacefully. It's the North Africans and the Romas (not the Romanians - per an earlier thread - hehe).

So to a certain degree it is a race issue - yes. But it's also a multi-culti problem. White kids in the Western hemisphere are being feminized into being peaceful and non-violent while they are permitted to benefit from economic growth and success of their host countries. Minorities are relegated to the sidelines and they don't have much to lose - so they decide to embrace a 'ghetto gang culture' which according to the MTV brainwashing is glorious and allows them to achieve some level of success and economic rewards (i.e. money and bitches).

Back in the days a gang of black kids knocking out a white kid would have resulted in a black kid floating in the river a few days later. But if I go out to seek revenge I find myself in prison these days as the feminist laws enforced on me do not allow me to fight back without huge risk to my standing as a citizen and the economic future of my family. The dumb ass ghetto hustler on the other hand doesn't give a rat's rectum, so he/she operates from a position of 'nothing left to lose'. So it's a combination of issues here - we whites are basically handcuffed into a weak position while minority groups are coddled but at the same time kept on the sidelines. So the same events keep repeating themselves. Plus it doesn't help that white kids are constantly being brainwashed as viewing themselves as weak.

How do we fix this? Fuck - we can't. It will require a complete reset of the current Western system. As I outlined above - it's broken on many many fronts and all of them contribute to events like this. School shootings - similar underlying issues. Road rage - same underlying issues. Wall street corruption - same underlying issues.

Sorry for the rant - I hope it stimulates a broader view on related issues. You guys are all just focusing on the symptoms, not the underlying disease.

Unfortunately this is largely due to privatization. In the U.S. even prisons are a for-profit industry. It's actually pretty sad and one wonders how many of those people may be normal functioning citizens had they been raised in a different country with a functional social order.

The proliferation of the inmate population in California is actually the resort of lobbying by the powerful California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA). At the federal level, the percentage of inmates in private prisons is higher, but that is because a higher percentage of illegal aliens go into private than pubic prisons. These illegals are thought not to need a lot of programing for rehabilitation so they are wearhoused in privately managed facilities, rather than the feds building facilities for foreign population that may fluctuate given political considerations like "immigration reform." The feds also lease bed space in Cuba for non-US inmates.

This is basically like a big tub of water for horses to drink and stuff. He talked to her about being a bitch, she gave him an attitude. He dunked her head in the tank for a few seconds. They talked a little more. He dunked her a few more times until she promised to improve her behavior. They live in a small town.

This is basically the same thing as "The Ducking Stool" that you described.

This happened last month.

If an American parent did this they would go to jail.
