Athlone - Ireland - Help
01-15-2014, 08:08 AM
Hey guys
I don't know if it the right place to ask for help, but, I received a job opportunity to work in Athlone, Ireland and I don't know anything about there.
It seems like a very small town, however, looks pretty nice.
Do you guys have even been there? Did you like it? Is it a good place to game, party and so on? Or I'll have to travel every weekend to Dublin just to have a chance to do something? What you can tell me about there?
Thank you very much.

It's not a bad spot.
About an hour drive from either Galway or Dublin.
It has an Institute of Technology there which is pretty much like a college or university so there's probably a party scene but I haven't heard much about it. It does stuff like Science and Humanities and such but they probably head to Galway and stay for the night.
In which case I'd probably suggest you get a place in Galway and commute to Athlone but that's two hours out of your day (There and Back) and maybe not worth the investment.

I used to work in Athlone, but it was some time ago
As the previous poster said, as midlands town go, this one isn't the worst, but it's certainly not on a par with Galway or Dublin in terms of gaming possibilities or chicks
It's mostly a native Irish population, I'd say 80% and as we all know, Irish chicks are mostly nothing to write home about, but you will also get some FSU/EE women and Spanish/Brazilians, although they are less likely to be out in the pubs and clubs partying
There's a club in the 'Prince of Wales' hotel, where you should have no trouble pulling Irish 5s and perhaps a 6, but anything above that will have a b1tch shield
For a place with a decent pint of Guinness, Sean's bar is worth a visit, it also attracts a few foreign/tourist chicks as it's touted as 'the oldest pub in Ireland' (as do about twenty other pubs in Ireland), also it's beside the river which can be nice in the summertime, that said, it can be a real sausagefest as the evening goes on, so go there early and then bounce to one of the late bars or clubs

Depending on where your living now it is a relatively small town, but not so much that you would struggle to find things to do. It is not generally known as a hot spot for it's nightlife but that's not to say there isn't any. As far as game is concerned as is usually the rule with being a foreigner you will stand out from the herd and being Brazilian will stand to you positively.
A small side note, not to put you off but be ready for a serious lack of sunshine and some casual racism thrown your way. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying people will harass you or anything of the like it's just that Irish people are known for having a thick skin and not taking insults to heart, if you can accept this you will be fine.
If you do decide to move over than dia duit from me to you.

Never gone out in Athlone but almost got stabbed while queuing in Supermacs for a chicken burger once on the way back from Galway.
Never been back.

A friend of mine is from Athlone. From what he describes, it's fine enough but nothing special. Basically a good place to make some good friends and save money. Dublin's right there so you can live your social life there, if you so choose.
I get the impression that it's more closed-minded and racist than other parts of Ireland. The women are probably pretty rubbish.
