I agree with that but hate wires and other clutter more. I'm going all in one.

Here's a quick search on Frys:

$1K for a tower. More than you need but it would blaze and you won't have to upgrade anything in the near future with 16g or ram coming out of the gate. This is half as much as Mac.
That tower is 1k the entire Mac is 1299. Why would I ever need more memory?

To future-proof yo self! The same way a laptop with 4gb 3 years ago used to be the standard, nowadays it's slow. Photoshop/Dreamweaver needs 6GB alone.

Macs have viruses. It takes a minute to do something on a mac that it takes me seconds on a PC, and I've used PC's 17 out of my 21 years.

I'm not sure about the monster high incidents changing, most are for PCs but some may be for Macs.

Edit:
With more memory: you can see more porn links to send to Ali, more girls to pipeline on OKC, and more RVF tabs to lightly troll on.

I did that this weekend. They both seemed good.

If you can get the software you want on both then just go with a Mac. It sounds like you want to make the switch over to the lefties.

I think you get a free beret with purchase.

I'm a software developer and I switched my work computer from Windows PC to fully loaded MacBook Pro about a year ago. I really like it, mainly since it's a UNIXy system and native command line is great for developing anything outside of .NET. Also the SSD drive and i7 processor makes it screaming fast.

The thing is - do you really need a desktop Mac? Seems unnecesarilly limiting. You can connect external monitors and mouse/keyboard to a macbook and have the best of both worlds. With my MB pro I use a 3x 19" monitors setup at work and 1x 26" monitor setup when I work from home and it's been working great. You can connect any monitor to a Macbook and they are dirt cheap - you can buy 26" under $200, 23" under $100 these days.
The thing will never leave my desk so one monitor is fine. I want to tie my credit card machine into it as well, fax, print.

Find out how hard it is to upgrade those all in ones. Like Cattle Hustler said, go ahead and pay up for a fast system now and avoid future upgrades. It's worth it to have something blazing fast for the first year of so, instead of going cheap and having a computer that limps along from the go and needs constant attention.

  1. Using the copy/paste/cut feature, in addition to Tab+Alt. That kept me focused like a cat with a yarn ball.
  2. Menu File Settings. Fuggedaboutit!
  3. Properly right clicking, it's a hit or miss thing with the one button mouse.
  4. Programs UI.
  5. Menu/Task bar.

Do you think the two operating systems work the same? Just trying to add files to ITunes took me some time to figure out.
It would take me a week to figure that out either way.

El Mech, I just made a build for you on Amazon.

You can get a local PC store to build it for you, or someone you trust.

Check it out.

The monitor costs a lot of money because it's high-res. You can also get a $120 monitor now and wait till holiday season for some really nice monitor deals.

Bad-ass list, he could also change the monitor for two Dell 22-inchers. Once you go dual, you never go back.

He could x out the SSD drive and expensive monitor and keep it in a better price range, but yeah that is a bad ass config. Bump the Ram to 16G and you're golden.

This thread is reminding me of game threads where theory is being debated when instead actual approaches should be made. Approach that Mac. Open up with VISA/AmEx/Master Card. Close that deal. Bang away for two weeks, and next if unsatisfied. Shit's not that hard.

Amex gives you an extra year of warranty protection. But I get Apple Care anyway.

Just get a macbook pro, the cheapest model and you'll be good to go. Plenty of room for photos, videos, etc. You don't have to worry about building or customizing, everything in a nice neat little package. If you need more space...docking station + monitor + keyboard/mouse. You'll be a highly portable international businessman.

I'm pretty well versed on PCs and have used them for a while, I just find basic tasks much more intuitive on a mac and I think its worth the money.

El Mech, how do you plan on hooking up the office? Payment gateway software, inventory, bar scan, invoices... Do you have automatic inventory reordering? Shit, if you hook it up right, you will be able to stop working and finish up that broadway musical you've been writing about trolling Neil.

By the way, you can run Windows on a Mac with Bootcamp. It's funny because you still got a Mac Keyboard/Mouse. Macs load too.

Yup, Alt + Tab = Switches screens
Ctrl + Tab = Switches tabs

Macs don't have a menu/star button but rather a row of programs on the bottom.

Instead of minimize/close/open/expand on the right, you have a green/yellow/red circles on the LEFT side of the screen.

The menu/file/settings/etc row that's on top of most programs is different in some mac programs.

Program's layouts are different, like above. You will find settings in different places and icons in different places. Things are better now that Office has a Mac version

PC: Ctrl + X = cut; Ctrl + C = Copy; Ctrl + V = paste
Macs: Command or apple button with another letter

If you knew how to do something on Windows, you will have to find the "mac way" to do it on a mac.

The virus thing happens when someone opens stuff on emails or downloads stuff from games (hi moviestarplanet and monster high) [Image: hamster2.gif] . What anti-virus do you use? Create a "guest" account for visitors...it limits their ability to download stuff.

Give the mac a try, someone said you can try it for 2 weeks free. If you're not happy, return it.

Edit I'm running on some random machine from 2004 running Pentium 4 with 1GB of memory and a 40GB hard drive. Top that!

Should I switch to Mac?

It took me a looooooooong time to see the light (at least the light of my personal opinion!) Having worked in finance, it goes without saying that I've spent decades in the PC camp (my first PC was in 1983, 9 grand for 256k RAM, two floppy drives, a daisy-wheel printer and Lotus 123 - which had just come out in the first quarter of that year). My situation was complicated by the fact that I'm also a composer and photographer, and for the longest time the best music/digital editing software were only available on Mac. I made do with what I could use on a PC - using music software like Sonar and eventually the PC version of Photoshop, etc.

It was the process of composing that brought me to the highest level of PC frustration. Mix a "tossed green salad" of DAW software, 3rd party plug-ins and assorted interfaced-hardware...welcome to interrupt-hell, crash city, transient bugs and lost creativity due to having to deal with an onslaught of technical issues that would rear its ugly head at the most inopportune times...like recording sessions. Shit that worked for months would suddenly not work, a new plug-in would cause others to crash or not function properly, etc. And don't even get me started on the vulnerability issues...I eventually took my "creative box" OFF the Internet so that I wouldn't risk being hit by some virus despite my best efforts to protect myself. That in turn created a logistic nightmare to manage licenses for expensive music software and updates offline.

It took a little app called Screenflow to get me to switch over to the Apple Kool-Aid. It could do what I'd been attempting to do on a PC for years - capturing smooth visualizations of music in a high level audio format (into a .mov). I told my affluent younger sis that I wanted to bring some tracks up to her house (she's always been a big MAC person) and run them through Screenflow. She turned around and surprised my by buying me a fully-loaded 17" MacBook Pro in April 2011. I immediately ported over all of my visual art (photography, digital video and 3D modeling) to it. I was BLOWN away by:

- the ease of software installation
- the continuity of the installs and programs
- the stability...it RARELY crashes
- the way different music plug-ins behave with one another...zero conflicts!

That in November of last year, I took the plunge - converting my music studio to Mac in the form of a gnarly 12-core MacPro with 32 GB RAM and 8 TB of storage. Getting everything to behave properly was a bit more difficult (had to bring a Logic/Mac geek in to solve the more arcane install problems) - but now that everything is in order?

STABILITY CITY! I'm not seeing crashes, I'm not having transient bullshit...when I want to compose, I flip that bitch on, and compose. Was it more expensive? Hell yeah - but well worth not having to put up with annoying Windows behavior, etc.!

The only thing that's bad with that is that if Windows gets corrupt there's no way to recover since you can''t boot it into safe mode or something like that. Happened to a few computers here that was running XP on some mac minis.

Yeah, taking off the SSD and Monitor would save him a bunch of cash. Good PCs are going nowadays for cheap.

Have you tried AVG? I use AVG+Malwarebytes, VLC to play movies and the USB version of CC. Avast was too spammy for me.
