That laugh is hilarious. It's an sonic trainwreck, yet it's growing on me. I love the fact that her laugh takes a few milliseconds to properly *wind* up, like she's lining up all the necessary gears, it's so unusual. The best analogy I can draw is to your preparation in the groundstrokes, setting up footwork, rotating your body, adjusting your grip etc. in tennis, before you make the shot.

It's endearing in its own way.

She's interesting though because even though she embodies feminism, she's not a feminist and she's said that she thinks feminists have a chip on their shoulder. Food for thought.

Feminists don't like her because she has made negative comments about feminism, didn't take maternity leave and has made decisions based on equality rather than giving women perks that men don't get.

Someone said she has never coded and is under qualified for her job. She has a master's in computer science from Stanford so she has coded, she has worked mostly with men, she has distanced herself from feminists and people in the industry know she was put in charge of some of Google's most important projects.

Women get an advantage in the tech industry because there are so few of them. Of course feminists say they are discriminated against but we know that is bullshit. I can't say that Mayer hasn't had advantages but I'm not going to hate on anyone who criticizes feminism and appears to be very qualified for their job.

Actually, not taking maternity leave seems in line with feminism.

imo her remarks against feminism are just because she doesn't want to be associated with the negativity that feminism represents. In other words, it's just a PR tactic.

I think she is one of the few women that knows how to think for herself instead of following the herd. Masters in CS from Stanford requires some pretty high level logic and reasoning skills. I think she knows that being a woman has been a net positive for her so she isn't going to be hypocrite by endorsing feminism.

Then again maybe I hate Sheryl Sandberg so much that I can only see the positives in Mayer since they are so different.

She's not taking maternity leave but there's a nursery/child-care facility.....next to her office. She can see her kid anytime she wants and no one can grill her about it.

Man, I get confused about SS and MM all the time. Also, it's a coincidence that both of their initials posses the same letter twice.

This bothers the feminists too. They say she is setting a bad example because not all women can get a nursery. Well, not all women are CEOs with that responsibility.

I have no problem with it. CEOs have a lot of responsibility so companies should make arrangements for them to perform at their best. Some CEOs get corporate jets and others trade maternity leave for a nursery.

The feminists are only complaining because she isn't one of them. If she was a feminist it would be "you go girl - get that nursery and a corporate jet"

In terms of looks she's a 6 maybe 6.5, nothing special just kinda average for a woman who makes an effort to stay in shape & look appealing.

I don't get the hate from everyone on here toward her, though i do get the hate feminazis have toward her. The typical female attitude towards challenging situations is "If and when I can't succeed, change the rules so that i can succeed" rather than redouble one's efforts to improve themselves. What Mayer has done is succeed in a man's world playing by the same rules that we have to play by, which totally undermine feminazi narratives about how the corporate world is inherantly sexist & must change to suit all the precious princesses out there.

She's almost 40. Among 40-year-old women she's definitely much more attractive than average.

Obviously much of it is due to her spending money on staying in shape and such while most women of her age let themselves go, but come on, there's no woman of her age that can compete with an average looking 20 year old so that kind of comparisons are completely pointless. We'd need some 20 year old photos of her to see if she was notably attractive in her prime but Googling for those is incredibly ineffective since mainstream media thinks she's "young" at 38.

If someone did manage to dig up some old photos of her, my guess is that she's actually a real nerd girl who's clueless about style and make up on her own (hence all the photoshooting now that she can afford to pay for stylists and make up artists) so we'd see a plain looking young girl without any notable flaws. Even today she looks washed up and plain in a lot of photos the way a lot of pale blonde women look if they don't do at least a bit of make up (being Finnish I've seen a lot of girls turn from gross moon faces into blonde hotties with a few minutes spent on eye make up).

I worked at Yahoo and Google. These kind of people, the kind who got 100 million bucks right out of college, live on a totally different planet. They've never met a poor person, don't care about poor people, would have a colonic spasm if a poor person so much as said hi to them Their idea of charity is to cut the janitorial staff and use use robots instead.

He's a shareholder that wants big dividends once the Alibaba sale goes through (the only reason Yahoo stock is up) but he does make a lot of good points.

Turning around Yahoo was a tough job for anyone. The big debate was should Yahoo be a product company or media company. The board essentially picked Yahoo's path by picking Mayer. We'll never know what would happen if Yahoo went the media company route.

It does look like Tumblr will go down as another poor Yahoo acquisition where Yahoo was trying to buy demographics (mobile, young people) and didn't realize Tumblr wasn't growing anymore.

Anybody read the NYT piece on her?

http://nyti.ms/1Gsyuj4

Some choice bits:

Quote:Quote:

Mayer also had a habit of operating on her own time. Every Monday at 3 p.m. Pacific, she asked her direct reports to gather for a three-hour meeting. Mayer demanded all of her staff across the world join the call, so executives from New York, where it was 6 p.m., and Europe, where it was 11 p.m. or later, would dial in, too. Invariably, Mayer herself would be at least 45 minutes late; some calls were so delayed that Yahoo executives in Europe couldn’t hang up till after 3 a.m. In theory, Mayer kept up with her direct reports through weekly individual meetings. In practice, she often went weeks without seeing them.

Quote:Quote:

At F.Y.I.s, Mayer liked to tell employees that she believed in taking risks and that she was unafraid to admit failure. This philosophy worked well for web products but not for strategic hires. Despite the board’s urging, Mayer opted against vetting Henrique de Castro. As a result, she was unaware that de Castro had a poor reputation among his colleagues in Google’s advertising business.
...
More important, advertising revenue declined in every quarter since he was hired. Within a year, Mayer had personally taken control of Yahoo’s ad team. De Castro would leave the company in January 2014. For about 15 months of work, he would be paid $109 million.

Quote:Quote:

This delinquency eventually became a problem outside Yahoo. At a major advertising event in the South of France, Mayer sat for an interview with Martin Sorrell, the C.E.O. of WPP, one of the world’s largest agencies. In front of a filled auditorium, Sorrell asked Mayer why she did not return his emails. Sheryl Sandberg, he said, always got back to him. Later, Mayer was scheduled for dinner with executives from the ad agency IPG. The 8:30 p.m. meal was inconvenient for the firm’s C.E.O., Michael Roth, but he shuffled his calendar so he could accommodate it. Mayer didn’t show up until 10.

Just shaking my head over this. I remember when Yahoo hired her when she was 6 months pregnant and all I could think was this was a disaster in the making.

Forget 'product' vs. 'media'. Spin/Sell off the core business (or shut it down since it has negative EV by some measures) and turn it into a VC holding company (a la making investments like they did in alibaba). Tumblr was a billion burned, but VC firms strike out on a lot of investments.

In such a scenario, MM should be fired.

I watched an interview with her once, she seemed down-to-earth common sense, not trying to make obnoxious points like Sandberg.

Schedules a weekly meeting at 3AM with her European direct reports, comes 45 minutes late several times. With external business partners, acts like a fucking bitch from Tinder, flaking and ignoring text messages.

That's all I need to know about this bitch. She is a fucking cunt and I wish yahoo goes bankrupt for hiring and keeping her as CEO.

Also, not that I give a fuck, but if some feminist lurker out there thinks i'm just a misogynist for saying this, I would say the same thing about a male CEO who acted that way.

Well technically strip out prior investments made by Yang and board (BABA and Y!Japan) and yahoo core in some measures actually has negative value - just like her.

Sandberg has a lot more respect in the Valley. Mayer left Google as it was well known she wasn't going to rise from her station. Pichai (the Indian guy that now runs all of Google's mature products) started out later than she did there and surpassed her really quickly.

If I'm an activist investor or VC/PE principal and I had to pick between the two and those were my only two choices, I would much rather have Sandberg run my tech firm.

I had somewhat personal experience with Sandberg (around the time she joined Facebook) and she is all smoke and mirrors. Sandberg just plays the game better than Mayer does but is otherwise an empty pant suit. This was a hit piece - someone with friends at the NYT wants Mayer gone.

She is a fucking cunt, Armstrong & Getty had her on for an interview when she was still at google and Joe made a light little joke about google searching for nudies of her and she totally lost her shit on the air.
