So many memories seeing these titles. I havent played games pretty much for the last 10 years (ok a bit of skyrim and dragon age I admit it), but before that...ufff the hours and hours spent playing the Baldurs gate series and Planescape torment. Such dept in games doesnt exist anymore. Planescape torment was the biggest masterpiece in terms of dialogue I must admit, a masterpiece. Ill play that game again when im 70 years old I think.

In no particular order.

Final Fantasy 7, especially after playing it again I really appreciated it. And nearly every other fan and critic has not actually played the game (because otakus liked it because anime and people hated it out of backlash to this fact) so I feel special.

FF4, 5 and 6.

Fallout: New Vegas. Seriously great rpg. Although I am a little bit stuck on this one since F3 was rather shallow but I prefer its style of gameplay to the isometric old games because I never played them as a kid so they irritate me a little.

Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind. Get the Graphical Overhaul, does a lot for the game.

The Legend of Zelda games from A Link to the Past to Wind Waker. All superlative. And the later games are fine, I'm not too disappointed because nothing stays that good forever.

Metroid Prime. If not the whole Prime series than certainly the first one.

And Vanilla WoW to Wrath of the Lich King. I would say Wrath was the beginning of the end but it did have the best raid ever so whatever.
Apparently WoW is reinventing itself but I won't get back in because I want to keep my soul and I am no longer in High School.

I think that is about it. Pretty much encompassing various niches that I enjoy.

I really liked Chrono Trigger

As far as more modern games go, I liked Red Dead Redemption a lot.

My favourite game of all time:

Impossible Mission on the c64.

Ultra-tight, responsive controls that almost seem to happen before you even press them. Randomised layout of rooms. Randomised power ups. Randomised distribution of the puzzle pieces you have to collect. Randomised ways in which those puzzle pieces fit together in the subgame. Randomised robot behaviour in response to your presence, which leads to multiple moments where you think you know what type of robot you're dealing with until you get blasted. Plus you can knock it off in under 25 minutes or so.

All of this meant it was replayable as hell, because there was no guarantee of what was about to happen. Compare that to a modern game and you'll realise how futuristic the design still seems.

The only game of the previous generation I'd consider as making this kind of thrilling design choice was 'Dead Rising', and gamers hated the risks it took, most not even rising to the challenge of exploring the clever time management game within the game.

^ That's what I liked about FTL.

Everything is completely random and though the game only takes about an hour or so to beat, you have to completely restart any time you die. Took me like 20 tries to beat the game on Easy.

A lot of the best games these days are the most simple -- between graphics, story, and gameplay mechanics -- but offer a lot of depth in other areas. Mostly stuff from indie studios.

Depends what kind of games you like.

Action, strategy, simple, deep.

There are just way too many options to recommend one without any idea what you like.

I personally wouldn't play GTA: San Andreas on a phone or tablet though, just way too clunky. But it is a great game.

Dark Souls is up there, as I just finished saying in another thread.

I think it was either Avon Barksdale or The Wastelander that got me to play it. Fantastic game.

It's gotta be either Chrono Trigger, one of the Super Smash Bros. games or Zelda: Ocarina of Time

All of those games have great soundtracks as well. Wiz Khalifa uses some Chrono Trigger tracks on his mixtapes.

Super Smash Brothers 64 was one of the greatest console fighting games I have ever played. As a youth I was simply unbeatable, I could solo destroy an entire team of experienced players by myself with just about every character. That's what happens when your babysitter in middleschool is a nintendo 64.

As far as computer games, Starcraft 1 was probably the best RTS, but I always found Age of Empires II to be more entertaining. It's fun to play as your ancestors and to go through the campaigns, listening to the hammy dialogue and the voice actors. The most fun I have ever had playing videogames was AoEII lan parties. I know that sounds nerdy as hell, but teaming up and cooperating with your buddies to destroy the enemy is mad fun.

Diablo II was definitely my favorite RPG styled game. I never got big into the community, but I did write a fairly popular character guide six years ago that I still get emails about to this day. The dueling system was brilliant, and low level PKing was extremely addictive. Few things were better than clearing a dueling server.

Team Fortress II was the best shooter I have ever played. I sunk at least 1200 hours into it. The spy is one of the most challenging and rewarding classes if played right. Weirdly enough, the same skills that make a decent spy makes for an excellent at every class kind of player.

Oh yes, and the best turn based strategy game I have ever played would be Battle for Wesnoth, which is a free, open source game.

The best turn based fighting game would be Age of Decadence. The game is incredibly unforgiving, extremely hard, and requires at least a dozen playthroughs until you can effectively game the game and make a character that kills his way to the top. The grifter type classes get it way too easy in that game.

I was around 16-17 when that came out, and remember thinking at the time it was harder to see cartoon tits than real ones.

This is probably why I've still never popped a chubb over a video game girl.

The same titles appear in many 'best of PS3/Xbox 360' lists that I've seen (e.g. Last of us; GTA 4 and 5; uncharted 2: batman etc). Metacritic has a useful list

FF7 was great but FFII will always have a special place in my heart

Sometimes I still get the theme music to Boy and his Blob stuck in my head:

my buddies and I used to get high as a kite and spend hours playing Lolo:

and of course:

To this day, listening to the Zelda theme music brings back vivid flashbacks of childhood.

Playing Outland right now, wonder why I've never heard of this game before. Great art and very atmospherics, the story is kept to minimum and told by the gameplay, the shame it wasn't more well known.

This is the all-time greatest for me. It was close between this and Vice City. I prefer the main character in VC and love the setting and atmosphere. But the amount of shit you could do in SA, even after completing the game, was insane.
