Not sure I'd enjoy them as much upon replaying them now, but at the time:

Planescape: Torment
Fallout 2
Mass Effect 1-3 (despite the various story related flaws of the latter two, and the underwhelming gameplay mechanics of the first)

Fallout 4 is looking like a very strong contender so far, even if it's unlikely to match the ones above in terms of story telling.
So does The Witcher 3, but despite putting over 40 hours into it - and then taking a long break as other things distracted me - I've found out that I'm still not much more than a third through the main story line. So still too early to say conclusively.

I'm also a huge racing game fan (it's pretty much like meditation to me) but it's tough to say which one might be my all time favourite. DriveClub is certainly the one I've played most and most frequently in years. I still load it up for a session at least a few times a week, pretty much consistently since I bought my PS4 in the spring.

I grew up on the Zelda series. So I would say Ocarina of Time first and foremost.

Star Wars Battlefront

Metroid Prime

Warcraft III like the gentleman above me.

I'd also say Final Fantasy 7 since it was the first rpg I'd ever played.

Silent Hill 2.

Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament.

FPS or GTFO.

My friends and I would play Quake 3 by bringing our computers together to someones house. Then add in way, way more bots than the map could handle and play intense death matches.

I still feel that was the high point for computer games FPS. Now they all want to be like real life. Real life is boring. I want to be on the moon, shooting rockets and lasers, flying off jump pads. Running around the forest is boring as hell.

I remember this at the arcade too: I could never reach many check points but it hooked me pretty fast.

I enjoy playing sports games like Fifa and the NBA 2k series, as it's a fun way to kick it and compete with your boys when you just feel like chilling at the crib...

But no video game comes anywhere near the GTA series for me.

The freedom to roll around NYC or LA and jack sports cars, assassinate thugs, murder cops, bang hookers etc feels great. No other game (that I know of) lets a guy live out his gangster/scarface fantasy quite like GTA.

I seldom play video games, but when I do, I feel no regrets playing Grand Theft Auto for a few hours and going ape shit...looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Those were the days, even Action Quake 2 was up there. That was proper competitive FPS gaming which required lightning fast reflexes and pinpoint accuracy; there was no time for hesitation.. you had to be on your game or be left behind.

Quake 3 Arena really dominated in that high-intensity, ultra competitive death-match mode. It raised the bar, this looks impossible to players these days.. but this was the upper-tier of competitive FPS gaming back in the day:

^^^^^^^

My point exactly. The death matches that we had with 6-8 real people plus 10+ bots were insane. Sometimes you would die, reappear, immediately die again, then reappear to die instantly again, before getting a few seconds on the next life so that dodging and killing could begin. I loved the gauntlet and "Humiliation!" Good times.

I actually got a bunch of my Chinese students here addicted to the game because they were amazed how exciting it was (this was 4 years ago). After they all practiced for a few months I brought my computer over to their dorm and wiped out a dozen of them myself. You don't lose that shit, like riding a bike.

Blew me away as a younger person when it was released, connected with all the themes, left me empty at the ending and was moved beyond belief, FF6-10 are incredible and I played 6-9 multiple times when younger with myself and friends, soaking as much as I could out of them pre internet , with 10 as the capstone was the best streak in the industry.

One of the few games out there that had something worth learning of. The sheer artistry of it at the time just made all other things seem shallow...I can look at back it now with hardened eyes and there isn't a part of that doesn't ring true, it even better in fact, just as powerful....the complacency of religion (and a good critique of it and its often murky origins), self reinforcing, did machine or man cause this or both. The execution and the way it is conveyed is so good and you get a an incredible picture of a tropical Òkinawa like world caught in a spiral of death and melancholy where everybody is just clinging on for a temporary victory at best, and is good the enemy of great? Is the cause also the solution you are forbade to use? The main character is demure and yet she is strong in ways that matter. The male character is a fish out of water and time trapped in a primitive world stuck for good, more than likely for good, so he has a dilemma over what will his life be worth now and its tied to the story. The music is sensational and it all comes together in a way the series has not done so since. I've often considered it the goodbye game for the original crew behind the series.

The series could never beat this again (and went to shit as Squaresoft got name a change and the series creator left), how could it? I mean some of the voice acting can be a bit haphazard, but for the important things it delivered and with surprising depth and nuance this was 2001/2002, looks great even lifelike today.

So simple and yet full of soul, a funeral blessing after a massacre:

Nothing gets me more hyped than this:

Give me something industry that rocks me at this level beyond gameplay (another philosophical game like this is Planescape Torment and MGS2)

Red Dead Redemption was a game came close to this for themes and depth

Crash Team Racing and Tekken 3/5 and Star Wars Battlefront 2 for pure fun.

Resident Evil 2 and the first Doom.

They're the only two video games I've ever finished.

Also, Civilization III, if it counts, but the AI is not challenging to play against, it seemed like it had to cheat to win.

Oh, and WarCraft, I finished that one also, so much fun, the original one.

It featured a fair bit of Eastern European architecture which made it a little more bearable.

My favourite game ever was Halo 2, I probably haven't played a video game in like 5 years though.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for me, one of the most immersive FPS-RPGs out there.

First four Silent Hill games are also superb, especially 2.

Also Bloodborne, best atmosphere and world I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

Fallout 3 GOTY Edition (comes with all the expansions.) It was also the last videogame I played because I considered 4-6 hours a night on the Xbox a serious problem.

Greatest game I've ever played? Proably Skyrim. I put multiple hundreds of hours into VANILLA Skyrim. Then I got a gaming PC and played it with mods. I had to stop. You can basically live another life in there without having to deal with random idiot people like in WoW.

Lots of honorable mentions though.

Witcher 3 is probably the best RPG adventure game ever made as far as story and technical execution goes. It didn't do anything groundbreaking, but it did the standard genre stuff 10+/10. Also the last game to have good face mocap (seems like the industry is regressing in this regard?). And it's quite redpill: The hero is a badass white man who kills monsters with a silver fucking sword and bangs hot sorceresses (team Yennefer!) and warrior chicks across the land. Hopefully CD Projekt Red doesn't succumb to the feminist wave and ruin Cyberpunk.

Almost any of the flagship GTA games get a mention too, from GTA V all the way to the original GTA III. Spent many hours in those worlds.

Fallout: New Vegas gets a mention just for the setting. It's perfect. Fallout 3 was a little unpolished in my opinion, and the way the enemies were leveled in Fallout 4 just ruined it for me (once you get to level 50+ enemies don't get harder, they just become bullet sponges, I actually capped my level using mods to stop it). If they could update New Vegas with Fallout 4's engine, that would probably be the perfect game.

Red Dead Redemption is the last game I'll mention. Just the best story with the best ending with solid gameplay. The voice actor for the main character is also a real life good man. Also still has the best horse riding physics out of any game out there.

- Banjo Kazooie (the best platform game I've ever played, and it holds up much, much better than anything else from that era — the colouring and texture of the graphics is simply exemplary — and the world feels expansive in an way Mario 64 for example, simply doesn't)
- GoldenEye and Perfect Dark (neither hold up well today visually, partially due to the 'photo-style' of the faces)
- Ocarina of Time
- GTA 5
- Golden Axe 2

That nearly all of the games I listed are British (all but Zelda and GA2) gives me some sense of pride actually. Most don't know that about GTA, but it was always an affectionate satire of how the British developers/writers (mainly Scottish, some English) saw/see America. This is reflected in the over-the-top radio commercials and phone-in-shows you can listen to while driving around.

Honorable shouts to Mortal Kombat 2, Sonic 1 (Master System version for me), Mario 64, and Metal Gear Solid 2. It's only when I reminisce I realise how much of a gamer I was as a kid and early adolescent.

I started early so every new advance in video game seemed ridiculously good.

Super Mario 3
Final fantasy 6
Star fox
Golden eye
Final fantasy 7
Metal gear solid (PS1)
Onimusha 2
Tekken 5
Bioshock

There was a considerable jump from super Nintendo to PS1 and another big noticeable leap again when PS3 games were out. I know ps4 games are better but returns I'm getting now in enjoyment are diminishing despite the better visuals. Like the carousel riding thot of today I feel completely unable to love any new game out there. At best I'll look at the new flavour of the year and tell myself I'll play through it once on the hardest difficulty, maybe.
